Thread: Pokémon Let's Go Eevee/Pikachu (Switch) announced; coming Nov 16th 2018

I absolutely adore this. Wild Pokémon in the overworld, riding Pokémon (Flying around on Charizard!), local Co-Op, Pokémon Go catch mechanics, nice graphics, customization for your main buddies, battles still turn-based as traditional, etc. The only thing I'm mixed on is no more wild Pokémon battles - but it is something I won't miss as it was mostly just busywork to me. I also suspect that you will still need to fight and beat legendary Pokémon before catching them - like Raids in Pokémon Go. I never played Pokémon for competition, challenge, or complexity, and even if I did, I'd find it hard to get upset at this game as they confirmed that they are working on a traditional / 'core' title as well. I'm in.

Thread: Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire |OT| Our Vital Status is Fluid Lately

Underwhelmed by this episode. The story and writing were good, but the map feels barren, the meta feels incomplete, the mount has no real purpose, and there are no long-term achievement goals, unique rewards, or interesting / rewarding repeatable content. The meta event seems like it was intended to be a map-wide three-lane event that was heavily cut down due to time constraints. Collecting spare parts is not exciting, re-calibrating the cannons is just waiting around for waves of fodder enemies, the assault on the fortress is basically just a single 'boss' fight that doesn't seem to have any interesting mechanics and is over in the blink of an eye, and the rewards aren't exciting. There's no real reason to go into the northern part of the map, there's nothing to do in the swamp, the entire section in the west with the lake can only be accessed through two points and doesn't really have any relevant content, there's no real reason to visit the part of the map with the corsairs after you finish their heart task, and all of the water in the east part of the map is essentially dead space as there are no events there and you don't even have to navigate it to get to the meta. The beetle mount is cute and can be fun, but its use is extremely limited as the boost ability taking so long to charge on initial mount essentially restricts its use to when you happen to be at the top of a slope. The new map does not seem to be designed to make the most of the beetle, and I end up finding it much more convenient to just use my griffin or another mount. The ability to break through walls will likely never be utilized again due to access to the mount being limited to this episode. Even within this new map, when you have unlocked the points of interest locked behind them, there is no reason to ever break these walls ever again. There's a general lack of rewards and as far as I can see there are no real long-term goals or interesting achievements to work towards. The one 'long-term' achievement has to do with Inquest turrets, which is barely a relevant mechanic and is completely uninteresting, with the first tier boiling down to killing several hundreds of Awakened Inquest for random blueprint drops. There's the banner, but the achievement for it doesn't require me to do anything that I haven't already done before. I'm frustrated with the lack of rewards, the lack of progression after level 80 and attaining Ascended gear, and the refusal to utilize existing content in general. It just seems all the interesting stuff (mount skins, armor and weapon skins) gets put in the Gem Store or locked behind Black Lion Chests, with occasional updates adding ridiculous time / gold sinks that are unattainable for regular players. I'd love to collect more glyphs for my gathering tools, but you can only get them from gambling on Black Lion Chests or through purchasing new sets of unbreakable gathering tools through the Gem Store, they are basically useless if you don't have permanent gathering tools, and the one I would really like to have on all my tools currently goes for some 5000G on the trading post. I could get breakable variants from merchants, but that adds a lot of busywork, eats up resources over time, and devalues the unbreakable tools I currently have. That Sunken Treasure Hunter thing they added is cool, but very heavily time-gated, with the higher infusions and the unique breather skin essentially locked behind a combination of a very high paywall and an insane time-sink, rendering them completely unattainable to anybody but whales and the wealthiest trading post barons - not to mention that this addition is very puzzling in the first place considering ArenaNet completely abandoned underwater content a long time ago and has not voiced any interest in returning to it anytime soon. I'd love to collect that new Desert King weapon skin set, but they're locked behind Black Lion Tickets, which are in turn locked behind Black Lion Chests, which are locked behind Black Lion Chest Keys, which are essentially only available through the Gem Store. I'd love to be able to work towards obtaining new mount skins ... but again, those are all Gem Store exclusive. I'm currently working on getting Incinerator, but it doesn't really feel like I'm actively working towards anything - I'm just passively grinding the same content over and over again for generic rewards that incrementally build up to me eventually being to craft it. I'd love to get some high-tier WvW armor skins, or that Legendary Backpack - but they are locked behind incredibly high WvW rank requirements that I will probably never reach even if I switch to full-time WvW for a year, and would generally eat into the resources I am currently building to be able to craft Incinerator. The one other reward I really want is the Radiant Hauberk armor skin - but that is locked behind 30K achievement points, which I will never be able to reach unless ArenaNet significantly ups both the amount of achievements available and the points you get from them. Yet somehow I still come back every time. I don't know what it is. Perhaps it is the community - though I am souring on that now too. Yet somehow I still keep playing. So I suppose they're doing something right ~

Tried to clear up the title a bit, this is confusing. @ It seems like they skipped numbering initially for the Japan titles. Warriors Orochi > Musō Orochi Warriors Orochi 2 > Musō Orochi: Rebirth of the Demon Lord Warriors Orochi 3 > Musō Orochi 2 This announcement is for Musō Orochi 3, which will presumably just be named Warriors Orochi 4 outside of Japan.

, I'm very glad to hear that your family is understanding, accepting and supportive! I don't know the exact circumstances, but I'm happy that you found acceptance close to you. I know it is easy to get dragged back into regret at this moment, but ... talk to them about that too. I think talking to them about everything, even all the worries and regrets you have, might help you process them. I know it helped me. Maybe that's advice you don't need and you're already doing it, but I want to give it anyway. I hope that their acceptance helps you turn things around. I'm a bit late to the party, but hi and welcome! I'm sorry to hear you're in this situation. That last line sounds like insanity to me... Requiring you to live as your gender for a year while your ID still displays your old one before you can actually have it changed seems ... entirely backwards to say the least. Yeah, this topic isn't very active. Most of us have moved to Discord, as Ketkat already pointed out. I think many of us feel they can talk a bit more freely there. You're free to join us! <3 On a different note: I will be putting up a thread for the International Transgender Day of Visibility. I hope to have it up five hours from now at the latest. In the OP I will spotlight some transgender individuals and their work and briefly talk about issues the transgender community still faces. If you are interested in contributing to the thread - be it by sharing a personal story, spotlighting a transgender individual you find inspiring, talking about an issue we face that you want people to be more aware of, or just saying hi -, I would encourage you to jump in.

Heya, Dutch trans person here. <3 I'm going to say something that is probably not what you want to hear, and something some people here will probably take some issue with, but I feel like I should say it anyway. Get yourself on that waiting list right now. You will inevitably be referred to them at one point in the future and the waiting lists are only going to get longer because they don't have enough people to properly deal with the increase in applications. Going into DiY HRT seems incredibly unwise to me personally. Perhaps I do not know enough about it, but fact is that hormones will have effects on your body, and using them without medical supervision is not something I would recommend, regardless of how safe it may or may not be. You will very likely end up having to go through the 'official' trajectory at the gender clinic anyway, and it will lead to potential problems there. They don't like having people come in on stuff that they don't know about and haven't been able to track or supervise and without having an idea of how it has affected their bodies. I know it is not what you want to hear, but it is the only honest advice I can give you. I know it is hard to accept the long waiting times - I went through them myself too - but I feel like DiY HRT just isn't a wise idea for a multitude of reasons. During the waiting time I'd get started on laser hair removal for facial hair and start looking into other avenues that could perhaps relieve the dysphoria in little ways. That can be anything - perhaps exploring make-up or clothes if you are interested and haven't already, or just looking for support in support groups, or looking for a psychologist (which could help lay some groundwork for the diagnostic phase at the gender clinic and perhaps shorten that process there when you get to it) or someone else to talk to. I understand the temptation, I really really do, but if you are going the DiY route, you must be open to the possibility that it might cause more trouble than it is worth in the long run. If you feel like immediately starting DiY is the only option, then I won't (and can't) stop you, but I felt like it was worth sharing my opinion / insight on this regardless.

I'm happy to see it's getting so cozy in here. ^w^ My mood has been swinging up and down a bit over the last few days. I just switched out all my clothes to anticipate the colder weather, and 90% of my clothes are just what I still have from before I even realized. I want to get out and change it all up, but feel my current body shape makes it difficult, I have no idea what to look for, and I have barely any time to even go out due to study-related work. On the plus side, I genuinely feel better now that I've been on hormones for a while. Perhaps that is just a placebo effect, but an effect is an effect. ^w^ I also feel some changes starting to happen in my chest area, which is much earlier than I expected.

It may just be that they need time, or that they are concerned for your well-being, but I can't really say as I do not know them or what they said. Do you feel like you can talk to them about it? I don't believe your father should have the final say in how you choose to present yourself, who you choose to share your identity with, or when you choose to do so. This is perhaps grossly premature advice, but I want to give it anyway: If they ever turn to denying you your identity, you should remember that family is defined by more than just blood.

Just like everything else, it's going to be different for everyone. For me it was less about my new name 'fitting with my gender', and more about my old name being part of an identity that is no longer mine. Robin just popped into my head and immediately 'felt' right, despite it being a generally uni-sex name and despite all celebrities with the name I can think of being male. Fun fact; right after I had settled on Robin, but before I had come out to anyone, I was biking through town and a random kid from a larger group shouted 'Are you Robin!?' at me as I biked past them. I hit the brakes and turned around and was like 'What, why?' and he was like 'Well why did you stop then?'. It was probably just some trolling thing, but it kinda freaked me out at the time. xD

Some of the feelings you describe are similar to those I went through when I was trying to figure myself out. I don't have much to add as Robin already said everything I was going to say but better. x3 This is incredibly important advice and something I struggled with a lot while I was figuring myself out and even for a while after I was certain of my own 'transness'. You don't need to prove yourself to anyone, only you can truly tell who you are inside. Remember that, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

You can pledge allegiance to a faction only during Faction Rally events. When you do so, you get tokens for that faction from doing events during the Faction Rally. Xur has nothing for me again. The only exotics I'm missing are Lucky Raspberry, ST0MP-EE5, and Legend of Acrius + upgrade. I wish Bungie would give Xur more stuff to sell. Alternatively, maybe have him give out a quest each week with the reward being a choice of one of the Exotics he is selling at max Power Level. The quest could send you out into Lost Sectors on the planet to gather items of interest for Xur / The Nine. That would make both Xur and Lost Sectors a bit more compelling.

Very odd, it's showing up just fine for me. Perhaps if I provide just the link; Very happy to see that update from Bungie. It's nice to have them state what they are specifically working on. Spending or not spending Tokens depends on what your power level at the moment is and what you want in terms of weapons / armor. I believe Token gear stops directly increasing your power level when you reach 265. If you want a specific weapon or piece of armor from a certain vendor's loot pool, I'd say go for it now, but otherwise I'd hang onto the tokens for when you hit 305; certain vendors have a chance to drop their engrams at max power level (300 without mod) at that point. I believe there is a site that tracks this, but I can't find the link at the moment. Greens can and should be dismantled, blues can be too - except for scout rifles. For the Mida Multi-Tool Exotic quest later on, you'll need to dismantle five Rare or Legendary Scout Rifles. If you hang on to them now you won't have to look for them when you reach that step.

Honestly, don't worry too much about it. I got my first character to 305 without following any guide, through playing whatever I wanted and spending Tokens whenever I felt like it. You will hit a speed-bump when you reach 265, but mods, Exotics, and Milestones will help you over that bump in no time, even if you just stick to what you enjoy on your own pace.

With this fresh start I feel like being much more active in communities now. :) Update on my fashion endgame for those who even remember from before; The Io Flashpoint was a godsend for my Hunter; I finally got to complete that armor set and it looks pretty good with Omolon Meteor on. I ran the Iron Banner Cloak for a bit, but I feel A Cloak Called Home is just the overall best looking Hunter Cloak out there right now. It's simple and clean. I also ended up finishing my first full Raid, which strikes another goal from my list. Next up; Legend of Acrius and Prestige Nightfall. I'd say the Raid is overall enjoyable, but our final run during the Gauntlet was cut short some five times in a row due to just a single Guardian slipping up barely a second too early, leading to the revive timer wiping us. I wouldn't mind if Bungie looked into the flexibility of the revive timer for that specific part of the Normal Raid.

Why hello there all. o/ I didn't post much in here in the old community, but perhaps I will better my ways here with this fresh start. Very much enjoyed the added achievements for Halloween; they got me right up to 9000 AP. Also is it just me or is the Serpent's Ire meta in the Domain of Vabbi near impossible to do? It's the last thing I need to do for the Funerary collection, but there's barely any groups on LFG running it, and the few groups that I did get into just could not get the final phase beaten due to the high amounts of DPS and CC needed. It doesn't help that a lot of people just straight-up ignore the meta or run bounty-trains while it is going on, which makes it hard to actually get into a map where everyone is helping...

What an absolutely terrible design. This was her in Soul Calibur II - Cool, confident, barely sexualized (aside from her pants hanging so low that they expose a bit of her butt for no real reason), and is that some muscle definition I see there? This was her in Soul Calibur III - Long pants, a nice small vest, nothing much objectionable or extremely sexualized. Then it starts going off the rails in Soul Calibur IV - Pants got shorter and see-through, panties pulled up slightly above the pants, back to just a bra but it’s smaller this time. And now we have this in Soul Calibur VI - Wat happened to her pants? Why are they even shorter now and what’s with those bizarre cut-outs in the sides to reveal more skin? How do these even stay on? Why are her panties pulled up so far and why are they so tight that they dig into her skin? Why is her bra just two straps of fabric seemingly designed to reveal under-boob? What’s with that dumb ‘confused child’ look on her face? Also, what happened to her skin color across these four games? Just terrible. This character is 15 btw.

Thread: Community Spotlight: REgals [Women of Era] |OT| Episode I: The Female Menace

I appreciate everything you do, I really do, but I very strongly believe that we are not 'going to get there' with current moderation policies. I've seen people get second chances that they absolutely did not deserve based on the offending post and / or their post history. There are a fair few posters that consistently post shitty things or are shitty to others, but because they never have that one single post that would be considered 'actionable' on its own, they're allowed to get away with it. There have been several posts that I would view as clearly over the line, yet when reported either nothing happens or I get told that it is 'unactionable' - one of the more recent of these was a poster continuing behavior in one thread that he was told to stop by a member from the mod/admin team and then warned for for continuing anyway in another (now locked) thread. An example that I feel comfortable giving here because the person in question is perma-banned now anyway; In the Jim Sterling thread, someone called Jim an 'obese cuck'. The user got a perma-ban, not for that insult, but for being an alt account. Why wasn't the content of the post itself enough for a perma-ban? Why should someone who makes an unprovoked direct attack on another member of this forum, using alt-right terminology, be welcomed back at any point? Why should I feel comfortable posting in a thread where they are posting too? This wasn't a heated debate about something controversial - it was an unprovoked hateful attack. That they would've been allowed to come back at any point if they hadn't been an alt-account just sends me a message that unprovoked hateful attacks like that are OK so long as you 'don't do it again'. I know that that isn't the message you want to send, but it is the message that I receive. I get the desire to give people a second chance. I really do. I understand why it is important. But you should also be able to recognize that some people just clearly do not deserve a second chance, let alone a third or fourth. One user on this site has gotten a warning, a 1-week ban, a 48-hour ban, and has several questionable posts in between. He decided to continue his trollish and shitty behavior this past weekend. I would have assumed his chances were more than spent at this point - he had been repeatedly warned / banned for the same behavior and consistently returned to that behavior after returning from those bans, something that already should've provoked a much harsher response when he did it again after his first ban. Yet he was just given another chance - another temporary 1-week ban. Why? I reported that member through their profile with the request to make their current ban permanent. I was told that it had been discussed by the moderation team, who passed it on to the admin team, and now an admin told me that the mod team captains will look at it. At this point I have very little faith that anything will actually happen before the current temporary ban expires. And the pessimist in me says that when it expires I'll probably get told that they now can't 'just ban him outright' and that I'll just have to wait until he inevitably resumes his shitty posting behavior. All of this just pushes me away because . I'm hesitant to report things because I simply do not know where the line is for the mod team to consider something 'actionable' - I only know that that line clearly isn't where it should be. I'm posting less, because I don't feel like putting energy into this forum when people can just be shitty and get away with it with the frequency they do now - because I just don't feel that current moderation policies are in the long run going to create a community that I want to be part of. I've talked a lot about this on Discord, so I'm sure this has reached you in some way already, but I felt like posting this here too to add my voice to others. Anyway, Sorry for that rant. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. <3: Some minor spelling / text fixes.: After talking back and forth for a bit, some clarification on the 'specific' examples I provided above; The 'obese cuck' poster would have been permanently banned for the contents of the post, it is just that the alt account was caught at the same time the request for extension to permanent ban was filed, and extending to permanent for the alt account was apparently easier / quicker. The second case is still being discussed internally and their ban was already extended to a month (though the ban message hadn't yet been updated to show that). I'm happy to have been provided these explanations for these specific instances (as well as some general conversation on mod policy), but my dissatisfaction with current moderation policy in general still stands. I'm glad that this voice is being heard and hope that it will lead to some internal discussion. I think there's a lot of space to move while still keeping plenty distance from how things were done on the old site.

Could you perhaps go into more detail about your issues with that video then? Because I don't feel like you really understood it if you think it goes 'directly against' the concept of the 'death of the author'. And could you also explain what you think 'the death of the author' is? I feel like you either didn't understand the point of that video, or don't understand what 'the death of the author' is, or possibly both. I'm confused - this is about the video on The Thermian Argument, right? 'Intent' is not brought up once in that video. Here's what he says at the end; "Criticism of a creative work is ultimately criticism of the decisions that people made when putting it together." When we criticize sexualization of female characters in videogames, we are criticizing the to sexualize those female characters. Bringing up in-world justifications in an attempt to nullify that criticism is not a compelling argument, because that in-world justification is . The in-world justification is , thus bringing it up to dismiss said criticism is pointless because it in essence what we are criticizing. The 'death of the author' is in no way in conflict with that. 'The death of the author' is about artist intent, and how it ceases to matter once the work is published. If a work sends a message that is criticized, that criticism cannot simply be dismissed by arguing that the author 'didn't intend it that way', because the intent of the author does not override the message that is actually taken from or sent or implied by their work. Intent can be relevant, of course, but it is not something that by definition overrides the work and the message that is taken from it. These two concepts are not contradictory. I didn't follow this specific line of discussion from the start - I am merely responding to your claim that these two concepts (The Thermian Argument / Death of the Author) somehow go 'directly against each other'. Huh? Where did I do that?

Thread: Why women criticise sexualised character designs (READ OP)

Apologies to just burst in here with a mega-post, but the whole female Link / female protagonist for mainline Zelda thing has been on my mind for a while now. I would’ve probably eventually made a thread about it, but I know exactly how that is going to turn out and I just … do not have the energy for that. So I’ll just put it here as there was some discussion about it earlier. It turned out quite rant-y, so apologies in advance for that. .x. This post is not directed at anyone here in specific. --- Whenever someone says ‘Well, then why not change Mario to be a girl? Or Lara Croft to be a man?’ in a discussion about a female protagonist in The Legend of Zelda, I roll my eyes because those types of questions so completely and utterly miss the point. Nobody is asking for Mario to be a girl. Nobody is asking for Samus or Lara Croft to be a man. The Legend of Zelda comes up in these discussions about female protagonists because it has a specific history. Part of it is statements like these from Aonuma; Link, to many players, is an avatar. The above statements by Aonuma reinforce that belief. Link does not speak, because Link should be you - therefore Link cannot have an own voice. You can change Link’s name, because Link should be you - therefore Link cannot have an own name. You may disagree with this interpretation of Link as an avatar and say that they are moving away from the idea of ‘Link as an avatar’ - something which you can probably also find Aonuma quotes in support for -, but that does not erase these previous statements and the expectations or interpretations some have built on them. It’s stories like a father Or another parent so that their daughter can enjoy the game later in her life without the hard-coded male gender aspect for the protagonist. People modding Zelda to, you know, It’s how the franchise has a built-in excuse if it would ever want to change the gender of the main character; these are all different Links, different incarnations, re-incarnations. A new incarnation could just happen to turn out female, and basically zero explanation would be required for that as that explanation is essentially already built into the lore. Then there’s the fact that the series is literally named after a female character - perhaps some feel she deserves the spotlight for once? The desire for a female protagonist in a Zelda game is genuine - it didn’t spring out of nowhere. When Aonuma said this in a 2014 Kotaku interview; You can probably understand why some people got excited. So when he then followed that up in 2016 with; You can probably understand why those people were disappointed. I personally found Aonuma’s 2016 statements lacking. They felt like an evasion. An evasion of responsibility through attributing his creative decision to an element of the lore that he then does not further explain. Did he not also create that element of the lore? And why is that element so important? It seems like a completely arbitrary ‘balance’ - one I never consciously noticed or identified as crucial to the franchise because the concept of it seems entirely arbitrary and unimportant to the overall games. How does having a female protagonist ‘upset’ that ‘balance’ anyway? Those statements came off to me as Aonuma claiming that he does not have the power to do something, because something he supposedly cannot control would be ‘messed with’. Yet that thing that would be ‘messed with’ is something of his own creation too. Something he can entirely control. As the author, he controls everything. He can change things to suit his every need. And he has. Nintendo has. Take the idea of a Zelda timeline for example. Miyamoto gave a general order to put the games in after a few were out, yet after that there was nothing for a while. Aonuma indicated a split timeline with comments he made about Twilight Princess, but at the same time made no commitment to a complete interlinked timeline involving all games. Certain games were clearly linked in story or lore, but others were not. Nintendo denied a timeline existed at all. Then in 2011, both the Hyrule Historia and Skyward Sword were released - Hyrule Historia containing an ‘official’ timeline including all games, Skyward Sword seeming like an attempt to create an origin for the franchise and an effort to tie key elements of the franchise to this one origin point. The ‘official’ timeline did not line up with the Miyamoto order, and introduced an unanticipated third timeline to the split. Lore was changed or added to make some of the connections work. Then just recently, Aonuma backed off again - claiming that the timeline is not something that concerns him, that it is something that isn’t considered when creating a Zelda game, that he likes to leave it ‘up to the imagination’ of others. The timeline, what it looks like, whether it exists, whether it is even important or relevant - those are all things that changed over time to suit the needs of Nintendo / Aonuma. Things changed to suit their needs or views. Because they are the author, and thus they control everything. Breath of the Wild arguably changed through a different gameplay focus and the introduction of new systems and a more open world than ever before. In Twilight Princess, Link was a wolf with an alternate-dimension side-kick. In The Minish Cap, Link had a talking hat that allowed him to shrink. In the Wind Waker, Link had a talking lion boat and Zelda was a kick-ass pirate with a different name for a while. In Spirit Tracks, Zelda was a ghost-sidekick whom you could have possess suits of armor and Link was a train driver. Link’s Awakening didn’t have Zelda. Majora’s Mask barely had Zelda. The Oracle games did not have Zelda unless you linked them. Ganon / Ganondorf is not present in some eight games in the series. Vaati had nothing to do with the Triforce. Breath of the Wild has a horse motorcycle. One of the concepts for Breath of the Wild had an alien invasion as part of the story. New lore can always be added. Old lore can always be retconned, otherwise amended, or expanded upon. As the author, Aonuma holds the power to change anything he wants, whenever he wants, for whatever reason, This idea that Aonuma cannot think of anything for Link to do if Link is not the main character, this idea that Aonuma cannot think of any way to circumvent an entirely fictional concept that he himself created, this idea that Aonuma is somehow unable to think of a way to support a female protagonist - that is something I find almost insulting in the context of all the above. He can change whatever he wants, whenever he wants, and for whatever reason. That he claims that he cannot when talking about a female protagonist is something I take issue with, because it means that he is either creatively incompetent in this specific space, or not being honest with us about why he made the decision. But I’m happy to provide him with some ideas! Have Zelda be the protagonist with Link being the ‘dude in distress’. Could just play that straight, or you could put a twist on it. Like; a young new Zelda is being trained by an older, more experienced Link. Due to his experience and wisdom, the Triforce of Wisdom passes on to that older Link - losing the Triforce of Courage in the process. Then Link is the one who gets in trouble, and the younger Zelda takes it upon herself to fix everything - ending with the Triforce of Courage passing down to her for her display of courage. If you feel that that messes with the ‘balance’ too much, you can always just say that it was a ‘quirk of fate’ - that the Triforce acted outside its usual limits due to unforeseen circumstances. You don't even need to say that; hinting at it would be more than enough. Have Zelda and Link both be protagonists (with us either getting a choice at the start a la Dishonored 2, or switch between them over the course of the story a la GTAV), taking on the big bad together. This would allow for both to be fully formed characters and to perhaps explore their relationship and individual characters more than we have in the past. Just have Zelda be the protagonist with no Link in sight - there are already periods in the lore where there is no Link, and there are games that barely reference Zelda, so this shouldn’t be an issue, right? Maybe have a new incarnation of Link be female instead - or potentially give us that choice at the start. Because… well, I don’t think you even have to provide a specific additional lore reason for that to work. If we go further on the ‘Link as an avatar’ route, maybe just have the player be able to select the pronouns they are referred by. I know that plenty of people would be happy with even just that. Maybe just have the protagonist be a new female character because … well, just because. Again, just call it ‘a quirk in the Triforce’ if you really feel that it needs to be explained through lore. Perhaps the big bad is killing or imprisoning all young Hylian boys as a precaution, and this causes a female character to take action - a show of courage that the Triforce of Courage then responds to. Heck, doesn’t even need to be a human / ‘Hylian’ character at that point - open it up to Zora and Nabooru and whatever else you feel fits. I could go on, but this post is getting pretty long and I should stop at some point. There are just so many cool and interesting things they could do with a female protagonist in this franchise. I wish more people would see it that way instead of dismissing it outright. I wish Aonuma would see it that way.

To be entirely clear, I don't take any issue with anything you (or ) said. I fully support / understand / agree with below - While I've personally mostly seen Link more as an avatar than a character, I can also fully understand not seeing it that way. That's fine. The point of that first part was more to provide an explanation as to why The Legend of Zelda is the primary subject of these types of discussions to those who seem to not understand that. I didn't intend to present that 'Link as an avatar' interpretation as the only valid interpretation. Apologies if it came off as such. Main point of the rest of the post was not that they need to handle it a specific way, but more that Nintendo's / Aonuma's comments on this have not been satisfactory in the slightest, and that they can and should do better, and that it is absolutely not hard at all for them to do better. Some of your / 's proposals I mentioned too, and they could even improve a bunch without even having a female player character if they just had Zelda do something different than just waiting for Link to save the day for once.

I think this is an excellent moment to bring up more of Dan Olson's work, specifically his (almost 20-minute long) video on GamerGate from his lovely puppet days. The first ~ 7 minutes aren't specifically about GamerGate, but raise a lot of interesting points about how no work is apolitical and how the text of a work can build a message or world that perhaps wasn't the direct intent of the creator. From the later half specifically about GamerGate, I find his summary of the ideas at the core of GamerGate to be incredibly relevant; I find it relevant because many people seem to base their views on that same core, including people who have posted here. That is not to accuse anyone of being a GamerGater - these core ideas were around long before GamerGate existed -, but to point out that I believe that these core ideas seem to be the source of why a lot of people are hostile or dismissive of these discussions of diversity and social issues. They just don't see the problem, see it as 'just the free market', and disruption of the existing market or criticism of the existing market is likened to censorship or 'forcing developers to do things'. This is in turn a fundamental misunderstanding of what the free market is. I think understanding these core ideas can help us better rebut the people who hold them.

I mean, the pointless sexualization of female characters still looks and feels entirely out of place to me. I don't see how it 'being a fantasy' or it containing a lot of fantastical elements in any way makes it 'less out of place'. I don't think this is a compelling argument at all, and I think the below video from Dan Olson / Folding Ideas is in some way relevant here (specifically about how 'they get to make the rules' doesn't protect those rules / decisions from criticism). It's under five minutes long so I'd encourage you to watch it.

My point was that the male armor was based on a real type of armor that existed, whereas the female version of it was just a metal bikini with zero basis in reality and zero visual design similarities to its male counterpart. I don't think the female armor being shaped that way would be an issue in the context of this one specific set of armor. So long as it doesn't pointlessly expose the midriff like below; I should also clarify that the discussion about this specific armor set started out with the claim that 'both (the male and female version) are unrealistic', which is why it is worth pointing out that the male design is in line with a type of armor that actually exists.

The visual design of male armor is generally in line with the type of protection it is expected to provide in the context of the game world. The visual design of female armor is generally not in line with the type of protection it is expected to provide in the context of the game world and often exaggeratedly accentuates the female form. Yes, the concept of 'armor' comes from the real world. How does that in any way make the above observations 'wrong' or 'unfair' or whatever you want to characterize them as? Your argument seems to be that the game says they provide the same protection, thus they provide the same protection, and we cannot say otherwise. It's like reacting to criticism of MGSV's Quiet by saying that she breathes through her skin and therefore can't wear clothes. You are simply using the game's own logic to support the game's own logic. See also the video linked above by .

Again, you are completely and utterly missing the point. It is irrelevant that the armor set provides the same armor statistic across gender in the game. That is not the point. You conveniently leave out this part of the post you keep going back to; The criticism is that the same armor set when worn by female characters sprout boob plates or otherwise change shape to exaggeratedly accentuate the female form. The criticism is that a lot of female armor is 'unrealistic' in the sense that there is a between their visual design and the actual protection they (would) provide whereas that disconnect is not present for most male armor. None of your claims negate any part of those criticisms.

Worth noting that this also applies to Quiet with her getting horribly burned and falling out of a window at the start of the game, leading to involuntary operations that infect her with a parasite which renders her unable to talk and apparently unable to wear clothes. Also things like introducing a girlfriend / wife / female ally character only to kill them off to provide the male character with a motivation (player character wife in Shadow of Mordor for example). I agree it would probably be better to make a separate thread for that.

Well, looks like I missed the explosions again. *very deep sigh* Quiet is not just 'sexy', she is overtly sexualized. The camera lingers on her chest and butt, even during scenes where that is utterly inappropriate. When she is in the helicopter she will do poses in the background. She is treated as a sex object. She doesn't even speak for a majority of the game. Sure, that's because of plot reasons, but it still contributes. People criticize the 'breathing through her skin' excuse because it is utterly ludicrous. Quiet could still be sexy if the camera didn't sexualize her. She could still be sexy if they removed the gratuitous posing during helicopter rides. She could still be sexy if she wore a proper damn outfit. She could still be sexy without the apparent romantic feelings towards the player character. None of those things were needed.

People have tried to explain institutionalized sexism to you more than once, and there is no lack of online resources and articles to find on the subject. You seem to ignore those and fall back on the same anecdotal evidence and feelings. It's an endless loop. It adds nothing to the discussion and only serves to detract from or diminish the issue being discussed. Oops, early post. I hope you at least take away something positive from the discussion, or at least gained some insights into why people are so passionate in discussing these issues, despite the perceived nastiness. These kinds of arguments based on market data simply loop into themselves. Videogames are marketed towards men, so more men buy videogames, so more men play videogames, so more videogames are made for men. It's entirely self-contained. The statistics simply show that the issue is there, not that videogames are inherently 'male' or 'for boys'. And I don't think anyone is saying games 'aimed towards men' should stop being made. I'll also quote my post from the thread about the specific stats you presented; The data does not show an actual gender split among Switch players.

But they are not one and the same. An idealized character is not inherently sexualized. There is nothing sexual about how Christian Bale Batman is portrayed. Wonder Woman is arguably an idealized character, but she is not overtly sexualized. Anyone may find either of them sexy for whatever reason, but they aren't portrayed as sexualized. Yes, characters can be both, but idealization does not inherently lead to sexualization. We all know that this is part of a larger problem. Discussing these issues is still important because it makes more people aware of them, which in turn may eventually reach those in power. I don't think they do it out of evil either. They do it because there is a perceived risk, but that risk is not one I see any basis in reality for. Horizon Zero Dawn has a female protagonist, and I see no evidence that that alone had any negative effect on the game's sales.

Talk about sexualization as a whole > people come in to say how you should talk only about the worst examples. Talk about only the worst examples > people come in to complain about how you are 'focusing only on the negative'. I know that that is not what you intend at all, but why not just let the discussion be about what it is about instead of arguing that it should be about something else or only a narrow aspect of the subject?
