Thread: Joe Abercrombie (fantasy author) AmA - talks about female characters, First Law sequel trilogy
I really enjoyed the first two books of The Shattered Sea. I need to get back to reading the third one! This needs to be repeated again and again: "The biggest issue with representation and writing good female characters in these genres is that they are so often regulated to token status. As he later says, there's no reason why male characters should be the default. (The same goes for other racial identities and sexual orientations.)

Totally valid opinion. That scene and the reprise of the song still give me goosebumps. The songs of Hunchback are absolutely amazing and top notch Disney songs and yet Alan Menken's score and chorus arrangements manage to outshine them. And then he somehow made this song even BETTER in the musical. I want to see this live so badly.

Maybe it's because we have no debt and no children, but if my partner and I made $200K combined in NYC I'd feel like we were living like kings. We're pretty comfortable already making less than half of that. We have a nice sized apartment with an extra bedroom in a good area. We are able to eat out regularly. We can buy games and other frivolous things whenever we want. The biggest issue is honestly health insurance and costs. Although I guess we would probably not be able to buy property any time soon.

1) Liking bodies beyond those of young women is now a fetish? Is the male nude body so taboo that it's now a fetish in a way that the female body isn't? 2) Nudity is not always about sexual attraction or titillation. And yet much of media treats it as if that's the primary way nudity can exist in stories. For example, traditionally "male" genres like sci-fi and fantasy have far more female nudity. Even in cases where it would make sense to showcase naked male bodies just as much as naked female ones. I guess people are just prudes about male nudity.

I'd expect them to show more naked men to also get money from people who like seeing that. Unless they think showing both naked women and men will hurt their bottom line. I'm close to finishing my first year of full-time work as a data analyst after graduating in statistics and sociology with a minor in computer science. Previously, I seriously considered going into a PhD as I enjoyed doing research at summer research experiences and independently during the school year. Now, I'm more enamored with the idea of doing a Master's and going into industry instead of academia. (Or more accurately, I'm not excited about going into academia at all.) I'm looking at statistics and data science programs (and a machine learning program). I chickened out of applying to ivy leagues and top schools for undergrad, and after spending summers doing research at a couple, I want to at least this time. But ultimately I don't know if getting a Master's will be a waste (in regards to time and money) and I still don't know exactly what I want to study. I know I have time, but it took me so long to finish undergrad that I still feel "behind" for my age. :(

Sorry for the late response. :( In our case, it wasn't so much that they were significantly more impressive than other candidates and so won out despite their distance. But we were having a hard time finding good candidates in general. Maybe if we had an influx of good candidates it might have been different. We hired multiple people in the same role during that round, and the one candidate who couldn't be interviewed in-person wasn't really spoken about or treated any differently than the others in the running. The one thing was that we asked if they would willing and able to relocate before the starting date. They were and so we just went on with the process like normal. It was about four hours of Skype interviews with different folks including a technical test. I should also note that we didn't offer any relocation benefits. I wasn't involved in the hiring of the other out of country candidate, but from what I've heard, it was similar to the above. As long as the person will relocate and start when we need them to, we don't tend to treat them any differently than other candidates.

I graduated later than my peers so I get it. But at the end of the day, you are getting a degree for yourself - either to enrich yourself intellectually, prepare to support yourself financially, etc. You aren't in competition with anyone else. As the years go by the fact that you took two years more than others in your age group will matter less and less if it ever even mattered at all.

There's a single Juan Valdez here and it's no where near where I live or work so I haven't been. :( Actually, there might also be one still at the international airport. Also, this reminds me that one of the board game cafes here randomly sells arepas. I asked for one once and the cashier couldn't understand what I was saying. He finally got from my description that I wanted an "a-rape-uh." Next time I go there, I sheepishly pronounce it like that only to be met with: "Oh, did you know it's pronounced [insert correct pronunciation here.]? :D" Smh.

Sure but at least I would get six months of stories with new situations, plots, themes, etc and ignore the next author's run if I don't like it. Instead of a retread of "Bruce can never grow beyond being an emotionally scarred and stunted eight year old." Yeah, I totally don't blame people for not wanting to financially support a game or series that sexualizes children even if you never have to see or use them. To be fair, a lot of genre writers in other media aren't very good at it either. And yeah, between unequal objectification and unintentional silliness, there's a lot that can go wrong. I think it helps to frame the concept around masculinities. Masculinity does not need to be (and isn't) inherently toxic, but the most common form of masculinity exposed by American (among others) society has many toxic elements. This is definitely a thing that happens. explained how hypocritical the phenomenon is in a much more eloquent way than I could a while back - so much so that I can't even paraphrase what she said. ;-;

Well, I did mention how stuff like (but not limited to) sexualized underage girls was gross and pulled me out of a niche series like Fire Emblem that really has nothing else quite like it mechanics wise. I don't understand the romance novel comparisons. You're comparing an entire medium (video games) to a genre (romance) in a medium (the novel) with far, far more diversity. Call me when the majority of the fiction you find in a library - not just one section - either doesn't include a representative sample of male protagonists/characters and hypersexualizes them when they do include them.

At the end of the day it feels like some men don't think enough of us are complaining, so those of us who do say something don't count. Honestly, it reminds me of conversations about how women wanting to get rid of catcalling are hurting women who feel appreciated/empowered/whatever from it. I have to wonder how many women have to talk about something before we're taken seriously. Or maybe we will never be unless we get formalized research results. (Which brings it's own set of issues.)

Count me as another woman who originally opened this thread, saw some of the responses, and just didn't want to put the effort in. Nowadays I just try to steer clear of new stuff that clearly thinks of my gender not as a potential audience but as an object for the consumption of straight men. It sucks because a lot of my favorite, older franchises have those issues to varying extents. Stuff like Fire Emblem is particularly disappointing because there is absolutely alternative. This hasn't been true historically. Look at classic Greek art for one example.
