Thread: Capcom stock down 11.30%, Monster Hunter World sales cited as being a "risk"

"The lifecycle for games is growing longer, driven by ongoing digital sales; as a result, Resident Evil 4, 5 and 6 have each sold more than 7.5 to 10 million units cumulatively (including catalog and re-release sales). As such, we will work to achieve 10 million cumulative lifetime unit sales for Resident Evil 7 as well." I was responding to that poster since some people just read the headline back a year ago ("Capcom expects 10 million this year for RE7? LUL!"), when in actuality it was just an attention-grabbing headline many didn't read past (like the poster I was responding to), and their actual statement was 10 million lifetime sales after ports, remasters, etc., not 10 million in the fiscal year. They missed their 4 million sales expectation by 0.5 million, but still consider RE7 a success for the record, both due to its critical status and it performance doing pretty good still. The expected units was likely based off of RE6's performance, which had a 6 million goal but only sold 4 million, and likely REmake 2's goal is at 3.5 million due to RE7's performance (which also might explain why their fiscal year goals are so low this year, despite releasing REmake 2 and DMCV this fiscal year, yet only have their sales expectations at 7.1 million despite that including REmake 2, DMCV, MM11, and likely Monster Hunter World PC).

Thread: Capcom stock down 11.30%, Monster Hunter World sales cited as being a "risk"

Yes, I never was arguing this. I was saying that 10 million was never their fiscal goal, the 10 million statement was for lifetime. Not this console generation, like in a decade with future ports/remasters, etc. For some reason some people really misunderstood that statement as Capcom meaning 10 million sales for RE7 in the fiscal year like the poster I was responding to. This said, despite not meeting their goals, Capcom do consider RE7 a success, both as it still performed pretty well (it's still among their best selling games ever, they already made back its development cost before it even released so it's been profitable since release. and did shoot up to their top 5 all best selling games within a year), and its positive critical and fan reception, which will help franchise sales long-term.

For the record, they said 10 million in 10-20 years like how RE5, RE4, and RE6 have surpassed 10 million years later due to ports, remasters, etc. They weren't talking about this year or console generation with that number, but in a decade with other platform ports and the like. They mentioned that due to the PS4/Xbox One remasters of RE4/5/6 reaching those numbers and saying they expect RE7 lifetime will obe day reach that. And they're probably not wrong.

Thread: "Agony" comes out tomorrow, and....

For better or worse I'm open for avant-garde experiences, I've personally always had the inkling this game wasn't ever really main for general consumption, it's reminded me more of an Ice Pick Lodge title for whatever reason (they're the people who made Pathologic, Knock-Knock, The Void is one that for some reason this game slightly reminds me of despite being quite different). I could absolutely end up hating this game, but I'm in to give it a shot. I don't dislike advant-garde experiences even if they're not normally 'fun', for example I like the Drakengard games despite the fact 'fun' is definitely not a word I'd ever choose to describe those games as. My hope, and long-standing hope, is this will be an interesting experience. It could just not add up for me, but for whatever reason this simultaneously matches how I'd expected this to be received by what I know of the title, and now to see whatever I get out of it, good, bad, or more likely somewhere in-between. I feel being a deep fan of horror you're kinda' prepared for some jank and unfun aspects, but hope it excels in other areas. For me one of the strangest purist examples for me is this PS1 horror game known as Chaos Break, which is all at once a fairly unremarkable Resident Evil clone and it is much worse designed than RE, but something about it made me like it despite not really thinking it's good, it had certain rooms, moments, and the like which strangely stuck with me and made me a bit fond of the title, despite me thinking it was a below-standard RE clone. I think if you delve enough into the horror genre you'll find these sorta' rough experiences. I guess I'll see where I land on Agony fairly shortly though.

Thread: Capcom Division 1 has started a "Capcom Confidential" podcast

I thought this was an interesting little move out of the blue. Capcom Division 1 is starting a podcast, starring Pete Fabiano and Matt Walker from Capcom (both are people who have worked for Capcom for years and recently became producers at the company, Matt was a programmer originally while Pete was a voice director originally but did a few roles, and many Resident Evil fans may recognize as he was the model for and did the voice of Pete of the Sewer Gaters in Resident Evil 7). The podcast seems to be focused on sharing the stories from developers within Capcom and to share more exposure on people who make games. If you don't know what Capcom Division 1 is, they're the 1st primary studio at Capcom, they most famously work on the Resident Evil and Devil May Cry games. It's not clear how regular this podcast will be, but they released a small 'teaser' episode and say the first full episode will "hopefully" be ready on June 8th. Guess to see what comes of this, it's very unusual a game developer starts a podcast, especially a Japanese developer (Capcom Division 1 is in Japan even though the two people running this are English speakers). Curious what might come of all of this!

While I think many will, I'm taking it on face value since I legitimately am interested in just hearing developer stories. Game developers often don't get any spotlight behind the scenes, I'm sure there's some very interesting stories to be told in a company like Capcom, where some people have been working there for 20-30 years even.

I get the sense too. I know Pete became a producer recently, and Matt I'm not as certain about, but this Twitter and Podcast surfaced recently after at least Pete's promotion, so I am certain it's Pete and Matt who've made Capcom Division 1 more public and with a face recently. This is where I'm at, I doubt this is the venue where they'll spill company reveals, but probably a lot about people within Capcom. I think there's a lot of interesting potential for this even with just developer stories being shared from people within the company and talks about past projects Capcom worked on.

I knew about the Monster Hunter podcast (though to my understanding it's more similar to those talk shows Japanese do than about the company stories or anything like that itself), but not the Bionic Commando podcast. What was that one about? I get the impression this one is focused more on stories from within Capcom and some development stuff, assume the Bionic Commando one may be similar? I admit I'm happy this one is being done in English unlike the MH one, but I'm all for seeing what comes of this in a week's time I suppose. There's some studios who do podcast, but I'd need to get more into the nitty gritty to give a definitive answer. I will say an English podcast from within a Japanese studio, and one as note-worthy as Capcom, will probably have a lot of interesting material to work through at the very least.

Silent Hill 1 for the PS1 turns 19 today, making the whole franchise turn 19 today. I just kind of want to talk about the series despite it probably being long gone at this point, but what are some of your guy's memories of the Silent Hill series? What's stuck with you all of these years later? Also, character designer Masahiro Ito, who did a lot of the monster designs for Silent Hill 1-3 and most famously the design of Pyramid Head, also did environment work for Silent Hill 1. For the anniversary on Twitter today he shared some of the original 3D work he did for Midwich Elementary School, the creepy first main environment of Silent Hill 1: Cool he shared this and they honestly look pretty good! So ResetEra, let's talk Silent Hill memories!

Thread: RTTP: L4D2 (aka, where the hell is L4D3?)

I know why it occurred, but can I say that the outrage for L4D2 back in the day was one prime example of silly internet outrage? I understand some points, but I think L4D2 did enough to justify being a new game. Also the modding scene for this game was amazing. I can recommend some pretty downloadable custom campaigns for anyone here who might be interested, there's some really good original ones but just for passive mention, there's complete recreations of Silent Hill 1, Resident Evil 1, Resident Evil 2 (A & B scenarios), Resident Evil 3, Resident Evil Outbreak File 1, Golden-Eye, and Crash Bandicoot 1 available in L4D2 which all are pretty fun, and some custom campaigns are pretty amazing to play with friends (only play custom campaigns with other players, some of maps the AI get really confused on). Honestly it might be the newness of it or the framing of it, since you can literally play L4D1 in L4D2, IE turn off new infected/items, play the L4D1 campaigns with L4D1 survivors, etc. That's unfortunate to hear, I'll trust on this since I only play multiplayer games with a certain group of friends rather than randoms online.

Thread: Has Steam innovated enough to maintain it as a 'platform' of choice outside of library?

I will vouch for this as someone who's released several small games, Valve also provides some great features from the developer side, they justify their 30% cut of the profit much more than many other stores do (30% is the average cut for like everything game related). UI is up for debate, but in terms of actual features Valve is long and ahead of its competition. The closest would be GOG, as GOG does have a few things that Steam doesn't, there's obviously of course the appealing to some DRM-free stuff, plus some stuff, like their curated library/focus on older games, and a non-intrusive optional client, appeal to some types of people more. But Steam I think has a lot more going for it, and I think many people who use Steam and other clients really wish other clients had various features that Steam does.

Also, one thing I'll mention is Steam updates its actual features more often than any other game client I know. Within the last month for example Steam finally made it so that developers on Steam can have individual developer pages on Steam, and that users who like a certain developer can follow them and get notified when the developers they follow release new games.

Thread: Amy Hennig talks about the future of singleplayer games and the challenges they face

I was actually thinking of making a topic on this very thing a few days ago. The audience for single-player linear games on average (not just the break-out hits) is about the same as ever, they grow at a slow rate as new people coming into games mainly go into multiplayer titles like Fortnight, PUBG, League, Overwatch, etc. Single-Player grows a lot slower, but the problem is the cost of making these games to an industry standard has escalated in price insanely in the last 10 years. Remedy and a few other studios commented on this previously, making a single-player AAA game now is 2-3x more expensive than it was 10 years ago, and the actual audience and performance for these games haven't increased by a whole lot to make up for the inflated cost of these games, and the actual price these are sold at has remained the same. Then add to this that most people don't actually complete single player games, the number of people who complete these games are sadly low, like most people who see an ending of a single player game are only about 10-20% of the people who play the game usually, and not just bad single-player games, even the really good ones. I think her two suggestions are quite good, making shorter single-player games at a cheaper pricepoint is one thing I think these will head towards, both as players right now aren't finishing single-player games and their bloated cost to make, so focusing on shorter experiences frankly is what will probably occur in the near future as the market has spoken, and this is apparently the direction it wants to move in if you aren't some big open world/multiplayer game. Some individual people may not like this at all, but frankly if the previous size of single-player games are getting too expensive to be able to hold its own, and most people aren't actually finishing these games, all signs point towards shorter experiences. And I do think a game subscription service is on the horizon as well to support these shorter games as well, I think one will happen before the other, but I get the feeling such a service is almost a certainty at this point somewhere in the future. I don't think we're QUITE there yet, some other technologies need to advance for this to be a viable thing, but I am almost certain it'll occur somewhere in the future.

Thread: Resident Evil 2 Remake Gameplay Videos from E3 2018 & Discussion

Mr. X is a Tyrant model (T-102), and one of the most reoccurring enemies in the series. He first appeared in Resident Evil 2, yes. His model also makes a cameo in RE3, and he also appears in Resident Evil Survivor, Resident Evil Umbrella and Darkside Chronicles, Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City, Resident Evil Damnation, Resident Evil Outbreak File 1 & 2, and semi-variations also appear in some of these games as well as Resident Evil: Dead Aim. He's essentially a more 'human' form of the Tyrant from REmake as you played that one, he looks similar to the REmake Tyrant, just dressed-up and his abilities are a bit different. Outside of Zombies, Lickers, and Hunters, he'd probably be the fourth more reoccurring monster in the series, and he was essentially a prototype for Nemesis in RE3, being a reoccuring stalking force in B scenarios in RE2. Since REmake 2 doesn't have A/B scenarios, him appearing isn't much of a spoiler since he'll basically probably be a bigger stalking enemy in REmake 2 in one of/both the campaigns.

Thread: Resident Evil 2 Remake Gameplay Videos from E3 2018 & Discussion

To add to this, RE1 itself was actually scrapped and reworked part-way through development (RE1 started as a SNES game, then came to PS1 as a remake of Sweet Home, then at one point was about ghosts in a virtual world, then became the RE we know today, but there were still scrapped concepts to the final, some of which returned in REmake, others were left behind like the scrapped S.T.A.R.S. members). RE3 was something else originally, but that got scrapped and replaced with what was originally supposed to be a spin-off title (but made more important and expanded when made a mainline title). Revelations 1 had a scrapped version. Revelations 2 was like RE5 where it had a scrapped version, but it was more reworked than it was scrapped. This series has a long history of scrapped versions, partially due to how they evaluate things and have a lot of creative freedom. For the record, REmake 2 was not scrapped, though the team did decide to rework stuff, but this is closer to what they did with RE7's final version. RE7's opening hour was scrapped and redone at one point, in a similar fashion the Raccoon City segments of REmake 2 were scrapped and redone at some point. This isn't a whole scrapping/rework, more a... Normal game development rework. The reason for RE7's and REmake 2's openings redone is a similar reason though they're very different in content, the team thinks the beginning of the game being memorable is important, and in both cases they thought they could do better than what was nearing completion, so redid it to up the quality. If you were ever curious why this series has so many scrapped games/ideas, the reason why is because the smaller team initially working on the project (the smaller team making it as a larger team focuses on the release before this one) has about a year/a year and a half (sometimes more) to work on a game with a lot of creative freedom. Towards the end of that, another project finishes and more people are put on this project, and around that time the big wigs (series producers in this case) take a look at the progress on the game, and decide if it's good enough to continue with, could use some work so to rework it, or to scrap it entirely, previous guy loses directorial position and a new director is selected. Usually a RE game takes 2-3 years to make at its current rate, and usually there's two 'core' RE games in the works (not including remasters and such, which are handled by smaller teams), but it'll take longer if the game is scrapped/reworked. RE7 was majorly redone (the original concept was a third-person game set in a fictional European water city based on Venice which featured RE6-esque combat and a water-based virus, including an increased environmental focus and water-based weapons, and crucial 'choice' moments sorta' like RE3/a TellTale game where time would slow down and you had to make a crucial choice that's affect your path through a level/the story). That got scrapped, and then came the RE7 we know, but that's why there was such a long period of time between RE6 and RE7, well that and some other Capcom mishaps at the time like Deep Down. REmake 2 in comparison is coming so quickly because it was never scrapped, so it's been coming along nicely and will release pretty soon. That's what I meant by the RE8 comment, if the current version goes through we'll probably see it in the next couple years, but if the current RE8 version gets scrapped then we probably won't see it for a few years. It's period of being judged to go forward or be scrapped is probably pretty soon actually as this usually occurs close to the release of the next big game, as REmake 2 work is wrapping up likely more people now working on RE8, and will probably choose if the current version of RE8 is good/should be reworked/scrap and start all over with a new director soon. It's running on the RE Engine, but it's a much updated version of the RE Engine since RE7.

This is going to sound random, but for some reason Undertale came to mind. I think the gameplay is simple enough for a newcomer to grasp, the game has a lot of characters a kid may love, it's family friendly, has some good lessons the game expresses well, it has a good difficulty curve and isn't too hard, has replayability (as a kid when I had few games, I'd replay the hell out of the few I own), and may be an interesting place to start thinking on it.

Thread: How is the Resident Evil 0 HD remaster? Also story timeline questions for RE1.

The magic elevator in Zero will never be not funny to me since it geographically makes no sense. So there's some suspension of disbelief of course of game geography, especially between titles, but Zero's inclusion pushes that disbelief to the limit. Somehow the Water Treatment Plant is under the Labs from RE2, which is under the Warehouse from RE2, which is somehow under the Training Facility from RE0. They obviously opted for making an easy way back to the Training Facility rather than geographical sense, but it's a bit hilarious imagining all of these locations just stacked on-top of each other haphazardly (and nonsensically, as the Water Treatment Plant, the Warehouse, and the Training Facility all have outdoor segments which makes none of this make sense, and to reach the warehouse you need to take a tram from the church to the factory, which then apparently the factory is beneath the training facility?). It's also hilarious at the ending with all of this in mind you take an elevator from the water treatment center to the final boss area, which is undisclosed exactly where that is, but then when you defeat the final boss, Billy and Rebecca escape the Training Facility, which explodes (and apparently doesn't damage any of the facilities it's apparently on-top of, or the setting you fight the final boss in seems like the water facility, and it's perfectly fine in RE2)... ONLY TO REVEAL the RE0 mansion is just a few miles away from the RE1 mansion, and for some reason fucking Rebecca heads there after her RE0 exeprience. The geography and some of RE0's events makes no sense, but I kind of love that they don't.

It's a mode added to the HD Remaster, it replaces Rebecca with a brainwashed Rebecca in a skin suit ala Jill in RE5 and Billy with Albert Wesker. It's just RE0 but Wesker has super moves like the ability to Matrix Run, use heat vision yo make enemies explode, things like that. EDIT: Beaten to it, but yeah.

Thread: How is the Resident Evil 0 HD remaster? Also story timeline questions for RE1.

It's a really, really good remaster, and the art direction and remastered pre-rendered backgrounds look amazing, especially considering it's an early 2000 game. RE0 itself is one of a few 'black sheep' entries in the series, along the likes of Code Veronica, Revelations 1, and RE6. These four games have a pretty even split of fans and people who dislike them. The reason why is because these games do some things very well, but falter in other places. In my opinion, the game succeeds the most in having two very likable protagonist, really nice art direction and some of the best quality pre-rendered backgrounds in any horror game (or games in general) ever, good music, and I personally think has better puzzles than your average RE game. In the middle, some people feel differently on the 'control two characters' partner system and the ability to drop items anywhere on the ground while lacking item boxes. The bad is the game has some boring enemies, while the protagonist are quite good in Zero the actual story is ehhhh, level design has some low middling points, it's not really that scary outside of one enemy type (which I like a lot, but can be frustrating if not sure how to deal with it), and there's several key moments of frustrating forced back-tracking due to the changed item drop system (plus the game sorta' increases the amount of 'filler items' for puzzles to make up for having two inventory systems in RE0). A lot of people say the game falls off a cliff after the train, but I personally always really liked the locations in the game, that's another more split thing I think. I especially liked (only going to mention my favorite location to not spoil too much) the church. Also random mention, REmake HD was made easier on harder difficulties than the original REmake due to a few changes in how enemy headshots work and a few other minor things, meanwhile Zero HD on Hard is harder than the original Zero on harder difficulties due to some other minor changes making the game more challenging. Generally speaking, Code Veronica, RE0, Revelations 1, and RE6 I wouldn't really listen to others opinion on as they're kinda' really split down the middle for a lot of people, with some RE fans loving one or two or all of these games or even includes one of their overall favorites, while others really don't like one or two or all of these games or would rank them lower on their series chart so they comparably seem worse even if better than a lot of copycat RE clone games. They have more flaws than your average RE game that can be identified easily enough, but they all also do some things very well, better than most of the rest of the franchise that will make them strike more with certain audiences. I think it's worthwhile if a fan of the series to play through them and forge your own thoughts, unless you really only have the time/will to only play the best of the best or only like a certain style of RE.

Thread: The initial reaction to Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill 2 on release had some mixed response, some loved it immediately but both from professional critics at the time and quite a few users there was middling response due to several aspects, such as it being too easy, the game lacking the dark scary atmosphere of the first game, the slower drawn out pace, and other things which some felt were downgrades from the first game (such as the thread mentioned, some wanted to see a connected storyline like the RE series had, which SH2 was almost completely separate from SH1's story, which disappointed many people). plus some just thought the story was confusing (complex game stories weren't common back then), I don't think SH2 was what a lot of people were expecting out of a sequel to SH1. I also think it should be noted the time frame it released it, it was releasing after 9/11, right before Halo 1, etc. It was kind of at the wrong place at the wrong time. It also is a pretty good showing for how people shouldn't put too much stock into an initial critical response to a game. Silent Hill 2's reception bettered over time, I think SH2 was a bit ahead of its time so people weren't fully ready for it back in 2001. Also shows how expectations can be one of the worst things for artistic vision, because of people's expectations of what Silent Hill 2 could or should be after SH1 many in that moment didn't like SH2 as it wasn't what they were expecting, so they critiqued it for what it wasn't rather than for what it was. This will be a controversial opinion, but while I love looking at the critical response to things, I think in a lot of ways the consensus immediately upon release is near useless due to several blinding factors, ranging from hype, to expectations, to sometimes the drive to be done by release tampering with the experience, to the mindset someone is in when experiencing a work. Some elements also age well while others age worse, but I think it's understandable why SH2 got mixed reception on release, and what that can tell us about video game critique and consumerism reviews as a whole. They have value for the consumer in the moment, yes, but they aren't necessarily reflective of the actual quality of a game for a number of factors.

Thread: The Most Abused Term in Videogame Criticism (Ludonarrative Dissonance) - SolePorpoise

"It's not perfect." You see that all the time in video game critique, and it's the most empty blanket filler statement that could exist. It literally means nothing, instead of saying that there's much better ways to construct your critique. I've guiltily used it in the past as well, but I think this would be the most over-used phrase in video game critique, and it's terrible since it is an empty-carb hollow 'critique' as perfection doesn't fucking exist and everything has flaws, so of course it's not perfect.

Thread: What do you think is gaming's quintessential perfect storm?

Quintessential? I couldn't quite say. For horror games, I want to say Silent Hill 1 & 2 though. The story of how those two games came to be are extraordinary tales that wouldn't of happened if so many things didn't fall into place. Silent Hill 1 & 2 essentially only came into existence due to a lot of talented people being tied to failed projects, being given a last shot by the company (Konami) who wanted a horror game because of Resident Evil's success and wanted it to appeal to Western audiences, and then all of these occurrences and bumps and commitments from the team through development happening to make the first Silent Hill game occur. There's so many layers to this story, from the now famous story of Takayoshi Sato, the man who did the character designs and CG cutscenes for SH1 & SH2, who famously for SH1 was going to be downplayed for his efforts on SH1 from other Konami animators who just wanted their name attached to the project and didn't actually work on it, so Takayoshi Sato came to Konami with demands, they said for his demands to be filled he'd have to do ALL of the CG cutscenes with absolutely no help obviously trying to bark him down, but the mad man did it by living in Konami's offices for over a year and using multiple computers at Konami to render out the cutscenes and work on them when everyone else was home. That's just one story though of many, when you begin to dig into how SH1 & SH2 came into being, it was in many ways due to so many things falling into place. Most of the team weren't really experienced in horror, which due to their under-exposure brought a new interesting kind of horror, in part due to the director (the now famous Keiichiro Toyama, who also directed and created the Siren and Gravity Rush series), who wasn't big on horror but really liked alien stories and David Lynch, how Akira Yamoaka got involved to do the sound design of SH, and just everything. It also released timely to get the attention it deserved, after the releases of RE1-RE3 when horror retention was high, but people wanted something other than just a RE clone, allowing SH to benefit (plus having a demo tied-in with MGS1 due to the timing of both of their releases to help broaden its exposure). Silent Hill 1's development and demands on the team were frankly stupid power-play from Konami, but in spite of or maybe because of this, Silent Hill came out of it and turned into a masterpiece. And SH2 followed suite in Konami then trying to overtake the project after the success of the original but the team having to make plays to retain their creative freedom and wanting to make something without strong corporate intervention that was trying to meddle there. It's quite a story of how several people were slammed together due to unfair circumstances and made the most of it to make something original and left a mark on the genre, and I'd say even the industry.

Thread: Dino Crisis 1 and 2 are 50% off on US PSN! Here's why you should buy them.

So I'm going to add a few reasons why Dino Crisis 1 & 2 are worth checking out if you're a person who knows very little about them, but happen to know about Resident Evil. Dino Crisis 1 is essentially what it's always described as, a Resident Evil game with dinosaurs. It was made by a lot of the same people who made Resident Evil 1 & REmake, including of course being directed by Shinji Mikami. It plays like a Resident Evil game essentially, but with some key differences. Your standard zombie is replaced with velociraptors, who are not only pretty fast but unlike zombies raptors far more commonly know how to use doors and can follow you through a few rooms before giving up chase. There's a bleeding mechanic in the game (which was actually planned for Resident Evil 1.5 but was ultimately cut) which makes you bleed after taking certain types of damage from attacks, which leads a blood trail that dinosaurs can follow. The game has a lot of stand-out moments, and I think has some of the best 'fun' puzzles I've ever experienced in a horror game. There's a couple puzzles I'm especially fond of, one being a puzzle that has multiple possible solutions but lets you kind of change the layout of this one room to make it easier or harder for yourself, and you can decide which one works best for you (which it's rare to have puzzles directly impact and allow you strategy in the survival gameplay part). I think it's on-par with the quality of the classic Resident Evils, and definitely worth checking out if you're a RE fan. Dino Crisis 2 is an entirely different beast. It's basically the precursor to the Mercenaries Mode in Resident Evil games from RE4 onward... Except in a campaign format. Each time you pass through a room you kill dinosaurs to keep a combo going, and the time taken, combo achieved, enemies killed, etc., effect your score and when you go through the door opening animation to the next room you get scored, a letter rank, and receive points from your performance. Points are used to buy and upgrade weapons, items, abilities, and other things from a shop system you use. Dino Crisis 2 also features a sort of open world design between a few different islands you can visit, taking a submarine to go from island to island (which sometimes randomly triggers a on-rail shooting segment thing where you can get even more points for playing). The game isn't all about the action though, it still has puzzles (and better yet, most puzzles now being implemented into gameplay somehow rather than these separate cut-off obstacles only loosely present in themselves), set-piece moments, big changes in pace (like this one bit where you go to this underwater facility in a diving suit), Metroidvania elements as you unlock access to more parts of these islands, and a great enemy variety with different strategies and a lot of dinosaurs. It's very fun, and when you beat the game you unlock this 'virtual arena' mode with challenges you can do and local multiplayer where you can play as dinosaurs to complete objectives and compete against other dinosaurs. Both games are often underlooked, but quite good.

At that Twin Peaks panel, Lynch actually let a few tidbits out, such as the the bathrobe that Wonder what that means? Probably the biggest thing Lynch said is a comment on the ending. Someone asked if he always planned that to be the ending to season 3 of Twin Peaks, if that's what he was working towards the whole time. Lynch responded simply with, "That's the ending." When asked if he could elaborate, Lynch then said, “This is the ending. It’s right there. You all just saw the ending.” He didn't go any further than that, and didn't clarify if he meant just of the season or the whole series, but he said it very boldly and seemed he wanted to say that more than answer the question, so I do think he and Frost may have decided no more Twin Peaks.

That's what I want to know. So this is recorded, Lynch spends a lot of his time talking on actors but says a few things sprcifically. The two things he brings up specifically without being asked about it is that Jeffries is not a teapot, he crafted the machine himself, but if people see it as a teapot that's okay. And for some reason he brings up the bathrobe really excitedly, and asks the audience who's bathrobe is that, someone eventually says Lucy's, and he responds that they're damn right, and not to forget it. I don't know why he brought it up, why this excited him so much, and it's even stranger it's one of the few things he brought up himself, like he wanted people to remember this.

This is my first time watching the whole thing together, and there's a lot of things towards the end of Season 2 which I never noticed before. Small things like how Mr. C's speech patterns are already present in Cooper in the Season 2 finale, clues about where the purple ocean place is, about the illness in Season 3, etc. Very interesting, some of this stuff I figure may already be well known but being my first "complete series" rewatch with Season 3 included, it's quite a ride.

Thread: I'm playing all the Resident Evils for the first time in release order

I will definitely be following, and for the record the order is a pretty good way to play the series in general. Some asides I will mention, no spoilers but notes I will make if going in fairly blind: -For Resident Evil 1 you don't need to play both Chris and Jill's campaigns. You can if you want to, there are some differences, but playing through one I think is fine as they're mostly similar. -For Resident Evil 2, make sure that you play both Leon and Claire's campaigns. There's some pretty big differences if you play both. -Resident Evil REmake, like RE1 you don't need to play both Chris and Jill's campaigns. You can if you want to, there's some differences and even more differences than the original RE1, but they're still pretty similar. -For Resident Evil 4, once beating the game I will suggest playing the secondary optional campaign known as, "Separate Ways" for the complete experience. It is in the PS2 and all later versions (but not the GameCube original). I don't know what platform you're playing on, but if on PC I will suggest a certain texture mod. Also I suggest dipping your toes into the Mercenaries Mode. -Resident Evil 5 I HIGHLY suggest playing on Veteran difficulty, Veteran Difficulty is basically equivalent to RE4's Normal difficulty. I also HIGHLY suggest finding a co-op partner to play the game with, it'll make the game a lot more enjoyable. Also once you complete the game, definitely play Lost in Nightmares and Desperate Escape, their DLC but included in the Gold Edition, and both are very much worth playing. Also dip your toes into Mercenaries, it's quite a bit of fun. -Resident Evil Revelations 1 if you have time and feel like it, I suggest playing Raid Mode, potentially with an online co-op partner. Raid Mode is an optional mode, but probably the best thing about Revelations 1. It's essentially dungeon crawling RE with some fun twists. -Resident Evil 6 after you do the prologue chapter I suggest you mess around in Mercenaries a bit to get used to the controls before hopping into the main game. I suggest playing Professional in RE6 as it's essentially the equivalent to Veteran difficulty in RE5. ALSO, instead of playing campaign by campaign, I HIGHLY suggest playing the game in this order: Prelude Chapter Chris Chapter 1 Chris Chapter 2 Jake Chapter 1 Jake Chapter 2 Leon Chapter 1 Leon Chapter 2 Leon Chapter 3 Jake Chapter 3 Chris Chapter 3 Jake Chapter 4 Leon Chapter 4 Chris Chapter 4 Jake Chapter 5 Chris Chapter 5 Leon Chapter 5 Ada's Campaign I have some reasoning for all of these placements, it's essentially the 'chronological order' of events in the game but with a few changes for pacing. Ada's campaign was originally unlockable, which is why it's last, but frankly despite a patch later making it available from the start I highly suggest playing it last as it's meant to be played last I feel. This order though will help the pacing of the game I feel, as it varies up the tone and events more. I also suggest like RE5 to play with a co-op partner. Dipping toes into Mercenaries is also fun here, maybe the best part of RE6. -Resident Evil Revelations 2 there's two DLC bonus episodes, they aren't as good as the main game and some hate them but I think they're okay. They have a few story expansion things and moments, so really it's your call if you want to play them or not. Raid Mode in Rev 2 is fun but I don't think as necessary to play as Revelations 1 due to a few things, but it's up to you. -Resident Evil 7 make sure to play the DLC stuff. Not a Hero is free for all so that's easy enough, End of Zoe costs money but is worth playing I think. The Lost Footage DLC has some gems in it, I think the ones you must play as Bedroom and Daughters, but I'd also add on 21, Basement, and Jack's 55th Birthday Mode if you want the full 'experience'. Jack's 55th Birthday Mode in the Banned Footage DLC is essentially this game's Mercenary Mode, and for the other DLC pieces I suggest playing Banned Footage stuff before Not a Hero and End of Zoe, but up to you. -ALSO, this is just my opinion and you don't need to feel like you have to take it, but I'd kind of recommend even though it's a spin-off if you can get it for cheap enough to play . I think it's often underlooked, it takes place between the classic and modern Resident Evils, showing elements of the older RE games and RE4, and has a story with a few connections (not important, but interesting). I think it plays the most like the mainline RE games and provides a good experience if going all the way through. Umbrella and Darkside Chronicles tell important canonical stories, but their gameplay is so different so up to you there. Hope some of this was helpful~

Thread: I'm playing all the Resident Evils for the first time in release order

Essentially that, the mod isn't 100% completed yet but all the environments are done so a good time to use it. Your plan for RE1 and REmake seems good, and RE2 indeed is a good idea to play both campaigns. Both go through the game very differently, have different events, different boss battles, some different areas, etc. For the spin-offs, it's kind of an open game there. Here's some thoughts on them I'll share: -Resident Evil: Dead Aim is the one I'd most suggest playing currently. It's canonical (though not important but a few fun connections), but more-so out of most of the spin-offs it plays the most like a classic Resident Evil game. It also shows a very interesting transition from the classic Resident Evil games to the modern ones, it kind of plays like a classic RE with a more modern RE4-esque set-up. It also is surprisingly atmospheric and has some interesting twists. For placement if you decide to go through it, Dead Aim would've been released before RE4 and around the time of Remake/Zero, but I'd play it after REmake/Zero, but before RE4. -Resident Evil Survivor is the precursor to Dead Aim, it is canon as it's mentioned loosely in Zero's opening, but it's not very important. It's okay, I don't hate it but I don't view it as a must-play either. It's basically a first-person RE, it's not on-rails but has on-rail elements. If you choose to play it, play it before REmake/Zero as it came out after the classics but before REmake/Zero (it was a PS1 game). The game I will mention has multiple branching paths, there's multiple times in the game you get the choice to go to three very different locations, like one choice will lead you either into a hospital, a library, or an arcade, while another split will lead you into a Night Club, a Warehouse, or a Prison. As such the game is worth playing through at least three times... Which the game is SUPER short, a single run is like 40-90 minutes, so it shouldn't be too hard. Game has multiple variations of scenes based on your route as well, and also has a lives system where if you run out of lives you start all over. Up to you if you want to play or not. -Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles and Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles are on-rail shooter versions of the RE games. Both are canon and tell new scenarios to the series lore, they are good but quite different than the other games. Umbrella Chronicles tells an on-rail shooter retelling of Resident Evil Zero and REmake, as well as what is SUPPOSED to be RE3 but honestly it's just some entirely new made-up scenario with some RE3 elements. It also has a new scenario set in Russia of Chris and Jill infiltrating the last Umbrella facility to shut them down for good, and also has chapters you unlock where you play as Wesker during the events of Zero, Remake, RE3, and the new scenario where you can see what he was up to behind the scenes. Umbrella chronicles is more of an Arcade shooter, it's fun but kinda' dumb. Darkside Chronicles has a retelling of RE2 and Code Veronica in it, as well as a new scenario featuring Leon in 2002 in South America, and tells the time he worked with a side character who appears in RE4 later and shows their history together. This game is more a 'cinematic on-rail shooter', it has a MUCH bigger focus on story and drama, as well as more cinematic set-piece moments in gameplay than Umbrella Chronicles. It is bigger budget than UC and quite different, but I liked it quite a bit. If you're up for on-rail shooter spin-offs for RE, one being an arcade game with some new little story bits, and the second being a narrative drama-ridden cinematic on-rail shooter, these I think are worth checking out. -Finally, Resident Evil: Outbreak. If it weren't for the fact it's hard to play multiplayer these days (there's some fan servers, but have to do a lot of elbow grease to get them working and find partners to play with), you can play them single player but will have to deal with three AI companions. THIS SAID, Outbreak is freaking awesome. They play like the classic RE games but with some new touches and interesting scenarios, both Outbreak File 1 and Outbreak File 2 having scenarios in familiar and new locations with familiar and new enemies from the classic entries in the series. It's not quite as good without multiplayer as it was designed with it in mind, but it still is worth checking out for a fan I think. It tells the story of several people trying to survive and escape Raccoon City while RE2/RE3 are happening. The other spin-offs I think should only really be played if you want to go all in, but hopefully this stuff is helpful as well.

Thread: I'm playing all the Resident Evils for the first time in release order

Some really hate Zero. My opinion is more favorable, and the recent HD Remaster has some advantageous to it. Let me say this straight: Zero is nowhere near the quality of REmake, but it is kind of a toss-up of opinion. Some people think more favorably of it, it's among others least favorite entries in the series. So what it does well is the HD Remaster is quite possible the most beautiful looking classic survival-horror game, like just look at some of these shots: I can understand some prefering REmake's art style, but Zero HD looks fantastic, and unlike the HD Remaster of REmake they still had the source files for the environments so the HD Remaster looks amazing. This is singularly the best thing about Zero. It also has some pretty decent music, it's not series best but it's also not worst and is pretty good. Two more popular examples you'll hear earlier in the game for no spoilers: And I will add I personally think it has some of the better puzzles for a Resident Evil game, but that's more objective. Now, some love it/hate it elements that divide more people. The story is a big one, it goes into some more sci-fi territory and has some fuckery with time and place of things, and doesn't make the most of some elements it has and a sorta' boring and out there villain. This said, many who like the story enjoy it most because the two protagonists, Billy and Rebecca, are fairly likable and it's fun to see their scenes together. Another split thing is the actual level design in the game, some like it and some dislike it. Out of the classic RE games it has maybe some of the most boring enemy selection, and I will admit it has some of my least favorite enemies in the series among the cast. There's a couple stand-outs, but it's pretty much a dull selection with a few annoyances. The partner and item drop system some people really despise. To explain, in RE0 you play as both Billy and Rebecca and switch between them through the press of a button. Some situations you're forced to play as one or the other, or can choose one to tackle something or another, but some people don't like the system. What some even dislike far more is the item drop system. This game has NO item boxes like other Resident Evils. Instead you can drop items wherever you want on the ground. This has some advantageous, but the end result is you'll drop an item somewhere and then need to run back to the location you dropped it to get it again. This is combined with the game having more 'multiple items to carry for a puzzle' stuff than usual RE games, so there's a lot of backtracking and item management if you don't plan ahead. There's also at least two times that you go to a place and an item you haven't needed for hours so it's probably not in your inventory are suddenly needed again, so then you have to backtrack and find them again. The items do appear on your map, but it still can be an annoyance. Also frankly it's not that scary outside of one element which is pretty well done, but all the same. I still like it but it is on my lower half of the RE games. Worth playing I think, though.

If Nintendo sites/voices publish the news before the campaign is over, plus the 48 hour boost that'll be coming shortly (when people get notified the campaign is 48 hours from completion), it might be possible, but to be seen. It definitely is a bit of a tight squeeze, but the campaign did manage to make $150,000 in two days, so I won't say it's impossible for it to make $200,000 in the last 53 hours.

I don't think so. They tested it, they can get it working, but ports do take time and money - and when they only have so much money (and time is always finite), they're just laying out the cards that it's possible but being honest of a realistic goal of how much it'd probably cost for man hours to port it to Switch (plus Switch licensing and other factors). They were thinking about it, and were open it wasn't part of the initial Kickstarter funding level goal (were pretty clear it was PC/PS4 that was being funded). Switch is a stretch goal if they get the funding to make it happen, or if it doesn't if they can manage it later or not.

This is up for debate, but I do believe several things in the last week outside of the natural last few days boost helped it. Keep in mind this wasn't just luck, the studio had prepped some surprises in for the last week to gain momentum that worked. A week ago we were barely 50% funded, and there was a greater standstill than usual for a Kickstarter. Getting several large YouTubers and sites to cover it in the last week I honestly believe is what gave it the push it needed. But I'm very happy that Swery and the Panzer Dragoon guy get to make their small town cat game.

I think it's not just the natural cause of things, I think the prototype and some things laid out have been able to help it, I honestly believe if they hadn't done that we'd be far behind where we are right now. The prototype allowed an easy way for several Swery fans with a voice to make a video or coverage to pass along the Kickstarter to others. Every big boost in the last week can be attributed to a certain voice trying to spread it, IE when Jim Sterling made a video there was a boost, and yesterdays boost happened after Mega64 and Super Best Friends both made a video on the Good Life. Exposure is the biggest thing a Kickstarter needs, without eyes and interested people being aware it exists then it won't pass through, and I think Good Life was dangerously close to not making it. I do think they made some wise decisions to save for the back-end of the Kickstarter with the prototype to allow fans to spread it a bit, and the Mega64 videos I think are a collaboration, which was also a smart move. It still runs the risk of not making it, but I think they chose some wise things for the last week outside of the natural bump it would obtain naturally. I don't think the natural 'final days boost' would've helped it where it was originally, but I think the increased exposure of different faucets is helping it out, which isn't just by chance as they've Swery and his studio have been playing a few cards in the last week to help increase exposure.

As someone who REALLY wants this to exist and let Swery (and the Panzer Dragoon guy) do what they want, it's just at the point it's not set entirely in stone yet but it looks like it might very well make it. It still is $80,000 short but due to a few things falling into place it's made leaps and bounds in the last few days. If they can keep that up for the last few days... I think it'll make it honestly, but it's not over until it's done. I really need another Swery small town game in my life, that's all I know.

It was thrown together, I do admit one or two aspects grew on me as I got more into it and the demo's ending bit, but I do think it wasn't the best look, given I also understand this is a very early no-budget prototype for a game that's two years or so out. I've played some Kickstarter demos before, and believe me that's not even close to the worst one. Kickstarter demos are hard to do because you need the money and time to make the game, and a demo to put together, especially for an open ended game like this, is hard as most of the core game mechanics, systems, polish, are not in place yet, so they have to sorta' scrap together some bits to make something work. It's not representative of the final game, but it's not a good showing I would agree. But I think it was wise they did it all the same, as it did manage to allow several people who have an audience to spread the word on the game.

Nothing like that here (which I'm okay with, as the game has some focus on characters I'd rather they be of Swery and his teams vision), but the closest would be for $1,906 USD, which is to put a statue of yourself in the game.

Of course supported, I think it may make it this time with all the factors (and it's already made 10% of it's goal, which is good). It also looks a lot better than last time we saw it.

I don't think anyone knows, but I am curious how Vendetta performed. I hope they keep doing them, I have enjoyed each one well enough and I even think despite issues I have with each of them I've liked each one more than the last. While this does happen and Capcom has definitely done this, in this specific case I honestly believe it's coincidence. The chords are completely different, but their both a general an orchestral rise then fall, but how both do it are different enough I think they just sound a bit similar, and frankly outside of that one bit neither song sound entirely too much like the other. While many people will think of Outbreak's Main Theme, I also just mean the general soundtrack of the game as well. I think Outbreak all together has a pretty great soundtrack. I love a loto f the downtime music in Outbreak, but outside of the main theme these two songs are the music with the most views on YouTube if you search up the game's OST:

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if some related composer was involved, the time frame is definitely right for that to happen and Outbreak had several composers on it. It's interesting to think of how different the series could've gone in RE4 went with the 3.5 version, but you also have to consider that was a do or die time for the franchise. Capcom straight-up said either RE4 would be a success or the series was going to get canned, and while I love the horror genre the genre and series was over saturated by the time RE4 rolled around and was on the backdoor of dying down for a while. The drastic shift RE4 took was the right call I think in the end. --- Also, since I have another post in the chain, here's the next two most viewed different Outbreak songs.

Until Dawn is a horror game, but I wouldn't call it what most people consider 'survival-horror', as the game is narrative focused and is basically like a actually well done horror-themed David Cage-esque game better than David Cage has done. It's a good game, but it's not really what survival-horror fans want gameplay wise, even though it definitely was very pretty and used fixed camera angles for various points. Also Capcom uploaded two 'summary' trailers for Lucas and Zoe for the two upcoming DLCs. Zoe's trailer has a few more seconds of cutscene than we've seen before, but not much:

Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster honestly holds an honor for being the best looking classic-styled survival-horror game, they did have the assets for Zero still unlike REmake and it shows. A big part of that is partially because pre-rendered horror games kind of died after RE0 came out and there's not been a serious effort until I guess Until Dawn in part recently with a bigger budget (even though that's not really a classic survival-horror game). RE0 benefits not just from this though, but honestly the art direction of RE0 is pretty good. There's a lot of issues RE0 has, but I don't think even when it originally was the environmental art direction was ever an issue for anyone. It's not quite as dark and gothic as REmake, and in the end I like REmake's art direction a bit better, but RE0 is no slouch and the touched-up assets still look great to this day.

One thing I think made me not appreciate Revelations 1 as much honestly is I had played Cold Fear a bit before I played Revelations 1. Cold Fear is a Resident Evil rip-off game that combined fixed camera angles with the RE4 behind-the-shoulder camera which takes place on a boat (and then on an oceanic oil rig). I think it has higher highs and lower lows than Revelations 1, but one thing it does exceedingly better than Revelations 1 is realizing its ship/oceanic setting and making a much better atmosphere, plus the monsters are more varied (even if a couple of them can be a bit annoying). Revelations 1 has its unique appeals I like, but I feel weird I think I overall ended up liking Cold Fear more than it.

I'm happy you mentioned Deep Fear, Cold Fear was made by a number of the same people who made Deep Fear but years later, it's in some ways a spiritual successor to it/remake of it (like the main characters literally look exactly the same and a few of the gameplay moments in Deep Fear happen in Cold Fear). There's a weird history here, basically there was a team of a few people who worked on four horror games, Deep Fear > Carrier > Extermination > Cold Fear. These four games are all technically unrelated but they all have stuff in common that carry between them and have some of the same people that worked on all four of them. I need to refresh myself on all the similarities, but I recall there's a moment in Deep Fear towards the end of the game where you plant explosives around and then run as the place floods, which occurs again in Carrier, which then occurs again in Cold Fear. That same mine planting, running from a flooding place scene is in the climax of all three of these games for example. Extermination's kind of the oddball one as it's not set in an oceanic setting like the other three but rather in an antarctic facility, but it has a few similarities with Carrier especially.

I'm happy other RE fans liked Cold Fear, it had some definite flaws and annoyances but I was surprised how much I actually liked it when I played it, it's definitely up there as one of the better Resident Evil clones I've played. It'd be neat, and as a PS2 launch title it has some history, but at this point I doubt it. Before Revelations 1 came out I marathoned oceanic horror games, and that's when I played Deep Fear, Carrier, and Cold Fear, I almost played them back to back and I was noticing a number of similarities between the three of these so I looked it up only to find that a number of the same people worked on them, so I kind of consider them an unofficially trilogy. It's like three attempts with some drastic differences at the same thing, which I find amusing but all three do have differences and are worth playing. I think Cold Fear ended up being the best one though. If you liked Extermination while it's not quite the same (Extermination is kind of like Resident Evil meets Metal Gear, which I can definitely see why that'd appeal to you) I'd recommend Carrier for the Dreamcast if you haven't played it. It's more Resident Evil than Metal Gear, but has some fun diversity in line with what Extermination has in parts. It's been a while since I played it now, but I recall it having some similarities to Extermination specifically in some of the stuff they both do. Though Carrier I also recall being a game of high points and low points, the five things I remember the most about Carrier is: 01.) There's survivors you can save or not in the game, especially the first half. 02.) Though it's an oceanic horror game, the ship's being overrun with plant life and some living water thing which also was in Extermination. 03.) The game tries really hard to be Resident Evil, with characters that parrot some Resident Evil characters (I remember there's a Wesker rip-off for example). 04.) The game has a pretty forced environmental message in its main ending after you fight some Tyrant rip-off who's a mutated character you know like recent RE's. 05.) Once you beat the main game you get a B scenario with a female character that has some drastic differences. Overall I find all four pretty fascinating RE clones, both in how all four are similar but also different, but also they're all at least decent with some charm (Deep Fear I feel is the roughest of them, but has some fun B-charm to it and a pretty great soundtrack). I also think I may make a post after this one on one of the better Resident Evil clones I've played unrelated to these if we're on the subject.

So one of the better Resident Evil clones I've played while we're on that subject: Kabus 22 is up there on my 'Resident Evil clones' chart. It was a Turkish PC Resident Evil clone from 2006/2007 that was apparently made by a 5-people team over the course of three years, and though Resident Evil is the main thing it riffs off of it's not the only source (there's also some stronger Silent Hill and Devil May Cry influence, I'll explain in one bit). In the game you switch between playing three characters, one is a woman who is more puzzle focused, one is the 'main character' who's a Chris Redfield knock-off and plays like a Resident Evil character, and the final is a guy who looks like Leon who plays a bit more like Dante and DMC than anything. Now in fairness, the characters were originally bigger rip-offs than their final versions, here was the original art for them: The final versions look like this: The game has some laughably bad acting and writing, but it's with its charms. Do not play this game for its story, as it's kind of a clusterfuck and frankly the final boss is bad and the ending is literally like 15 seconds long (you can tell it was rushed at the very end), but despite this it's actually a pretty enjoyable Resident Evil clone. I actually wouldn't recommend playing this game on Hard, I did it and I think it's a case of a game that suffers some frustration if you play on Hard and would recommend Normal, but I really enjoyed it still. A number of fun locations you explore, some unique enemies that are somewhere between Resident Evil and Silent Hill, some fun puzzles, decently well handled back-tracking element (the fun kind fortunately). The best summary I could give is this silly video I made after playing it for 5-6 hours. It doesn't include footage of the final location, which I ended up loving since it kind of is like a mixture of a Silent Hill-esque church and a Resident Evil mansion, but it's a decent demonstration of the game I feel even if a sillier video: This game I hope comes to Steam eventually, it was Greenlit forever ago but nothing since then. It's up there on my Resident Evil clones list for some creative mix-ups, good locations/enemies, and with some fun pacing/puzzles.

I hope you enjoy it, I don't want to get your expectations TOO high since the game has some definite annoyances and a few parts I wasn't fond of (at least on Hard difficulty). Three things I remember about the game that frustrated me was the game saves using checkpoints, but the checkpointing is wildly inconsistent where sometimes you'll get like two saves in a 5 minute span and another you won't get a checkpoint for like almost an hours worth of gameplay and I don't think you can manually save was one of the big ones. And I love some of the enemy variety in the game, but there's two I remember gave me a really hard time on Hard difficulty (I play most games on Hard my first blind run through), I kind of don't want to spoil them as they're kind of cool outside of both having one (different) annoying thing, but the one that especially pissed me off was this one enemy that has this one-hit kill attack that appears later in the game and it can trigger you into an unavoidable animation for the kill attack at like, 2-3 meters away (you get a QTE to avoid it, but it's fast and if you fail it you're dead). These annoyances aside though, there was actually a lot I liked about the game, and I think many fans delving into the Resident Evil clones and B-Tier horror games are not expecting flawless games but maybe some rough gems among the batch. I would definitely classify Cold Fear as one of those rough gems, there's a lot to like in it as well, and it's a surprisingly varied experience, with the three elements I recall liking the most being it uses its oceanic setting better than I've seen any other oceanic horror game do (it has a lot of touches that add up to really give a stronger 'ocean horror' vibe than any other ocean horror game I've played about), the atmosphere is surprisingly good in bits and there's a few tense scenes, and the setting has some interesting varied areas with nice touches and unique rooms, so there's not too many areas that look the same or anything. Resident Evil clones are fun though. Deep Fear has a stupidly good soundtrack, shame he didn't do much in games after that. Funnily enough his most recent work was the soundtrack on Resident Evil Vendetta, however. Deep Fear has two many great songs, but here's two I'm going to link: Self-Destruct Theme: 'Invasion', I don't remember when this plays honestly (it's been a while) but I like it: Here's four others I won't directly link to: Main Theme: Emotional Moment: Regular Boss Theme: Final Boss Theme: Unfortunately Deep Fear is never quite as good as its soundtrack, but it does have some enjoyable elements. I think its story has some fun B-charm going for it and though the gameplay can be a bit tedious at times it's god a few charms in it here and there.

For the record, Capcom considers RE7 a success. It has sold over 4 million copies at this point but didn't initially make its sales goal at launch, but one thing I can mention is 4 million was only the 'overly optimistic' sales goal, keep in mind RE6 sales goal was 6 million and it only sold 4 million to reach that goal. RE7 actually got a lot closer to its sales goal and actually made more profit than RE6 did initially. RE7 made back its whole budget before release through pre-orders also, unlike RE6. RE7's budget was higher than some may expect because of them buying a studio and all the stuff for photogrammetry, as well as making the RE Engine, but that was also a long-time investment for other projects and not just for RE7. People also understate that Capcom values critical success for the franchise as well. Resident Evil is their flagship franchise essentially, the quality of the games do actually matter to them and they want Resident Evil to be the 'king' of the horror genre. Resident Evil 7's good reception they view as really good for two reasons, first is that their flagship franchise continues to be recognized as a quality horror game franchise, and also Capcom bets on a really good entry helping the entry after it. IE, sales for the Resident Evil game after a quality success are usually boosted by stronger optimism, and if they can chain several good releases in a row that does good for their brand. They believe that REmake 2 will sell better because of RE7. If you;re concerned about the future of Resident Evil after RE7, don't be is all I'll say. Series is doing more than fine right now, and not just in comparison to Capcom's other IPs.

While fair, sometimes perspective is important. Resident Evil 7 has sold better than any horror game in the last decade unfortunately, its initial sales means it sold better than The Evil Within, Dying Light, Alien: Isolation, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Until Dawn, etc. Two of those have sold more than that at this point (The Evil Within is over 5 million sales currently, and Dying Light is over 7 million sales currently), but we're talking first year sales right now, not the tails (horror games are different than most game genres in that the bulk of their sales are not at release but down the line, more than we see in most genres). Big horror game releases usually sell over 1 million their first three months and in the first year will sell 1.5-2 million, RE7 has done double that and probably will have quite a tail especially in future re-releases starting with the Gold Edition. It's also to mention that RE7 hasn't dropped in price like a rock quite as much as RE6 did. Also frankly the franchise has highs and lows in sales. IE, Resident Evil REmake and Resident Evil 4 initially were way below expectations, even once RE4 released on PS2, but have had long tails and helped the overall perception of the franchise. Resident Evil 5 also saw a huge boost in sales due to RE4 for example, and RE7 they were expecting a bigger sale dive due to the reception of RE6 as well as the new perspective leaving many initially uncertain. While RE7 was a bit more expensive due to its outside cost, those should in the long run both save them money and time on future projects for overall higher graphical and animation fidelity, so it's why they made the investment. Sometimes you have to be reasonable, and there's truth that Resident Evil is one of the franchises that are doing better outside of Japan from Japan. It's not top-tier, but it is doing a lot better than many others. For the record, if they sell over 6 million by March 31st, 2018 then they'll be well on their way to their projected course as that was their original sales plan for this year even before under-performing, and they do have both the RE7 DLCs coming up as well Gold Edition.

Oh, one aside. Dead Aim can be surprisingly scary sometimes. I think part of it is the mixture that Dead Aim is music-less outside of atmospheric ambient sounds most of the time, and the sound design in the game is good with some darkness levels and some absolutely bizarre monsters in some parts of the game. Actually I meant to mention this with my post but I think while I love Resident Evil 2's and 3's soundtracks and wouldn't change them, they don't have the same dark feel as REmake as example and do mostly help to make the games less scary in my opinion (though silence is used especially in RE2 well for a few moments). Dead Aim benefits from having very little music and good sound design despite being a light gun game. Then you have some parts like the B.O.W. disposal plant which just has some bizarre monsters coming at you from the dark. It's not overtly scary, and not quite as scary as I'd place RE7 (which is far behind REmake), but I think it's just as scary as RE2/RE3/RE4, if not more so in some ways (but like thos games, it's more specific scenes I feel).

One side note, I find it kind of hilarious how they market the two upcoming Resident Evil DLCs. Capcom had a reputation in recent years of having these big super spoiler-y blow-out trailers for Resident Evil 5, Resident Evil 6, Revelations, etc. With Resident Evil 7, they wanted to retain more of the mystery so took a much stronger, 'less is more,' approach. Then for the Resident Evil 7 DLCs, the action DLC Not a Hero is getting these spoiler-y trailers, while they're showing next to nothing of End of Zoe to retain the mystery. Just an interesting marketing thing I was kind of chuckling over.

A lot will share that sentiment, but this is set immediately after RE7 ending and it'd be a bit weird if Lucas had other enemies he could pull out of his ass that never appeared in RE7. The bright side at least is there is three new types of Molded that weren't in the original game at least (and do actually function quite differently), and as it's Lucas he also has a collection of other threats in his traps and such.

Thread: Resident Evil Community |OT| Complete Global Reset

To be honest, outside of the occasional moment I've never found the series too scary outside of my first time playing REmake. I think REmake is just head and shoulders over the others in atmosphere and scary concepts. While I know how to deal with them better now, the first time playing mechanical factor and threat of Crimson Heads does add more power to them for me, and it's helped by a general really strong layer of atmosphere through the whole game as an example. The game just has a really strong atmosphere, a darker gothic feel and sense of mystery than the rest of the series (even when you know the answers that feeling still protrudes the atmosphere, like it's some place stuck in time with dust and horrors within), and then a lot of well executed design decisions that do add to the tension and threat. To be honest I think after that Resident Evil 2, 3, & 4 are about equal to me in terms of 'scariness'. There's a few moments in each that startle me or are tense, but I don't really feel 'scared' too often in them. I also don't know if this stance is controversial, but I think RE4 is just as scary as RE2 and RE3. Mechanically it isn't scary most of the time, but it has moments where the scariness flairs up. And if I'll be frank, I think some moments like the dogs outside the church/dog hedge maze, your encounter with Verdungo and holding out with him, and being in the dark room with the armor comes to life as Ashley scared me a bit more than most of the scares in those games my first playthrough. I also realize this needs to sink in for most, but I think RE7 might in my opinion be a bit scarier than most of the franchise, but still far behind REmake. I think there was more moments in RE7 that got me or had me on edge than the other entries. Some of Jack was actually surprisingly scary for me, especially if the difficulty scales him to be right on your tail as you're trying to escape. And I don't think the series put me as on edge as I was for such a long period as I was during the Green House fight and the Attic sections. Of course, scariness is subjective and all of that. Then there's some oddballs, like I honestly don't think Code Veronica ever scared me, and Zero I don't find to be a scary game mostly, but I actually think the Leech Zombies ended up being like the single scary thing in that game, and they were decently effective at being scary.

Not as good as Final Fantasy XIII confirmed. Also confirmed just as good as Umbrella Corps, not as good as Resident Evil 6. So generally you should keep in mind that different reviewers/time periods do matter for reviews, but Famitsu is open with the fact their reviews are often bought off, and in many cases they don't even fully play and sometimes even barely play the games they're reviewing. Badass, if you haven't played The Cat Lady yet, I'll second a recommendation. I think you'll like it. It's a cult classic focused on a twisted story and mood. It's about a woman who commits suicide, but finds out she will not be allowed to die until she finds and kills five "parasites". Parasites wear the skin of man and may seem like anyone else, but beneath their facade they have nothing but malicious intent and will bring great suffering to the people around them if left alive. It's a very good game.

Thread: We need more Fatal Frame

I can see why FF2 is a lot of people's favorite, I think it has the best setting and pacing in the series and something I'll call, "Artistic Horror" elements. Artistic Horror is something to me that is visually interesting with symbolic and dark tones, Fatal Frame 2 uses this to great effect with its titular "Crimson Butterfly", which has some fun multi-layered meaning that's reflective in the game, plus is simply an interesting piece of imagery. FF2 has this in various other elements such as the graveyard with pinwheels, the doll maker's house, the island house with the raining outdoor stairway, etc. I do think FF2 benefits from having less back-tracking/retreading and padding than the later entries and even the first entry, and the sort of open form of the village is memorable. Add to this I do think FF2's antagonist is a bit overall creepier than FF3's and some of the ghost in FF2 are memorable, like the twin with the doll sister or the broken neck ghost. Also frankly Fatal Frame 2 I think is the most 'accessible' entry in the franchise, the ghost are a LOT more fair than FF1 (there were some sort of cheap ghost in the original), and the game is notably also the easiest entry and most forgiving with items (no joke, I finished Fatal Frame 2 my first time playing ever with over 50 herbal medicines). I also don't dislike FF2's story, but I think it's a bit straight-forward. It explores its themes interestingly and I view it as a story that builds to its conclusion, but it doesn't really have much in the way of surprise or anything. Maybe this is just me, but I had guessed exactly where every story element in the game was going within the first 10 minutes of the game, even the fate and being of all the characters in the game, but I view it that surprise wasn't the point, more the exploration of its themes. And I realize this is subjective, but I think FF3 is my favorite for a few reasons. I think FF3 sort of hones in on the theme of the whole franchise the best and with the most impact; the tragedy of death. It brings back the characters from FF1 and FF2 and shows the aftermath of those games, exploring how just surviving a horrific experience doesn't mean it's over for you and how the scars it leaves can still affect you long after. It's very rare for a game to explore how the events of games previous may negatively affect the characters in the future, Resident Evil for example has the characters get stronger and most other franchises tackle returning characters in a more favored light, but FF3 highlights the tragedy of their experiences and the heart of the curse of Fatal Frame is focused on that loss and the effects of traumatic experiences. More than the other entries FF3 captures a depressingly somber tone, getting caught in a period of your life where things come to a standstill. And then of course as most people will remember it feverishly degrades the depressive into creepy as the house deteriorates slowly with the state of our character. Rei is different than most FF protagonist. She's not a teen nor does she come off as fragile as the leads in FF games usually do, but a broken women in her 20s. She isn't as frilly as Miku or Mio, and as we get to see her a lot more outside of the horror context there's a greater understanding of who she is, where she's coming from, and it becomes a more personal experience. Fatal Frame 1 & 2 the depth of the main characters is about saving a loved one, for Miku her brother and Mio her twin sister. Miku has little personality in the original game (to help insert you a bit more into the role), and FF2 Mio is overtly focused on Miyu we don't get much from her character outside of her being the more capable and stronger of the two siblings who watches out for the other. FF3 not only fleshes out Miku a lot more as a character, but Rei despite having had a loved one also loses them, we delve into her hobbies, what she aspired to, what she lost outside of her fiance, her history, and her personality and interaction with others. And Rei is not the only fleshed out thing, FF1 & FF2 focus more on the location hauntings for the majority of the plot. Fatal Frame 3 takes place in a location that's been lost to time, what remains is a memory, a dream version of a location that no longer exists, holding its spirits in a state of limbo. It's a place that reaches out to those being consumed by their depression from loss and pulls them into the dream, but it begins to mark and affect the real world. It corrupts the area around those who are marked with a tattoo for their scars, and the story of why this place exists I think is a lot more interesting than the mansion of FF1 or the lost village of FF2. The citizens of the house are explored and made more human due to the focus on tragedy, the main antagonist has a lot more depth as well than either FF1's or FF2's antagonist (FF1's main villain was a heartbroken maiden who sacrificed herself, FF2's main villain was a crazed sister who was yandere for her sister). And even outside of the house hauntings, FF3's actual haunting location I think manages to be the best. The gameplay in Fatal Frame 3 enhances FF2's system with a few additions and more varied enemy types, but it also differs itself with what character you're playing as. Fatal Frame 3 has you play as Miku and Kei at different points which alter in how they play exactly, with Kei being more defenseless and Miku having some quirks that makes her play more like herself in FF1 (even with changes to the combat to reflect FF1 a bit more). Fatal Frame 3 has a number of great moments to supplement this, ranging from the chapter where you deal with the four singing shrine maidens to the famous crawlspace scene, to the ghost that comes out of film, or what is in my opinion the greatest climax the series has had when you go down to the underground river. Has the best final boss in the franchise as well. Fatal Frame 1 & 2 have you repeating the same puzzles over and over again, while FF3 has more varied and interesting puzzles. FF3 has a number of great hidden and optional scenes you can stumble into, like the room under the stairs that's usually locked which is mysteriously unlocked for one part of the game and what it leads to or what happens when you play as Miku when you don't go after Mafuyu. I think FF3 captures some of the best parts of FF1 and FF2 in the parts where you go to rooms from the previous games but graphically updated, and it highlights how different parts of this dream manor are being added to by the scars of those that came before (and begins to make you realize what certain parts of the house mean with some hidden symbolism, making the environments related to the ghost there). It's unlockable battle game mode is also a big improvement from the previous entries. I should cut off before I turn this more long-winded than it already is, but for me Fatal Frame 3 was where the series peaked. I think FF2 does some things better than FF3, but I adored the hell out of the third entry and have found it more interesting to replay than FF2 at least.

Thread: We need more Fatal Frame

Fatal Frame V and that 3DS spin-off book game weren't that long ago so I don't think the series is dead or anything. Despite FFV not being the best in the franchise, it's still a pretty solid game from what I've played and I've been wondering if they might port it to Switch. To be frank, while I'm not complaining I do legitimately wonder what's keeping this franchise alive. Fatal Frame/Project Zero is bizarre in that the series has never really done well. No Fatal Frame game has sold over 70,000 copies in Japan, and I don't think any of the games have hit 1 million sales worldwide. Despite this, the franchise is nearly 20 years old and has had 6 unique entries, one full on remake (FF2 on Wii), two enhanced ports, and a surprisingly good J-Horror film. And the franchise has done some bizarre things like the fourth entry being Japanese only, the Wii version of Project Zero 2 going to Europe but not US, the fifth entry was digital only on WiiU, etc. The games must be super inexpensive to make or the series creator Makoto Shibata has some real blackmail material somewhere. Speaking of how weird this franchise is, Makoto Shibata has stayed the director the entire series which is highly unusual. I keep on suspecting/worrying this series is going to die at some point, but it just keeps on going. Not that I'm complaining. I'm a bit worried about fatigue of the creators though and some... Questionable things. I know for Fatal Frame V they were thinking of going in some RADICALLY different directions, like one concept was for a sci-fi horror game with a different weapon type than a camera or something, and the series has had what I'll call "Fan Service Creep", it's notable that each entry in the franchise about has had more fanservice than the last. The format of the series also notablly changed between Fatal Frame 1/2 and then onward. Fatal Frame 3 is my favorite entry in the franchise and I quite liked FFIV, so I'm not specifically complaining, but the series started really changing how they work at that point. Fatal Frame 1 is like a 5-8 hour game with some back-tracking, and Fatal Frame 2 stands out as the game with the least back-tracking and most varied locations. Starting with FF3 onward there became a stronger focus on this sort of extended chapter system. Fatal Frame 1 sort of had this with the "Nights" in the game, but they started going for longer games where you kind of stay in the same area for an extended period of time with changes over the course of the game. Fatal Frame 3 onward are all pretty long games for the horror genre (15+ hours each essentially), but with some definite padding out. Despite me mentioning them going in radical different directions as a sort of negative earlier, I do think it might be a good idea for them to sit down and think how to move the franchise forward. There's a sort of pro/con that the franchise is maybe the only still on-going horror franchise that is still is incredibly old-school in a lot of its design, but not all in the ways I think people enjoy. Things have changed some over the franchise's legacy, like the camera went from more 'dynamic fixed' to behind-the-sulder for instance, but playing Fatal Frame V it's almost more surprising how much the series has stayed the same (only a bit less surprising than it's still going with those sales numbers and such). I definitely hope FFV wasn't the last entry, frankly I want more and would love a Switch entry, and I hope America brings it over here too due to how much Nintendo of America seems to want to let this franchise die or thinks we have no interest in it. I do have major questions and concerns about the franchise and it going forward, and frankly when I sit down and think I don't strictly know what direction I think they'll even go with if they are working on it. But I'm definitely interested, and think the series STILL has a lot of untapped potential in just a lot of its core concepts.

Thread: We need more Fatal Frame

Echoing a bit here, while I love Fatal Frame 2 I think the series didn't "go downhill" there. Fatal Frame 3 is my personal favorite entry in the franchise, I think while it's got some padding it managed to work with some great "Home slowly becoming haunted" horror with its sort of hubworld, the three different characters and their unique gameplay hooks were fun, the remixed versions of FF1 and FF2 locations in FF3 were fun and had a fun story explanation, and I think Fatal Frame 3 has both the best story in the franchise and manages to be the scariest entry by a pretty large margin. Fatal Frame 4 has some issues, but it has some great art direction, the story is pretty unique (probably helped it was partially written and partially conceived by Suda51) and played with some interesting and different ideas for the franchise. I think FF4 could've been better if they padded it out less, but it really has some amazing scenes sprinkled throughout. I think a lot of people haven't played FF3 though, which is a shame. I see so many people mention FF1/FF2 were incredible, and then jump to FF5 or something. One day FF3 will be appreciated, one day...

That's my view. We live in a world where all life needs to eat other living things to survive. Literally billions of life forms die every day. It's natural, something alive eats something else alive to survive. I know it's good to be considerate to other life, especially as we're top of the food chain, intelligent, and have a responsibility to give back and be compassionate to other life on Earth. But death and eating other life is part of our ecosystem, no need to demonize a very natural thing.

As mentioned, I'm pretty sure the Japanese text is a layover from Resident Evil 3.5, considering that literally had doll enemies on shelves that came to life. In information since then those enemies were even literally called "Marionettes", so I think why it's there in the final was they decided just to carry it over even if it doesn't have much meaning in the final game. The Marionettes obviously in that version weren't alive, RE3.5 had some twist where the supernatural stuff we were seeing were actually going to have some explanations behind them, but it may have been a thematic version clue in to a very literal element in RE4's earlier build.

I hate to kill hype here, but this is in no way owners data. I checked a few of the small games I have released, and in terms of owners data, the players (experimental) is waaaay off for owner number. All three I checked were way underballing the owner count, I think it's checking for player numbers somehow, but even that is off (but closer), and which isn't owner number. The closest one of my games was 1/3rd off from the sales number for me (it was around 2/3rds right for owner number and several hundred off for total player number), but the worst one was a free game I have titled Close Your Eyes. That game is on over 200,000 people's Steam accounts, players (experimental) guessed 74,000. That's over 2/3rds off, and player number was higher than that too by almost 20,000 also. I don't think this is going to show sales numbers or anything like that.

Thread: Super Best Friends |OT| The Space Traitor ERA

I'm happy they're liking it, but honestly I was kind of thinking they might. TEW2 was a very different fame to the original, and some people who really liked TEW1 really don't like TEW2, and some people who really did not like TEW1 really don't like TEW2. There's some sadness here as I know a few people who were really excited for TEW2 as they loved the first game be disappointed in what the sequel is, but the flip side is I've seen a lot of people who didn't like the first game or even hated it giving the sequel a chance and being surprised how much they like it. Then there's people who like both but one or another more or less for personal reasons, or people like me where I honestly think TEW2 is a rare sequel where I think it's about just as good as the original game and like it as much from my current gauging, but for very different reasons. Seeing how I felt and the response, and having watched SBF on and off over the years and especially for horror games, I had a sneaking suspicion what TEW2 does would be far more up Pat's alley than the original game at least, I will admit Matt was more of a wildcard for me. I also think part of it is you can tell in the first few parts both of them went into this somewhat cynically, but have been surprised by it multiple times. Sometimes the most praise-worthy type of good is the sort where you're expecting to be disappointed but it slowly wins you over more and more. No expectations or even negative expectations, but with the stuff they personally really disliked about the original game being mostly absent and a lot of stuff up their alley within the game itself, the good stuff really begins to shine which leads to them complimenting it a lot as they were hard on the first game and are surprised by the sequel to the point they want to talk and vocalize how much this is catching them off-guard in finding legitimate enjoyment and even various small things they appreciate in it.

I make games on it (and some other engines), so yes. It is beginner friendly, but can do some interesting things if you know JavaScript or are just creative. Now these weren't made in MV as they're older, but here's some RPG Maker games (of the horror variety, but aren't that scary) I'd recommend if never played much from RPG Maker (all three I list are free): These three games are great starting points in my opinion for seeing what the engine can do, but there's more visually impressive games made with RPG maker too. Like here's a small game made in MV I'm working on right now: How I think it's best to think of it is a tool is a tool, every tool has its pros and weaknesses. RPG Maker has limitations in exchange for it's simplicity, but it's a great engine for artist/writers, or someone who wants to make a game in the styles RPG Maker specializes in. Can get more complex with coding in MV, but due to the limitations of mechanics in RPG Maker, you can overcome them with creativity and ingenuity. Some have a stigma towards the engine, but there's also enthusiast for the engine. Just determine if it's an engine that can create the sorta' experiences you want to make or if time would be better spent working on studying something else. One big bright side of RPG Maker is if you want to make projects it specializes in, it can cut down on dev time a LOT when you get the hang of it and deliver pretty polished projects.

I lack the talent of many, but working on this crazy idea to release 13 things in 18 months. I released the first thing in February, released the second this in March, and right now working on my April project: Feast Your Eyes: Little Marshmallow It's a little 2.5D horror game (though with some 3D elements and parts using fixed camera angles) using a simple little style mixing some original assets (which I am limited in) with some royalty free stuff, and it's been very fun to work on. Soundtrack is 90% original and done with that, have done most of the modelling I need to do, there's more that needs to be done but I'll try to post my progress here more. I always want to be part of the indie dev threads, but I am so limited in some ways and feel I should get better in certain areas before I post, but I know I need to overcome this. I've released several well received games, just should embrace my limitations in person like I do in games already.

Valve was asking I provide a tracklist for my 1 month project (as I was releasing the OST as a $1 DLC thing), I didn't want to for spoilers but they require it, so uploaded a preview. This was a quickly done soundtrack for the shorter OST time, but I decided to share it here since I don't think I share my developments much here, though these are just quick previews of a few tracks:

Making progress on one of my rough projects, trying to make the game in about 4 weeks time, I'm not a great artist but trying to do a lot of music, asset, etc. creation and going for a simple crude style. Some early progress (only been working on the project for about 3-4 days now, made a lot of music and sound effects, basework down, now doing asset creation and should soon start trying to make more maps). Wish me luck, I am limited as a dev but one of my vows going over to ResetEra was I'd tried to post more here with my rough niche small games I work on and release. I've backed it, and will probably make a ResetEra thread on it soon if one doesn't exist. I hope it makes it, try your best to get the word out there and be shameless.

Thread: Indie Game Development |OT 2018| Come, help, learn, show and tell!

Self imposed, I'm busy during December (my sisters birthday is on December 6th, Resident Evil 7's DLC release on December 12th, and then from the 15th until early January I'm going to be away visiting family for the Holidays, I wanted to release one more thing before the year is up because I've released two other things earlier this year and other projects in partial development I decided to push aside to focus). It's not the LSD thing unfortunately, I worked on that all last week and I realized when working for my self-imposed objective, "Oh shit, I'm wanting to expand the concept, there's no way I could get this done in just a month for what it's becoming," so I halted it to resume next year when I'm back from holidays and go for the smallest project idea I wanted to do, and thus spawned this thing now just a few days in. I usually do smaller projects, and this rough experimental thing I'm making quickly I'll probably sell for $0.99 and hope people like it. AND TRUST ME, I know not wanting to be shameless. I both don't like to talk about it often as I feel I'm pitching something (when I don't think my work is that impressive, BUT I'm trying to gain more confidence, I've released several things on Steam already and they all have Very Positive reviews and I'm slowly gaining more fans who follow my work, so despite not being lookers or anything CONFIDENCE), but one other thing I wanted to do with ResetEra was help the indie horror scene and I love your Dungeon Nightmare games and want to see this succeed personally. I might up my current backing once I see how holiday shopping has gone and my additional funds next month. I'll tag you in the topic when I make it, probably be sometime tomorrow. NOW, one unfortunate thing I've heard from others on Kickstarter is it's a good idea to get people on-board before hand. Try to reach out to the Dungeon Nightmares fans, as a fan I can clearly see the similar appeal in what you've shown and as a horror fan it interests me. MY SUGGESTION, do reach out to general sites but maybe it'd be worthwhile to reach out personally to horror communities? You have a good looking game for a horror fan and you have a bit of a name to work off of, I suggest you bank on it some. It's not a bother for people, some may dismiss it but many more may be interested. I'll pass it around tomorrow my own little horror circles since I do want to see it succeed and the goal is a bit ambitious (even if realistic for the quality aiming for). Maybe the best thing to do is locate and talk to horror circles, horror fans, etc., directly. Like I want to help you out and I can spread it to a few people and see if they'll share t, that kind of effect. I think Kickstarter often can work best by being direct and talking with people personally, it raises the personal investment and awareness and helps promote a community feeling. Like right now as I know you and like your work I want to help you succeed, I understand you need funding and I like what you're selling, so if you can find more people like me and it begins to spread it might stand a chance, though I doubt it'll be easy with the goal and the rough start but it's not impossible either I think. Sites have so much to shuffle through that trying to sit people down and sell it to them more personally and work to make that spread I think may do some good, and you may be able to track down and reach out to people who played the Dungeon Nightmare games (big and small). Also for the record I backed it earlier since I was doing horror research earlier today, I checked a horror reddit and the Rely on Horror article was a recent post there and I backed it when I learned about it immediately. But I found out about it before this topic through spread, from Rely on Horror to the Horror Gaming Reddit, if I didn't visit this thread that would've been my only exposure to it, so try to find ways to spread it to people who have played your games since there could've been a real chance I might've completely missed this DESPITE loving the games and would love to support it if I only knew about it.

I think there's less than some people would want but more than some people think there is. At the moment we know of the following features for the versions: -They will be HD on PS4 & Xbox One. -They will have PC Graphic Options on PC. -The game features a new interface/UI. -A new more modern control scheme is an option. -There's some kind of 'time-travel' system which is not detailed yet what they mean, but could potentially aid one big issue in Shenmue 1 especially. That's all that's confirmed for now, there might be more done as well, but there is evidence they are doing more than just straight porting at least.

Thread: Shenmue I & II Remaster (2018; PC/PS4/XB1 - $29.99)

That's one way to do a remaster, but not the only way. This game for the record is including most of the things you just mentioned, it's already confirmed to have HD resolutions (and resolution options on PC), and various PC graphic option enhancements and improvements. It's also including new visual elements. control scheme, first version of Shenmue 1 to include both dub languages in one version, etc. For the record, Shadow of the Colossus was a remake, not a remaster (ICO/Shadows of the Colossus game on the PS3 was a remaster, the recent SotC for PS4 was a remake though). For the record, graphical fiddelity has nothing to actually do with either of these things. For example, this is a remake: It looks just like the original game (though better resolution options), but it was remade from the ground up, from the physics to the levels. SEGA didn't advertise it as such since the purpose of the remake was to capture the feel of the original, just with new features and fidelity. Likewise, some examples you said are indeed remasters. Remake simply means remade from the ground-up, and a remaster simply means a remaster or touch-up of a previous work. They've been used as buzz words so a lot are confused of the exact meaning or what that means for the type of game, but the specifics of eithers can happen. Also look into what a remake and remaster in cinema history means for more examples, games are different as a medium but the terminology still holds the same meaning between the two. Some Remasters will do big overhauls in their touch-ups, others will stick closer. But this is an HD Remaster, both as it now makes Shenmue support HD Remasters, but graphically it's sticking pretty close to the originals, just receiving some new gameplay ease of uses and features. Plus frankly Shenmue is a game that's from the Dreamcast era, if they were to try to improve the visuals they'd need to do it for nearly the whole game to not clash with the visual look of Shenmue, which is a huge effort and probably more budget than they want to put into this.

You can decide if it's for you or not, keep in mind these games are almost 20 years old so there's various things they did very uniquely back when they first released which are no longer unique for. The easiest way to explain Shenmue to someone who has never played it... Essentially it's one of the earlier open world games to be made, and does some unique things for an open world game. Famously all of the civilians in the towns have personality and their own routines and dynamic AI elements, back when it was released it was one of the most 'life-like' worlds ever brought to gaming and they put in a lot of detail and things to do in the open world. Add to this it has a pretty fun combat system (like a fighter (specifically SEGA's own Virtua fighter) mixed with RPG elements), the game sorta' stars martial arts combat that was pretty in-depth and fun, all to a story that gripped a lot of people and was way above a lot that was available at the time, but a very Japanese kinda' tale of a man who's out to avenge his father and deal with an underground ring who may be dealing with something mystical among the very realistic landscape. So essentially blend a detailed open world for the day set in 80s Japan with fun martial arts combat and a pretty good dramatic and very Japanese story with good and memorable side characters, with some good tinges of humor and drama, with a lot of pretty good 'story missions'', side-quest, and just things to mess around and do in town, and that'd probably be the easiest way to explain Shenmue. Also the music is pretty good:

By today's standards? No, they're not that big at all. For back then? Yeah. Essentially you spend the whole game in a small Japanese village and what surrounds the village. The first game is actually a very faithful recreation of a real world Japanese village for example. But they have a lot of things to do in them if you're worried about big open spaces with not much in there. This said, it definitely does have some open design. This is essentially the entire map of Shenmue 1: And this is the entire map of Shenmue 2: Someone went to the effort to breakdown the maps of each if you want to see here: They have some smaller scale area maps too:

This is an HD Remaster. I think what you mean is a remake. I've noticed a lot of people here on ResetEra seem to have HD Remaster and Remakes confused with each other these days, you're not nearly the first person I've seen say this, and I don't just mean people in this thread either. Some remasters will enhance the graphical visuals a bit, but in order to do that to a Dreamcast game they'd basically need to recreate all the 3D graphics for the game, which if they were to do that it'd essentially be the effort they'd want to put into a remake. But I don't think SEGA thinks a remake of shenmue will do super well in the market, and to be fair they're probably right.

Frankly this delay issue is 100% on the console makers rather than the developers. It's annoying, but it honestly isn't really the developers fault in this case. There's a reason stuff like this happens often for Kickstarters, consoles have some backwards hoops to hop through compared to PC when it comes to distributing digital game codes.

There was some back and forth on it, but ultimately decided to move it as it is a community thing, and it might be best to give games people care to an individual topic about them rather than the whole set. However, I can see the reasoning and if others want to contest I am all ears and will convey to the admins. There's certainly arguments to be had both why it should be on Gaming or Hangouts. Of course, Hangouts is fairly active on its own with communities and isn't just there to pile out topics, but to separate committed communities and enthusiasts from the fast paced gaming news and discussion on gaming side.

Both episodes were really good, and as I commented last episode batch on the app that so far I think Season 5 has been really good, I honestly believe Season 5 may end up being the best season of the show if this keeps up (which is good, since while Season 4 had some great episodes and I still liked it, I do think Season 4 was much weaker than Seasons 2 & 3). The Lapis episode I think did good with some emotional depth (which hits close here since I have a really close friend who had to really struggle in the past with her own scars, anxiety, and running away issues), and Pearl's episode both deals with Pearl as a character and of course a really big lore drop.

I liked the episodes and was expecting others to dislike them, but happy the overall opinion of them is more positive than I anticipated. So last Season the biggest flaw was the townie episodes were just dull and kind of stagnant, some really good episodes happened last season but it felt like most of the rest of the season went back to Season 1 Steven Universe with the townie episodes. This Season has finally, FINALLY fixed my issue with Season 4's problem with townie episodes. The actual writing feels like it's been stepped up for one so that helps, but the townie episodes now feel connected to a larger world, each other, connected to the Gems, and have fun dynamics and developments to their own little plethora of plotlines while telling entertaining enough stories. Previously townie episodes felt a lot more disconnected, there might be one or two connections but many felt rather self-contained. This season has made it so there's not only on-going plots with most of the supporting cast that's getting developed, but these plots are interconnecting nicely (as they should in a small town like Beach City), the characters aren't stuck simply being in episodes themed around the character but feel more part of a living, breathing world, and to top it off they're even starting to blend the line more between the humans and the gems. While there were 'slow' episodes a lot of little interesting things happened, and I found them entertaining to watch. There also was small seeds planted which I suspect may have some pay-off later, but overall I hope the townie episodes continue more in this style. It's frankly leagues better than the Season 1/Season 4 styled Townie episodes.

Garnet's Universe and Say Uncle can be said to be filler, but that's dependent on viewpoint. One is just a fun episode of Steven coming up with a story to Garnet, though one thing to note is it demonstrates one trait of Garnet that the show has done a few times. Garnet is the character who listens to Steven directly the most and both Steven and Garnet have shared stories with each other once in a while through the series, and this episode can be seen as establishing that in part. Say Uncle is a non-canon crossover episode with Uncle Grandpa they did for fun as the team of both had friends in both. Future Boy Zoltron introduces Frowny as a character and his dynamic with Mr. Smiley, which could come into play in the future. Rocknaldo establishes that Ronaldo has a founded admiration for the Crystal Gems, which played at least into a gag in the recent episodes when Steven doesn't respond he breaks into their Beach House to make sure they're okay. It establishes Ronaldo's deeper interest in the Crystal Gems which may play a role in the future. Onion Gang also introduces a cast of characters who come to visit Onion in the Summer, who will probably come back again and play a role in the future. Now how important these individually are and how much people care about them is another thing, but I think one thing you have to accept is Steven Universe is in part 'Slice of Life', the team consider and show consistently that the daily lives of the characters are part of the show's focus. Some people view this aspect as pure filler, but they do feed into each other and is part of the overall show, even if there's some stronger and weaker interpretations than others. And sometimes an episode airs and it doesn't play a role again until MUCH later down the line.

Agree with others Season 5 is really shaping up, Between the wanted arc and this 'arc', it's honestly been an amazing season so far. It's a slight self-joke because Beach City -obviously- has more people in it which aren't part of the people we follow in Beach City, but there's only about a couple dozen Beach City citizens that are 'characters' in the show (Steven, Greg, Lars, Sadie, Lars' parents, Jenny, Kiki, Kofi, Nanefua, Mr. Fryman, Peedee, Ronaldo, Harold Smiley, Onion, Sour Cream, Yellowtail, Vidalia, Dewey, Buck, Barbara, Jamie, essentially are the main 'Beach City' residents.)

People have been fearing that Steven Universe is going to end for a while, but really I don't think you have to worry about that. For examples, we only saw the 'Lars death' scene earlier this year, but people saw the storyboard for that scene leaked (out of context) two years ago. They have a slew of episodes already done and CN's scheduling is just spacing them out, IE I'm pretty sure all of Season 5 is already done. There's been no word by CN the show is over and the people who work on SU are still working on the show, probably on S6. More so, S5 is still setting up stuff and doesn't seem to be trying to bring things to a close. If you also look at every other CN cancellation, they usually make the announcement the show is ending way in advance of it actually happening. We're already nearly half-way through Season 5 and there's been no such announcement. I think there's more evidence there's at least going to be a Season 6 than there is evidence the show is coming to an end with Season 5.

I actually liked these a lot, it's been a while since any new Steven Universe so it took a bit to get back into the world for me, but it only took a couple episodes and I was remembering why I like this show a lot again. Without saying too much in the world of spoilers, I think these might be the best 'town people' episodes in my opinion. There's actually a lot of growth and developments in the town people's lives rather than just keeping the status quo, the plotlines are interesting and tie into the main narrative, and have more human and enjoyable stories. It raised my opinion on several of the characters in Beach City and I'm interested to see where certain changes go. Now in the realm of spoilers, Also, about Sadie Killer in particular:

RE8 is already in development (and has been in development for around a year and a half now) and there's a couple other RE games in development right now outside of REmake 2 & RE8, so we're not getting a string of remakes in a row and rapid succession or anything. It'll more likely turn out we'll get REmake 2 now, then a few other RE things in the years that follow (I'm placing my bets we'll see see RE8 in 2020 and maybe some other RE thing in 2019), and we won't see REmake 3 until 2021+ or something. Like, I'm talking about hoping for a Code Veronica remake, but honestly if that were to happen we'd not see it until at least 2024 or something. The current rate of making a RE game is around three years as it stands. Though varying factors in this, such as the actual time will take longer if for example, a version of the game is scrapped in the middle of production. The reason there was kinda' a new RE game lull after RE6 was due to several factors, one of them being that there was a scrapped third-person RE7 concept before the RE7 was know, Revelations 2 was something else before it was scrapped then redone, etc., so RE7 as we know it only took around three years to make for example, but in actuality it took around 4-5 years since a year and a half of that was dedicated to a very different RE7 that was scrapped in development. REmake 2 was never scrapped in development, so that's part of why it's been able to come out so quickly. Likewise, if the current RE8 gets scrapped (which it'll be up for review pretty soon as REmake 2 is coming to a close development wise), if it does get scrapped we probably won't see RE8 until at least 2021, while if it keeps its current iteration we'll probably see it in 2019. Not including spin-offs (I think most people at this point realize REmake 2 is being treated as a mainline title, not a spin-off), typically as soon as one RE game is finished being worked on another is almost immediately started, there's almost always two RE games in production at one time, just one with a larger team, one with a smaller team. Once REmake 2 is done, most of the team will move onto the next project, conjoining with the smaller team (in this case, RE8), while a smaller team will be made to start work on the project after this (in this case, most likely REmake 3 if REmake 2 does well). There also may be smaller teams working on spin-offs/ports/remasters in the background of all of this too. But as a result, Capcom isn't just focused on making RE remakes right now, if REmake 2 does well we'll see REmake 3, and I think a lot of people want that to happen, but it's not like Capcom is going to stop making new RE games, and though it's fun to talk about these remakes, the truth is they're still years out and we won't even see a REmake 3 for example until at least three years from now or so most likely (I kinda' don't see a scenario of REmake 2 bombing, and think it'll do very well, so I'm fairly certain REmake 3 is going to happen at this point).

Code Veronica I desperately want a remake of personally, I've thought for a while CV needs a remake more than any other entry in the franchise (for my personal taste). I love the settings of CV (I love Rockfort Island and the Arctic Base as settings), I love the villains, I love the music, but I think the 3D of Code Veronica has not aged well and undermines the more 'artistic' locations with some bland realization of the art direction in many cases, and the actual gameplay is filled with so many little frustrations that really add up for me until it began negatively impacting my experience with the game/ Plus frankly I think Code Veronica misses out on a lot of opportunities to do cool things with its design. I feel Code Veronica could be made an AMAZING game in a remake, plus there's a lot of aspects that can easily be built upon and expanded on (from things like the Paris Facility at the start having a playable segment before Rockfort, to the monsters of CV being able to adapt well to a RE4-esque camera better than they did Fixed Angles I think, some scenes like the Chris vs Wesker fights could become gameplay segments, and there's a LOT of scrapped content from Code Veronica which we have concept art for and ideas expanded already in Darkside Chronicles (such as Alfred making a trap obstacle course to overcome in his madness, or the extended fight against Mutated Steve), that I think there's a lot of content to work with), plus with a better realized artistic direction, horror element, and building on the enjoyable semi-over-the-topness of Code Veronica and the horror aspect could make a highly memorable experience. I'm REALLY hoping Code Veronica remake happens eventually, though if REmake 2 does well it'll be REmake 3 next. I'm very happy REmake 2 is happening, and that REmake 2 almost certainly will happen, but hoping Code Veronica doesn't get forgotten here just because it's not a numbered title.

RE4 REmake RE7 Revelations 2 Haunting Ground DC2 RE3 RE5 DC1 RE2 RE0 Dead Aim RE6 RE1 Revelations 1 Code Veronica Survivor However, I even think Survivor is okay. I still need to play Gun Survivor 2 and the Outbreak games. I decided for fun to include Dino Crisis 1 & 2 and Haunting Ground as marginally related. I have played Umbrella and Darkside Chronicles, and enjoyed them both, but not quite sure where'd I'd place them. I have played Gaiden and ORC (and its DLC), they'd be at the bottom. RE7 not selling great is a misconception, for the record RE7 sold over 5 million copies in a year. It didn't sell AS well as Capcom's top selling game of all time, sure. But it is in Capcom's top 5 selling games of all time. And it reached Capcom's top 5 best selling of all time in a year. People really like to downplay its performance for some reason. It did incredibly well for a game that both was a new style and experimentation for the series, and was releasing (this is a point) after the critically panned RE6 and at a time people were both down on RE7 before release and didn't have much faith in the brand name. There are indeed many fans who skipped out on it due to first-person, but RE7 also in turn found a lot of new audience and returning fans who had left after RE5 left the horror direction. In terms of single releases (not platform releases afterward), it is the third best selling RE game of all time (just behind RE5 and RE6). For a single-player first-person horror game to pull those numbers, especially when it was a new direction at a time when fans faith in the series was low, is insane.

I don't want you to get too hyped in case you don't like it, in RE communities I've seen Revelations 2 really loved by some and really not loved by others. Keep in mind it shows it's a mid-budget title, so don't go in with heft expectations as it's a bit janky in parts. THIS SAID, Revelations 2 is in my personal top 5 Resident Evil games as well, I didn't really like it at first, but it started growing on me half-way through Episode 1. Each episode gets better and better if you asked me, and I think there's four things Revelations 2 does very well despite its low budget: 01. The characters are actually interesting. Moira takes a bit to grow on you, but Barry and Natalia are very likable, and Claire's pretty good too. There is some character drama in Revelations 2, but it's actually good (unlike Revelations 1, imo). The story is tied in well with the series if you're a lore geek, the episodes end with actually interesting cliffhangers, and while the Bakers ultimately stole the thunder here (and rightfully so), the main villain of Revelations 2 was the best villain they had in the series since they killed off Wesker. Anyways, story was a nice plus, especially coming off of RE6 and Revelations 1 which faltered a lot in this area I felt. MAKE SURE to get the True Ending, there's a choice you make (which isn't clear it's a choice) in Episode 3 of Claire's campaign. There are no QTEs in the game except this one in Claire's campaign, ironically completing the QTE puts you on the bad ending path. Instead of doing the QTE, switch to Moira to go on the True End path, which the True Path is SO much better than the Bad Ending path. 02. The locations and level design I personally love. They have good variety to each other, and present locations you don't normally see in RE which provide interesting stages. While I wasn't fond of the Prison, the locales of the game started really growing on me with the Forest location onward. And the level design manages to fit in a lot of interesting varied scenarios. 03. I really liked the survival element in Revelations 2. I played on Hard my first playthrough, no regrets despite some bosses taking me a while to beat. Hard adds some smart enemy placements to make the game trickier, makes resources scarcer, but I personally loved it. Made me play strategically and slowly, plotting and pathing to overcome encounters. I really enjoyed that element of Revelations 2. 04. There's a lot of small charms and design things in the game. Things you do in Claire's campaign will effect Barry's, leading to different pathways Barry will need to take during his campaign. Revelations 2 has some of the best 'tense boss fights' in the series, as in fights which focus on intensity rather than pure fun, which fits well for the title. Some of the monsters are pretty neat. It's not loved by all, but it definitely has its fans. I do think RE4 is a much better (and polished) game than Revelations 2, but I can see how what Revelations 2 does could appeal to someone more than RE4 (or make someone not like Revelations 2, on the flip side). Rev 2 is a bit interesting in how it changes up several elements to be ambitious despite its low budget. What it does well, it does really well in my opinion. But it lacks in a few areas and is a bit janky to some other RE's, so it definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea. I think if you can accept it's a lower-budget kinda' janky RE game set on a cool dreary and muted Russian island setting, with likable characters and some varied 'tense' scenarios and increased survival elements (especially on Hard), then you may very well enjoy it.

RE7 sold well because a lot of people made a lot of assumptions of what it would be before release (due to RE6 and it being first-person, one thing is a lot of people are really judgmental on first-person horror currently, which is a shame), but it released with glowing reviews, huge YouTube coverage (game really blew up with YouTube Let's Plays and Twitch Streams), and very positive word of mouth. Some like to point it under performed (was 0.5 million behind expectations), but it did great and I think Capcom set those expectations due to that being how much RE6 sold in the same timeframe. RE7 as a single-player first-person horror game as a new style many were skeptical for the franchise selling only 0.5 million behind a crazy online co-op action game is mighty impressive, and it's now in a little over a year's time sold over 5 million copies. Horror game sales are a bit hard to talk about as horror hasn't been a popular AAA genre in over a decade. It is to note most horror-esque games in the last 5 years have done relatively well actually if developers kept their standards in check and planned for longer tails as horror games have longer tails in sales than most genres (The Evil Within 1 sold over 1 million in its first month and has to date sold over 4 million copies, Alien Isolation sold 1 million at launch but has sold over 2.5 million to date, Dying Light sold 2 million in first few months and has sold over 6 million a few years later, Until Dawn sold over 2 million in the first half a year, The Evil Within 2 has sold over 1 million copies in its first few months and may have gone past that since then). At the very least there is apparently 2 million or so people who buy AAA horror games within the first half a year or so of a game's release. Resident Evil 2 Remake has a lot of cards in its court I think will help it sell. I said this a few days ago, but still think it: You've got the time frames wrong. RE5 only recently (like last couple years) reached over 10 million, it didn't perform 10 million on launch. You're comparing how RE5 has done over 9 years to how RE7 has done in in less than a year and a half. I'd need to dig to get exact number, but if I recall RE5 sold 2-3 million in its first month (which was essentially the fiscal year as RE5 launched in March). RE7 was comparable by selling 3.5 million in 3 months. However, RE5 was releasing as the sequel to RE4, so anticipation was high, while RE7 was releasing as the sequel to RE6, so anticipation was low. RE5 also was co-op and played similarly to RE4, while RE7 was single player and was an entirely new gameplay style for the series. RE6 sold well despite critically bombing. REmake 2 has at least nine tricks up its sleeves in terms of how it'll perform. 01. It is a remake of a beloved classic, a classic which sold over 5 million copies back in the 90s and holds nostalgic value being over 20-years old. 02. The game is releasing on the heels of RE7, a game that was very well received and restored more consumers faith in the brand. 03. BUT for those who disliked the first-person perspective of the previous entry, it also is a return to third person, which some consumers want. 04. The game has high production values that shine through to many. People like shiny things, and REmake 2 looks better than RE7 before it. 05. The game actively is appealing to two user-bases; it has enough atmosphere, good sound design, survival emphasis, classic series staples, and disturbing enemies to appeal to horror fans, while enough good gameplay, visceral violence, detailed hit reaction, and interesting combat scenarios for action fans. It being able to strike more successfully than past entries with these two userbases at once will benefit it. 06. While tapping into RE2 nostalgia, it's also tapping into RE4 nostalgia, another of many people's favorite game of the series and even all time for a number of people. It's the first single-player focused game of its type since RE4, and one with a focus on the atmosphere like RE4 had. 07. It had an incrediably successful unveiling at E3 and benefited both from being one of the few surprises at Sony's conference and having a good demo. This is a case where I think Sony's new presentation style directly benefited Capcom. Also Capcom had the DMC5 reveal the day before this, which I think the two titles benefit rather than hurt the other from being unveiled and releasing closely together. Spaced out enough not to get in the others way, but close enough they may signal boost each other. 08. Early press and people who've played it at E3 are glowing about the game, making early word spread from the get-go. 09. The game's smaller announcement > release cycle benefits it heavily, ESPECIALLY as another beloved classic being remade (FFVII) announced right before REmake 2, is stalling and hasn't shown anything since its reveal. Meanwhile Capcom is almost done and releasing a very fine looking remake before the other comparable remake output even shows anything more, so Capcom gets free publicity and positive spins due to Square's failure there. I think it's definitely going to perform better than RE7 with all of this in mind. I'm predicting 5 million the fiscal year, over 8 million for the first actual year.

Heads-up, I think the stream Capcom TV did today confirmed Extreme Battle Mode. There was a new song from REmake 2 playing in the background of them talking in the stream. This was the clearest time stamp I could find where you can hear it (2 hours 6 minutes and 40 seconds in): I recognized it but couldn't place on where I'd heard it before, so I quickly went through all of RE2's music and I think I found it. It's a bit hard to hear, but I think it's a new take on the Extreme Battle Mode music from RE2: So if I'm hearing it right, I think it might confirm Extreme Battle Mode is in. There's a few songs for Extreme Battle Mode, but all of them use a few similar sounds to each other not used in the rest of RE2, and the song from the stream is using those same sounds (the drums, both the bigger and more military ones, this one low horn thing, and a few other touches), so I'm pretty certain even if not the exact song it's an Extreme Battle Mode song.

Gonna' be honest, until RE5 I didn't really care for Chris one way or another. Roger Craig Smith brought some good voice dynamic to the role, and though Chris in RE5 was still rather barebones personality, there was something there. Most people would slay me for suggesting this, but I think RE6 actually did Chris very well. His story is kinda' a retread of RE5's, yes. But Drunk Angry Chris who ultimately finds his path with Piers and returns to being a hero at the end, and then the final struggle, was more engaging a storyline with Chris than he's ever had. Frankly I think the series has been getting better writing, voice acting, and personality. Ethan despite being barebones was honestly not anymore so than Chris in RE1. The other characters in RE7 were full of personality though, and I think Revelations 2 also did characters well. REmake 2 what we've seen of Leon and Marvin is fantastic though.

That's my thoughts, the actual 1.5 is unfortunately kinda' dull, the game deaign was not yo to snuff to the concepts and I can 100% see why they scrapped it. But there were good and interesting ideas in there, I'm currently hoping the Man-Spider ends up in the game as it has potential. But also interested in completely new ideas for the remake. Right now the confirmed new locations are the gas station pitstop store for Leon's campaign, and a mysterious church. I have a guess how tje church may play into tje game, but it'll be interesting to see tje entirely new, returning, and 1.5 content and how they come together all the same.

I'm not a very big fan of monkey enemies generally either, and wasn't of the Gorillas in 1.5 myself (plus I HATED the Eliminators in Zero), but to be honest I kinda' want the Gorillas in REmake 2. Having this bulking fleshy meat Gorilla that's twice your height and width and packs a powerful strike (plus can swing from the ceiling and knock cars around if like 1.5) could actually be terrifying in a dark garage with the right sound design and execution. But I won't be too miffed if they don't make the cut either. I am rooting for Man-Spider, though.

I personally like the Main Hall Theme and Save Room Theme in REmake 2's demo, but the music has weird triggers. The Main Hall theme stops playing as soon as you interact with the PC or leave the main hall to go outside or to the East Wing (and takes a bit to get going so many may miss when it gets melodic), while the Save Room Theme only starts playing when you turn the light on in the save room beneath the stairs. The Main Hall theme is a nice sorta' darker, reverberated and lonlier feeling version of the RE2 Main Hall theme I like a lot (you can hear it best in the Famitsu video), while the Save Room theme is sorta a mix of the RE2/RE4 save theme. But the melodic music has strange triggers and close-off points. The Main Hall only playing for a short bit for most people is odd to me as the actual song sounds like it's over a minute long (and most may only hear 5 seconds of it) and could easily work playing each time you enter the main hall. And while turning the lights on and having the music wash over you is kinda' nice in concept, I think many missed you could even turn lights on in the demo. Meanwhile that (admittedly creepy) ambient drone when you enter the West Wing starts playing every time you enter the West Wing halls.

Irons role does seem to be expanded in the remake going by a note in the 3rd floor of RPD in the demo. It's an anonymous note, but it's totally Irons, talks about the corporation betraying him after all he's done for them, then about 'having fun' if it's going to be the end of the world. He's closed off the exits of the police station so no one can escape, and he planted C4 around the station as well but will have some fun before he blows them all to hell with the detonator. He says he locked a bunch of officers in a cage somewhere and is thinking of playing a fun game with one of the "goodie good" cops who challenged him on his corruption, giving him a gun and telling him he'd let all of the officers locked in the cage go if he'd choose to shoot and kill one of his fellow officers. It definitely sounds like his role has been expanded for the remake, and in Eliot's officer notebook you'll notice in the sketch there's a ??? location beneath the statue and RPD Police Station Basement you enter by elevator and leave by ladder to the parking garage. I and some others speculate as the secret tunnel beneath the statue seems to be a rumor and surprise to Marvin and the other officers, it's probably related to Irons, which might mean its an expanded torture dungeon. In RE2, Iron's has a torture dungeon you visit in Claire's campaign you access by elevator from Iron's office that's only a single room. Betting this may have been expanded into a full location and that's what's beneath the RPD Main Hall Statue.

Yup, it's been talked here some but not in full detail. For some reason the Remake of RE2 is pulling a LOT from Resident Evil 1.5. Something I've not seen anyone mention (and I only know this from having played the leaked 1.5 rom in-depth some) is the new shutters around the police station are from 1.5, there's a new locker room with steam blocking the way that's from 1.5, Marvin's expanded role in REmake 2 is similar to the role he was supposed to have in 1.5, and at the end of the REmake 2 demo Marvin spots Claire on a security camera and Leon goes to talk to her through a gate. Marvin telling Leon this and this specific meeting scene by a gate is also similar to something that happens in 1.5. It feels weird to have 1.5 things inserted back into the RE canon, but I'm not against it. It uses enemies well, and RE2 really helped form the series enemy identity going forward (RE1 had a bit more standard fair with a few stand-outs and no crazy mutations yet outside of Hunters and Chimeras). Birkin alone has five forms thiugh, Mr. X has two forms, and ignoring them there's still some decent variety though (zombies, crows, dogs, spiders, Lickers, Plant Lickers, Plant 43 Ivy's, G-Adult boss, Alligator boss, cockroaches in one segment with Sherry, and a single optional Giant Moth enemy). RE2 was a sorta' short game, though. They were condensed well. With 1.5 elements for some reason having their fingerprints all over this remake, I'm curious if we'll see the return of those giant meat gorillas or the Man-Spider -shudder- from 1.5 though.

I played 1.5 in-depth and used debug to see everything, so I can help a bit here. So in 1.5 the layout of RPD is quite different, I won't dig fully into that right now, but you get to the parking garage and fight these giant apes that escapes from a vehicle in the garage, the way out of the garage is blocked so you're forced to go through a sewer grate (the sewers are different than RE2, in the version of 1.5 that leaked there's no enemies in the sewers but there were supposed to be baby alligators and then a giant boss alligator that chased you in a later build of 1.5). You leave the sewers through a manhole cover and ladder and end up in this industrial sector of Raccoon City, you go through a warehouse (where you meet Birkin for the first time), then back to the streets that lead to a factory. The factory IS greatly expanded, it's a full location. The factory goes underground to a platform that leads to the Umbrella Labs, which also are greatly different than the original (and where the note-worthy creepy Man-Spider enemy appears). I'm theorizing REmake 2 may combine elements from 1.5 and RE2, as well as new ideas like its new church and gas station locations. RE2 kinda' followed 1.5's layout a bit but changed things. You went from RPD Basement > Parking Lot > Small Sewers (literally one room) > Water Treatment Center (like, four rooms) > Larger Sewers > Tram ride > Factory (two halls and a room) > Platform that leads to Labs. REmake 2 may combine RE2's and 1.5's locations while also adding new locales of its own.

There was a bleeding mechanic in 1.5 that was later used in Dino Crisis, and some character damage stuff. For REmake 2 they may do something there (noticably in Max's video after he goes out in the rain, Leon remains wet in the computer cutscene that follows). However, the damage system for zombies and Leon came from another mechanic in this game that's not revealed yet, it sorta' retroactively was added to make this other mechanic work, so I'm not sure if they'll go the 1.5 route there.

At the very least we know Tofu is in the game. Definitely, though the game is doing a lot of its own things in other areas. The stranger thing to me personally is the costume thing, if only as its a bit weird that Claire, Ada, and Mr. X have adopted their concept art appearances rather than their RE2 appearances. I don't dislike it, and sure each has a specific reason (Claire due to her RE2 outfit seeming almost stripper-esque on a photorealistic character, Ada's trenchcoat adds a noir air to her, Mr. X's new fedora and get-up add to his intended purpose to try and fit in more with humans at a distance and gives something to shoot off with the new damage system), but it still feels a bit weird. Leon is slightly altered in a new way not from concept art (he wears a jacket at first, obviously a homage to his reoccuring "has a cool jacket he loses after the beginning of the game" trend he later had in RE4 and RE6, then gets more practical body armor), and Sherry was updated to have more a European schoolgirl outfit than a Japanese one, which makes sense. I personally disagree, but I understand music is subjective.

RE3 was a longer game than RE2, and they shared very little in common. I also think there's a lot of room for RE2 to be expanded by itself, and a lot of room for RE3 to be expanded by itself. Plus it'd be weird that RE3 just stopped existing as an entity in the future. It'd ruin the series numbering. Plus both RE2 and RE3 had a ton of scrapped concepts worth exploring (REmake 2 is pulling a surprising amount from RE1.5 and RE2 concept art, Ada is wearing a trenchcoat she wore in RE2 concept art, Mr. X's fedora self is from RE2 concept art, Marvin's expanded role is from 1.5, etc.). RE2 and RE3 being conjoined never made sense to me, nor is what I want personally. Both games do far more different and uniquely than some give them credit for, and there's enough potential for both to stand alone and build further on their own ideas than be watered down and slapped together.

It's semi-hilarious to compare the original game's scene with Marvin to the Remake. Going from the ultra-cheesy, "Your party's been... canceled...", to an actually weighted scene that perfectly encapsulates Leon's early naivity to want to help in hell and Marvin's stern but good-willed notion to help his new coworker while under pain. No joke, I think the scene between Leon and Marvin is one of the best story scenes that the series has had due to the performances and subtle details (camera work, animations, etc), and if that's the level REmake 2 is aiming for with its story scenes, I'm looking forward to it.

The actual answer is indeed gameplay vs narrative desperity, one needs to remember that RE1/RE2 are earlier games that included a bigger story focus and full voice acting, so narrative and gameplay still had pretty big dissonance to each other. In the canon the characters are not getting chowed down every time the player does. The in-universe answer is beimg bitten does not automatically infect you, there's an infection rate from various thimgs (air, blood exposure, contact, damage), but you won't turn until your infection rate is 100%. Once you hit initial exposure, it very slowly infects you more and more, with certain things speeding up the rate of infection. If you're able to leave an infected zone before fully infected, you can remain alive and not turn. Various people have varying levels of immunity to the virus however, or the opposite some people have strange responses to it. Some are almost completely immune to infection, while others turn into more powerful monsters (like Tyrant candidates) when infected.

Thread: Resident Evil 2 Remake Gameplay Videos from E3 2018 & Discussion

You've got the time frames wrong.

I actually do think the UI is unfinished (and maybe a placeholder). On the menu there are D-pad quick assign buttons (as in, could quick assign certain weapons and items to the D-pad from the inventory), but for some reason you can't do this in the demo, there's no option for it in your inventory. That screams "Work-in-Progress" to me, but that also doesn't mean they'll change the visual look later, just that the UI isn't finished.

This is me purely speculating, but I think that Mr. X and Birkin may function sorta' like Jack from RE7, just... Not him and more RE2-like where they dynamically roam and area and can travel through rooms. My current guess from the teaser quip is that Claire deals with Mr. X first (as we see it's Claire hiding from Mr. X) while Leon deals with William Birkin and defeats Birkin's first form. Then Birkin mutates into Phase 2 and takes out Mr. X in the scene we see after she's been trying to get away from Mr. X's stalking. At this point Birkin replaces him as Claire's primary stalking antagonist (as Birkin is looking for Sherry and finds her with Claire). Meanwhile, Leon has to deal with Phase 2 Mr. X when Mr. X rejuvenates and let's go of his power restricting bonds to turn into the full T-102 form. I think both Leon and Claire will deal with Phase 3 and 4 Birkin. I could be completely off, but I'm placing my bets Leon deals with Birkin Phase 1 & Mr. X Phase 2, while Claire deals with Mr. X Phase 1 and Birkin Phase 2. I think after Birkin takes our Mr. X there in that scene in Claire's campaign, and then Mr. X comes back as his ripped nude form and Leon will have to handle that, while Claire has to handle the mutated Birkin Phase 2.

I can confirm this from watching through the E3 gameplay videos. The map works like REmake/Zero in that a you don't see rooms you haven't visited until you get a map. Once you have a map, the rooms you haven't visited are grayed out, rooms you've visited but not collected/done everything in are red, and rooms you've cleared everything in are blue. If you got close enough to an item (as in, got close enough to have an item icon pop-up in-game to prompt you to pick up said item up) but didn't pick it up, that item will show up on your map. Saw this happen in the example of an herb one player skipped but got close enough to look at.

I've never believed this to be true since I know a few things it says to be false. I'll only tackle two points to give an example. Moving to the RE Engine in late 2016 is entirely untrue, as well as how they started work on the remake is inaccurate. RE3 REmake is not in any sort of active development right now.

The last page reminds me of one of the biggest tips I ever got for working on games: Be picky of what critique you take on the games you create, many gamers don't know the differences between actual critique and personal preference. I see a lot of people stating personal preference as fact or a critique everyone would agree with (on preferences for what they should remake), which frankly is not true, and just got me thinking about that old piece of advice.

It's true, RE2 honestly had the weakest puzzles out of all the older games. There's 8 things in RE2 that could remotely be called 'puzzles', three of them are pushing puzzles (one puzzle as Sherry/Ada you push crates to make a bridge to cross, one puzzle you push two statues to face another statue, and another crate puzzle in the B scenario before the labs to get to a ledge you can climb), and two puzzles have the answers directly in notes (the Locker combination puzzle and the registration name puzzle). The other three puzzles are a puzzle you flip switches to equal a certain amount, a puzzle you place card symbols down in a specific order, and a puzzle you move bookshelves by seeing the order they go in after you fall through the floor. This one slice of REmake 2 honestly has better puzzles than the original RE2 I would say.

My assumption is they want to expand his role in that sorta' older "RE Crazy" (IE, like Alfred in Code Veronica, Lucas in RE7, Salazar in RE4, etc.) so they can do some interesting scenarios with him. Having Irons want to have fun with the remaining survivors allows for a few twisted and different gameplay scenarios in RPD. Honestly, he was a bit over-the-top mad in the original, just he barely appeared before the G-Adult is birthed out of him. Hoping they can spin some interesting little scenarios out of him.

I think it helps that the Sony thing was on-stage, so most people who don't really watch horror things were exposed to it. Frankly, TLOU stuff wasn't bad, but seemed tame to my standards. RE's gore is goofier visceral in some ways, but I can dig it. I think the difference stems from grander exposure. RE is a horror series and most keeping up with it are in some capacity horror fans.

I think RE7 would've benefited from a difficulty between Normal and Madhouse, so I'm hoping REmake 2 has a regular Hard difficulty with ink ribbons and maybe a few difficulty shifts up before a special difficulty with remixed elements. Also confirm outside of the initial game (and death, I'd assume), they aimed for REmake 2 to have no loading times and be pretty seamless experience. No door opening animations, but they hope they made an enriching gameplay experience so people can forgive that.

They put a lot of effort into making the shooting feeling good and dismemberment, and confirm (though a bit obvious) that they were aiming for limited resources and less resources than there are zombies, but wanted to make when you shoot satisfying and with response. Saw our first look at the save screen, it looks a lot like REmake's and Zero's with a typewriter in the background with file slots. This is just my opinion, but I really like REmake 2's take on the Main Hall Theme personally. This is all a matter of taste though. You can hear the Main Hall Theme at this timestamp in the Famitsu video: The only thing is that the volume of the music is quiet in the demo. I think a big part of it is that many zombie games have kinda' gone done a route for 'standard zombie', making them more a popcorn unit and honestly a 'sterilized' version of itself. Add to this it's been done to death. REmake 2 however instead of just making a popcorn zombie is actually putting in effort to make an interesting morbid take on zombies, focusing on why they're scary and nailing it. A lot of small things, like the diversity in appearance (a lot of zombie games all the zombies look kinda' the same, while REmake 2 will certainly have repeating zombie models there's a WIDE variety of them and of all sorts of different body types, plus the body types actually make some gameplay difference in how you tackle them), the fact they actually look morbid and gnarly, the animations are on-point, they lumber like a zombie but tail you and can corner you and provide an actual threat alone, plus their damage system is surprisingly well done yet grotesque (the GameSpot video where the guy is shooting the one zombie in the face and it's not dying, shooting off layers of face skin so you see the muscles and then the skull beneath, actually was both awesome and terrifying at once). It's one of the few games to focus on making the zombies have personality and try to tap into what fundamentally makes a zombie scary, which if often forgotten due to the popular media depiction of them and how overused they are. Plus it also helps RE2 won't really have an issue in enemy variety, so zombies aren't all that the player will be dealing with. RE7 let you turn that off, so I bet REmake 2 will as well. The bright side is it isn't all knowing, after the initial shutter scene you're tasked with finding three medallions, but the map doesn't tell you where they are.

He did not, but for the record, though I don't know this, I get the feeling he's talking a lot in that first scene in the East Hall due to being a rookie and having to face undead coworkers and fail to save one of them. He quiets down on the chatter after that scene notably in all the videos. I think it's a good character touch actually. If he chatted the whole game constantly, that'd be one thing. But I think it works for that scene and the occasional quip.

I don't know how long since there's a LOT I don't know, like I don't know maybe half the areas in the game, or the final result of some things, and just a lot of things in general, but yes. One thing I know for certain is the game is much longer than the original RE2. The areas from RE2 make up less than half of the game from what I hear. Also both campaigns have area differences, one I can speak on is I know Leon's campaign starts at a Gas Station and its Pitstop Store, while Claire's campaign starts at an entirely different point (a Diner I think, but I may be wrong on her's) before they meet up, and then get separated. Not only will both campaigns go to new locations that weren't in RE2 and be a lot longer than RE2s campaign, they have more differences to each other than the original RE2 did.

Not at this E3, but I am certain we will in the future. I think they want to keep the differences between the two campaigns a surprise for now. It says in a quick text in the off-screen gameplay (loading demo summary of events) that Leon and Claire met but got separated. I bet how Leon and Claire enter and do RPD Station will be very different, it's looking like Leon A starts the RPD Station with him entering through the front entrance, and Claire B with her entering through the back entrance. For the record, Leon's campaign starts at a Gas Station and the Pitstop Store by the Gas Station, while Claire's campaign starts at a Diner (I think for Claire, know for Leon). I definitely don't forget it. The creator of the D 'trilogy' who founded WARP, Kenji Eno, died in February of 2013 at the age of 42 due to heart failure. Eno was a true visionary in games and still has a cult audience after his passing for his bizarre but innovative games and 'rockstar' persona which was very unusual in Japanese game developers.

Thread: Why women criticise sexualised character designs (READ OP)

For the record, I don't usually post in this thread or sometimes similar threads as I feel I don't have too much to contribute myself, but I'm interested in learning from others words and viewpoints. So I can attest I'm a lurker, I love people in general and often work to have a better understanding of others, so I value the work a number of people have been putting here to express their feelings, observations, and issues. They are perspectives and sharings that hold value for me for better understanding of people in different situations than I, what is important to care about on their behalf, and topics and issues I may otherwise not personally have but have meaning to others. The deeper you understand another's plight, the more you can contribute to make life better for others is how I view it.

Thread: Steam Summer Sale 2018 |OT| 6/21 - 7/5. Yes, it's still just 33% off.

*Available on Steam, there are physical versions of Silent Hill 2, 3, & 4 available. Since it's fucking Konami those have never come to Steam though. Homecoming is my least favorite mainline Silent Hill game, BUT it's not absolutely terrible or anything. It's got it's moments and good points. Just know the game is more Silent Hill The Movie: The Game than a regular Silent Hill game. It has a lot more in common with the Silent Hill film than it does with the rest of the series, I'm convinced at one point Homecoming was a game tie-in for the film. Just know if you end up disliking or being meh on it that it's not representative of the series as a whole, but I think you'll be fine as detaching itself from the rest of the series it's still a pretty decent little B-Horror game.

I don't think they should be scared, Edith Finch is more walking simulator while TellTale and Dontnod are more "Narrative Game". But I agree, Edith Finch is an amazing walking sim and maybe one of if not the best to be made so far. Great story, magical moments, interesting and detailed setting, great music... It honestly is an amazing game.

Once upon a time there was stuff like that, but it's changed so the deals stay the same the whole sale. THIS SAID, I would wait a bit. Usually in the first few hours when traffic is high, not all sales are accurate and not all games supposed to be on sale are on sale yet. Give it a few hours and should all be sorted though. It is just straight down right now, to see if it's performing better when it comes back online.

I really enjoyed The Evil Within 2, would definitely recommend. It's got a few high and low moments, but had a lot of charm I thought and at it's best it's a very engaging gameplay experience. Especially loved the open world chapters where you can do a lot of interesting (actually interesting) side missions. On the surface that may not sound like a good fit for a horror game, but they played the mystery and unknown element in these very well so you don't really know what to expect when you go exploring.

I'm being a bit restrictive this summer sale due to a few things I need to buy and financial responsibility this summer, but will definitely poke around, buy a few things, and recommend some horror and quirky hidden gems when the store is more sorted and I'm less busy. There's a high chance there's some good hidden games about if you don't mind going for some games you've never heard of Store is still a bit broken, I've been playing that simple little space shooter game thing, and been leveling up and getting items, but can't wear them yet and no planet progress yet. But at least I'll have a bit of a lead on level-ups, and frankly once you figure out the systems in the game it's pretty simple. It's primarily a giveaway, IE do well in the game to win other games.
