Thread: Television Displays and Technology Thread: The ERA of OLED is Now

Mofo2 has the right answer. Use rtings. They straight up suggest to max brightness in a bright room, which works wonderfully for me, but their recommended brightness settings are great advice in general. I think on a per input basis you can then tweak from there; I like to use some of the filtering settings on the built in Netflix app for my kid's shows. I mean, if you have a history of extreme input lag sensitivity or are a semi pro fighting game player or love to play max speed Beatmania, look elsewhere. But for the games I've tried so far it's great? It's the loss of a frame @ 60 so for most players I think it's not even noticeable. My SNES Classic and Switch run fine. I'm possibly on the less sensitive side of the problem though.

Thread: NYT: NYC Subway built the city. Now at a projected $100 billion — the city must rebuild to survive.

The London/NYC comparison is interesting. Here in Singapore (a city-state/island, so somewhat comparable to Manhattan), the amount of total track is half, with 119 stations and buses covering the gaps. But ridership overall is very close, coming in at about 1 billion/year rough average. I'd say SG is extremely advanced compared to NYC in that it's mostly automated with a card-based system and extremely cheap fares (you pay by distance using fare-debit cards, not by arbitrary zone). But Singapore has substantial advantages in government infrastructure and spending to build, because the population depends on it. Cars are actively discouraged. Montreal is an interesting comparison as it's clearly in much better health than the NYC system, but shares similar problems in terms of infrastructure fatigue. The new trains are nice but the cost and stations are definitely suffering. The Pink Line proposal is interesting but I'm not sure any government would survive the debt taken on to build it. No, because the available land doesn't exist for the most part - the Government would have to begin a repurchasing program. NYC is one of the world's most expensive cities, and then you have to factor in the issue of weather. Digging underground is costly and would shut down parts of the transit system, but it is relatively protected from the problems above.

I took it the other way. Lucca wasn’t sure about moving to Washington. When she saw her friends car, it was basically saying “stay”. This season was never about her love life - it was about having a kid and where does she want to be? (I do wonder if next season becomes the Lucca show, now that we’ve had Diane and Maia seasons.)

Did anybody ever run into a PPC+++? I never saw one of those, and only one heat exchanger. One of my friends at work also has two gauss for some reason; likely a bug of some kind... King Crab was definitely an exciting find for me, too, although functionally I find the Atlas to be a much better choice. The 'Crab is just too limited on slots and too fragile in that I can't really find a good alternative to a stock config. I admit it's still fun to just run up the middle and see if you can break some legs, but you tend to need a stock of AC/20++ and +++ to keep it functional.

Honestly rendering is not the problem. It’s data and Unity. Which means CPU. It can be butter smooth and then stall like crazy on my 970. Second to last story map just had huge stalls everywhere, like it needed 8GB just to load and the CPU needed another 2GHz to breathe. Absolutely still enjoying it though. Every time you get that next 10 ton up mech it feels like your strategy is totally revitalized. Had flashbacks to the original Mechwarrior when I ran into that Battlemaster.

Interesting to see all of the balance discussion here. I've had a pretty good time rolling a lance with two AC/20 mechs (hey, I'm midgame, Orion is the biggest mech I've got!) and a Trebuchet to fire missiles. Honestly have found the AC/20 super useful because the game loves to randomly throw in 65-75 ton mechs and the AC/20 (well, especially the AC/20+) is good for killing an arm in one round (usually have a few helper M/Lasers...) Have actually instakilled two Thunderbolts because the AC/20 did lethal pilot damage. I would agree on LRM though, honestly their hit rate is just ridiculously high. Even at 50% may as well fire. I think the best way to approach LRM/SRM balance is strictly accuracy countermeasures; either general mech ECM is better and the accuracy rate is lower, or cover becomes a lot more effective. Hunchback was incredible through the medium/heavy days, though. 9 M/L + Multi-targeting is great for wiping the field and once you start handing over M/Laser+ or ++ things get spicy. (Although, I have an AC/20+++ now?)

Lots of weird lag even on my 3 year old rig. Sometimes when you are sprinting and the game needs to load in a new section of the map it just straight up freezes for 3 seconds to load without any kind of indicator, and then suddenly it's fine again...sad to say but Unity is just a bit of a hog. I can't drop my AC20 because AC20+++ = 120 damage, +20 stab...so nice

A really great finale to this chapter of Dishonored. Honestly, it's just a few levels short of being a full 60 dollar release anyway, and getting rid of the Mana bar was a huge breath of fresh air for the game mechanics. (Even the way they got rid of mana in the game fiction is good). Fastest way to troubleshoot: 1. : press volume up (and release), press volume down (and release), then hold the side button. ...if that doesn't help... 2. Backup to iCloud 3. Erase all Content and Settings (this will wipe your phone to factory default) 4. Restore from iCloud upon restart ...if that doesn't help... 5. Erase again, but this time don't restore. That's the Apple Store script. It sounds crazy but wiping your phone fixes a surprising number of issues. They pretty much will make you go through these steps before doing a repair or replace.

Yep, as GS says do a factory reset 1. Erase all contents and settings 2. Restore from icloud 3. If that doesn't work, then erase all again and try fresh Those problems shouldn't happen (and don't on mine) but 99% of the time weird iOS issues are because the OS install is broken, which unlike windows tends to be completely silent when it's happening. Any genius bar will force you to go through those steps before issuing a replacement. EDIT: I should say that on past phones, I've had surefire "sounds like hardware problems", like the touch screen failing and the battery dying at 45%. They could reoccur at random, frustrating as hell. As difficult as it is to hear, most of the time this is iOS silently being screwed up. You don't see the fail messages because those occur in system logs only accessible by using a terminal application; there's no popup. Sometimes nothing on system either. It's worth a shot before heading to an Apple Store or outright replacing your phone.

More glass, more screen, aluminum construction. OLED or not, if your whole front face is a screen, by definition weight is going to go up. This is why the iPhone SE is around ~114g. The glass is both for aesthetics (see: iPhone 4) but also to support Qi charging, which will work through cases up to a certain thickness. Certainly they could drop a fair amount of frame weight by switching to plastic, but then the build quality of the unit would feel (if not be) noticeably worse.

Screen is definitely smaller; think of it as a very long 7. But that length is perfect because it just makes portrait mode even better. Websites, email, the stuff you do 90% of the time, feels better, because the screen space dedicated is maxed out. In a text-layout situation like resetera or most other websites, the amount of content you can read feels the same as a plus because it stretches that much farther. Videos look fine to me - the superb OLED screen quality certainly helps - but I admit that I prefer to zoom in, just looks more impressive to cut off some of the image by the screen and notch rather than leave it blank and hold the phone that much closer to your face. The three best demo apps for screen quality I've seen are Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, GNOG, and, of course, just the live wallpapers section in IOS. AC in particular looks unbelievable.

Almost there? I sincerely doubt it. Current LG prototype Transparent OLED displays are lower resolution and around 60% light transmittance, which is the big problem - how are you going to capture competitive camera images? With an array of cameras in the "notch" there's just too much dependance on emittance and transmittance of light. There's also the earpiece to consider. Apple has the money and R&D to figure out something, eventually, but I really doubt it's within the next 5 years. For now, the API handling is just smart consideration that maybe the "notch" has a different width in the future, or gets moved to a forehead (Galaxy-style). And since Apple isn't building the display themselves...they might be stuck waiting for Samsung or LG to come up with the right idea first. None that I've heard of...:/

So, classic early iPhone purchase scenario, but I already paid for it? Love the phone so far though. Face ID nearly flawless for me and the ease of use it offers for some apps is amazing. Defenses are meant to burn resources hard, because each wave kills the placed defenses and you end up using guns a lot. Basic Tips: 1. Upgrade your armor to add ammo storage, should be an option on any blue. Assault Rifle in the primary slot is popular because you can go rifle + Bow. 2. Complete edge defense of FOB is too expensive. Can probably shrink it a bit and try to funnel enemies instead. At each of the cardinal directions I recommend having an "opening" in the fence and then use ramps so the enemies walk up and then fall off at the other side - this makes it easy because they take quite a while to stand up. 3. Use grenades to kill mortar enemies, it's either that or burn ammo. 4. Usually you want to go into a defense with some objects on your item equips, like metal fence or barbed wire. Use them to block a few paths to buy time while you guard the rest, or to patch up if you're doing FOB defense. 5. If you feel you're lacking the right gear, go container hunting...there are usually better weapons and base defense recipes to find.

I have no problem sneaking up on mortars, it's really just a matter of (1) making sure I'm not overloaded and (2) crouch-walking slowly enough? The real revelation for me is that you can defuse bombers that way... Anyway, miracle of miracles I found a fourth color drop of the M1000 (campaign still not complete, LV34) but wow, the material cost is through the roof. Adding one perk costs 600,000+KP! Upgrades cost a huge amount of parts (including some I've never seen before). The material cost curve from 3-4 is really eye-opening.

If you know you have fences, the spear is great. But the bow's risk value is so low it was by far my #1 weapon across the entire game. You can 2-3 shot most enemies without being in danger, whereas without the fence, the spear is still mainly a risky melee weapon. Very early in the game the spear still wins out because you're extremely ammo limited, but once you have a pouch or two, your ammo count skyrockets and the ammo types kick in before you get something similar on melee, as well.

Society Game is basically Survivor, so if you like that, you’ll like SG. The second season adds some powerful Genius alumni, and some of the challenges become a bit Genius-esque, but ultimately the show is about mixing power with thinking, whereas Genius is all mental+social. Crime Scene is brilliant, but obviously has very little to do with Genius except the casting. Jims is right; it’s honestly shocking it hasn’t been adapted in the US. It would honestly be the perfect format to take a few high level celebrities and make a great “variety” show out of. Netflix could do it, even.

Erase All & Start Fresh Obviously if the digitizer is broken then #1 shouldn’t have an effect and #2 is impossible. But since I’ve seen touchscreens fail due to software, make sure you’ve tried #2. Beyond that you’re looking at a full screen replacement, because the digitizer and panel are all one piece. You can shop for independent repair but the screen cost is pretty locked down so not sure if any savings to be found there. If you want a new unit that’s a great down payment though, so just weigh if you want a fix or a new unit. Apple sells discount refurbs too.

There is just not enough manufacturing supply at a reasonable fail rate for OLED to work as a laptop or Tablet standard. Every laptop that has shipped with OLED to date on the PC side has basically just been limited edition or BTO, and in many cases they are no longer sold. Simply put there is too much demand for phones so why push that demand to devices that sell a lot less and have a much lower margin? If we see some new major players in the OLED space then I would expect things to change.

Z9D is a LED display. Samsung's QLED is named because they use a quantum dot painting technology to improve backlight output. It sounds like the longterm plan for Samsung is to apply this to OLED (so, QOLED). In principle QLED should always be brighter than LED but of course it also depends on the screen array, backlight quality and array, etc. All modern LCD displays are LED - in the past, LCDs used a lamp backlight system (such as fluorescent) as opposed to LED lights. OLED skips the idea of a backlight entirely because the subpixels themselves are light-emitting.

I'm glad that helped! What I meant by RGB options was on the console, where you can set full or limited. Maybe the TV can too? Some TVs you have to set things manually, because for whatever reason their auto mode doesn't work right. When the settings are wrong things get really washed out, or color clipped. There was a about this in november. I saw on a quick google search, not sure if that helps and it's obviously a really temporary hack though. Good luck.

T- HDMI "thing" is likely because Sony has always paired a specific chipset (Mediatek) with the X1 Extreme processor. The A8F uses a newer revision X1 that seems to solve this problem, but it's an issue also for the A1 (OLED) and X900e. I won't lie, it's a bizarre catch to have when LG and Samsung just go full bandwidth on everything, but my X900F was also dramatically cheaper than the LG OLEDs and Samsung Q series, so I can't really argue too hard. For the non full bandwidth inputs, I read somewhere that you can still run HDR, but only 4k30, so probably would be reduced color depth HDR? So it's pretty comprehensive for HDMI 1.4 devices (of which there are a lot) or 1080p devices like Nintendo Switch, PS3, Wii U, vast majority of laptops, etc. If you definitely have 3+ full bandwidth devices (UHD HDR Blu Ray, Xbox 1 X, Apple TV 4K) the mitigation plan would be: a. Soundbar with HDMI 2b port switching b. Receiver with HDMI 2b port switching (if you have a HT setup) c. Monoprice 50 dollar 2b switch. (Another step for your devices, but not awful) None of them are ideal solutions but there you go, if you're in that boat already. - I don't understand how you can call the X900F bulky but honestly, wall mounting is the best. Certainly if you want "non bulky" you should get the Q7 or Q9 with the breakout box, because everything else on the market is about the same size. - The Android build is slow, for sure. But it's not like running 3.0 or something. 99% of the time you use the TV to watch stuff, not browse the menus. And where it's actually really great is you get access to Google Play. Want VLC, Kodi, etc? Well you don't have to rely on the TV manufacturer for any of it. Don't get me wrong - I would have bought the C7 or C8 if they were in my price range, but...the X900F perks are pretty good.

So...the SEK3500 is a breakout box replacement kit for Samsung TVs, and it supposedly gives HDMI 2 + HDR? I can't find exact specs on it. Well, if you want HDR you need to make sure the cable going from your console to the box is HDMI 2.0 18Gbps ready. Beyond that this looks like it might be an RGB limited/full issue? Have you tried tweaking that? Yeah, sure, use HDMI 3 to your receiver as that will give you ARC and then connect your devices to the receiver, provided that receiver supports HDR and 18Gbps HDMI (HDMI 2.0a or b). The manual is really easy to find, but it's called "". Make sure both your receiver and the input port on the TV setting are both to "Enhanced HDMI" which is what you need for the full 18Gbps bandwidth. As mentioned the X900F saves HDR and non HDR per input separately. So you can tune SDR and HDR each. RTINGS suggests setting brightness based on your room lighting - more room lighting, more brightness.

Anyway, any modern OLED or LCD will be ridicuously thin and minimal bezel. Get a pro wall mount install and your TV will be rock solid. Even decent Wall mounts are built for double the weight of a lot of TVs these days, so as long as it’s installed properly on the wall you’ll be fine. Haven't tried the passthrough yet. I know there is a soundbar menu setting that enables HDMI 2 full bandwidth (needed for HDR) and that I see separate listings on my TV for the soundbar menu and the HDMI slot, so in theory that part is covered. I imagine TV volume is still controllable using ARC, but something I need to try first... Check the RTINGS settings page. Brightness should be set according to your room lighting. In my bright living room I do use max brightness as it doesn't crush details, but even the 65 brightness setting looks good. Honestly though little to change out of the box except to make sure your console inputs are set to Game Mode picture setting, and if you have both PS4P and X1X, they should be using HDMI 2 and HDMI 3 since those are the high bandwidth ports.

(X900F) Accessing the Picture Adjustment menu takes a variable amount of time based on what you're doing with the TV. If I just switched to 4K HDR, I timed it to 3 seconds, but then its loaded and smooth. If I accessed the menu system recently, it loads almost instantly. Using the Action menu seems to speed things up too? If I just turned the TV on, and haven't accessed the TV menu, then yeah, I'm guessing it takes awhile to load settings. The Sony Sets backload everything so you can launch the TV and change inputs almost instantly, but then you need to wait on the other bits. Compared to the 2014 models it's perfectly smooth. But yeah maybe compared to LG it's bad? I don't need to change settings everyday, so don't notice it much

I bought the HT-X9000F a few weeks ago. It's the most impressive soundbar I've ever used, but whether you should buy it or not depends on your situation. I basically just use it with my PS4 Pro, OTA Digital HDTV and then Netflix/Kodi/Youtube/VLC through my TV. Positives - Sound capacity is really impressive - even at default it's just a lot better than a traditional, cheaper bar like the CT-290 or whatever. - Near perfect ARC/HDMI-CEC with Sony TVs. Boots up fast, syncs fast. - Not cheap but still cheaper than the Z9F - Boomy wireless sub - Obviously fits perfectly under the X900F, since that's what it was designed for Worth Noting - If you end up not hearing the difference between Atmos and Stereo, it can link to your TV through bluetooth. (Sony TVs can, dunno about LG). I haven't tried this at home but the IT show demo unit I played around with worked identical to ARC. Turning the TV on also turned on the soundbar, TV remote controlled the volume, etc. - HDMI 2 passthrough. So if you want something with 100% access to the soundbar and can't lose the HDMI input on your TV, this does the job. On my Sony TV the passthrough device shows up on the input list, which is cool. YMMV on other sets. Drawbacks - 2.1 unit only. If you want a center channel go for the Z9F. Personally if I really need enhanced voice clarity I just press the VOICE button on the remote, but ultimately more speakers is better. I would say the drawback on a center channel with soundbars is ultimately that they are all so squished together. I guess it adds some clarity but I used to own one of those 20+ channel Yamaha monsters and this sounds worlds better. - I believe you also need the Z9F to go with the optional surround back speaker pair (which are an additional cost, by the way, listed as $200 on Sony's website, dunno about Amazon) - I wish I could say ARC is bulletproof but I did lose it once. Ended up just unplugging the TV and soundbar from the wall for 30 seconds and then everything behaved after. Not sure if it was the bar or TV, but power pull did the trick. - Last thing on the "you should buy the Z9F list" is that the Z9F supports 3x HDMI, while this supports only one* (1 port is ARC in, the other is for the passthrough device, Z9F is 1 ARC + 3 out). Again, not a big deal for me because I don't want to attach 3 more HDMI devices and juggle two remotes to do all of the input switching. But in theory it's there.

Well the sub booms and the sound feels very rich to me by default. I mean it feels room filling to me and my volume is only at 40. Some surround is there because that’s just how virtual stereo works with your ears, but it’s rarely going to be as abrupt as a rear channel pouring directly into your ear. The V Surround is pretty good but probably depends on your room a bit.

Well, as a new X900F owner I can tell you the relative perks and problems of that. - Really superb HDR max brightness, SDR brightness is not best in class, but it's top 10. It's really good. - Local dimming works fine. - Per input settings, 4K latency is great - Google Play Support: Sure, there is youtube and Netflix there by default, but want VLC, Kodi, etc? Go for it. They work great, and there's an ethernet port if you don't want to WiFi it. - Patched to support Dolby Vision now, I think? - Really pairs well with the X9000F soundbar, if you like that. (Interestingly you can HDMI CEC pair with bluetooth speakers!) Compromises: - I'm told UI is rather slow, though looking at RTINGS basically it's LG and then everyone else. It's miles faster than my 2014 Sony was at launch, I guess. - 40ms latency on 1080p, though that's a bit more than 1 frame at 60hz, so nothing noticeable to me. - Only HDMI ports 2 and 3 are full bandwidth, and one of those is ARC. This is weird, though in practice not a big deal because I don't have 3+ 4:4:4 devices. Ultimately, if you can get a significant discount on the Q7FN or Q8FN, those are probably the direction you should go, because I don't think there is a thousand dollar price difference to be found in quality or features. But as Sony TVs go - and for me this was almost 50% cheaper than the OLED models - modern ARC support is nearly perfect, Google Play saved me from using external boxes and the PS4 Pro experience has been fantastic. Hell, there's a Netflix button right on the remote - usually, we ignore that stuff, but for my family it's very useful.

I just don't think there's a substantial advantage. Maybe you like the Sony X900F the most, but I can tell you right now I don't notice, say, $500 vs the X900E. Or the Q7FN. Now, if price is the same, I think your priority is really "what is the most comfortable for me to use" or "what makes my viewing experience easier?" What I love about the X900F in this regard: - Can switch inputs immediately when the screen turns on. Don't have to wait for the full bootup process. - X9000F soundbar using HDMI CEC + Arc smoothly turns on at the same time, no lag on waiting to change the volume. - Super easy to install Google Play apps. Had VLC and Kodi running in minutes, pretty much unplugged my Mac Mini on the spot because now my family can access those apps using only the TV's own remote control (which also controls soundbar volume thanks to ARC). - Big white Netflix button on the remote lets you skip all menu stuff and jump straight to that. - Supports bluetooth keyboard + mouse. I literally just turned them on, sync worked without diving deep into menus. Rarely need to use them but some apps, like Kodi, do have some weird menus where I'm not sure if a button on the TV remote will right click or just straight up exit. So it's there if you want it. - Per input picture settings and a clearly labelled game mode. Just had to set my PS4Pro input to Game Mode, max the brightness, and that's basically it. Follow RTINGS for more detail, of course, but I didn't have to relabel each input to get special settings. (That being said, you can write custom labels per input, which is useful to tell somebody what HDMI to switch to) - No ads. Apparently the Samsungs have those built into the UI? - Minor point, but none of the inputs are recessed. In some setups it's just a lot harder to plug things in when there is no clear route "out". I see the Q7 (not the Q8?) has the breakout box though, which to me is the best possible solution. Samsung basically has the only "wall portrait" TV because the breakout box allows the TV itself to be completely flat.

I have the 900F, which is fairly similar to those in 1080p60 lag (40.8) and even going from an 800b (with sub 20) it's unnoticeable to me. 40 is a bit more than 2 frames at 60fps, right? So that means basically 1 frame versus most faster competing solutions. But then I don't notice an obvious off-axis brightness issue either in my (admittedly bright) living room. That's how tropical locations work, I guess. As always you may have personal sensitivity that is greater, especially if you spend a lot of time with Street Fighter or rhythm game input timing. But in games like Horizon, Odyssey, Xenoblade, etc. it's been completely fine for me.

I would have loved to go OLED but the 50-60% additional cost here wasn't worth it. X900F brightness and HDR are pretty amazing so I'm happy with it. Honestly more surprised with the HT-X9000F sound bar though, huge difference in usability and just sheer soundstage versus the cheap Sony model I went with before.

As I said, I don't have an Apple TV. On any iOS device the switch penalty is true. On TvOS, I stand corrected - . In which case you still need to make one account per region and still need to setup payment on each, but then as they're both active you can switch without penalty. The trick is to remember which one you have active though as the store will only reflect the active user. Anyway, it's good to know. The iTunes world is mostly useless in this part of the world but having multiregion access is a compelling case to buy Apple TV again.

I don't have an Apple TV, but this is really an iTunes question, and the answer is that you can't switch regions. Instead, you have to make a separate account per region, login to that account, and then (for paid content) either use itunes cash cards or a CC from that region to pay for it. (Sometimes PayPal can be used). There is no way to merge accounts, and converting an account from one region to another is a problematic, one way move where it permanently erases ownership of anything that can't carry over. Switching iTunes accounts does not affect your iCloud login or App Store login - it strictly affects iTunes - but there is another limitation: when you login to a new account it locks you out of switching back and downloading owned content for a certain number of days (Varies per region). In the case of Canada/US my experience was that if I switched to my US account I could switch back but couldn't redownload anything I owned for 30 days.

Finally got the X900F (or XF900 depending on your region) and soundbar (the similarly named HT-X9000F) last night. Just barely did setup, so not much in the way of picture impressions, but: - Compared to older thin TVs like the W800B/C which mount bottom-justified, the mounting holes for this are basically dead center. It was easy to mount though - just remove the 4 screws and go from there - you won't need a spacer because the back is flat. - FWIW the soundbar still mounts the same on the wall as the CT-280, but maybe a half cm wider. Luckily the hanging holes are big enough that it just fit, anyway. I may end up getting a contractor to set new holes though, as the lower hanging TV means there isn't much of a gap between the two. - Bezel on the X900F is clearly thinner than the B series, although not that it matters much, a tiny bit less trim at 55" is negligible. It's small. - Awesome to finally have a local digital tuner. Probably the first time in 10 years where the channel buttons actually have become useful again. - The soundbar is supposed to be easy to setup, but struggled for an hour until I finally did a factory reset of the soundbar. Now Bravia Sync is fine and everything is happy. - There is an enhanced HDMI mode if you want to do a full passthrough on the soundbar, which is a good idea because only HDMI 2 and 3 (ARC) support 18Gbps bandwidth. - Interestingly, Sony actually promotes the use of Bluetooth as an alternative to ARC. Both the TV and soundbar must support A2DP (which these do) so if you want to free up HDMI3 this is a legit way to do it. The quality level seems pretty high but I don't have the tools to compare it to HDMI ARC, which is also making use of compressed datastreams to support Dolby Atmos/DTS-X. Considering a soundbar is hardly a 7.1 Klipsch rig they may end up nearly identical. Either way, you get full Bravia Sync which means TV remote control and synchronous on/off. - The soundbar is actively cooled. I can't hear it without my ear pressed to the back, but I guess that's why the manual says not to shove it in a cabinet. I'll try "VERTICAL S." and of course a bunch of 4K content this week.

Agreed, but I would say that HDMI 2.1 is not going to arrive next year in perfect condition. Expect incomplete implementation (this feature works, but that feature has bugs, or the inevitable "Samsung changed something in the spec for reasons", only some ports on some TVs supporting it, and straight up "this would be great but the panel itself can't use it". And with the exception of eARC, you need new cables. Actually you need new cables for that too unless you have HDMI cables with an ethernet channel already. Long story short, I think we have probably 3 product cycles before the problems sort themselves out. By then we should be talking about things like PlayStation 5. RTINGS writes a pretty on DV that basically says it's useless right now, unless you have the best of sets, and HDR10 will support some of the same things later anyway. I think it's not a given that Sony will support DV, but also that I don't think UHD is a given either. We'll see, but generally speaking developers just don't have the gear to do DV work. As I mentioned after replying to you, I just bought the XF900 (X9000F here) so I feel fairly comfortable upgrading now and letting the TV market sort itself out with new technology in the meantime. The viewing angle thing is not that big of a deal to me (sure, you lose brightness on an angle, but it's not like TN where the colors reverse) and it's a really great looking LED set. I think if you need one right now the XE900 is probably a great deal too, in that it should seem like a big upgrade for you. I guess it just depends how badly you need one now versus next year.

Go 55" if you can. The screen size jump to 55 is the single biggest improvement you will see since all content is not 4K. It does sound like OLED solves all of your problems, so if you're okay with the panel lottery and some image retention now and then, it's not a bad idea. But if you want to go full trouble free, then LED is the only game in town. LG makes IPS displays where angle is not a problem, but I can see they're not your favorite company right now. I don't think DV is a dealbreaker, but if you're big on UHD Blu Ray, maybe down the line? But I don't think of these sales as now or never. After World Cup will be Back to School, or Black Friday, or Pre Christmas, or Boxing Day - every country has a variety of them throughout the year. I can't speak to the price because I can't really comprehend the currency. For example here in SG, TVs are just...arbitrarily a lot more expensive. The XF900 is $1000 cheaper in Canada and yet we have roughly equal currencies, which means there are retail controls that really change the market. Certainly something like the QF7 would be interesting, or the LG SK9000 in a big bright room, or the B7 if you are okay with trying OLED, but it REALLY depends on your particular market. Price parity on the B7 to the XF is pretty impressive. I would have bought that on the spot here, but my family living room is far smaller than yours. Honestly speaking, if you're set on something now, the B7 is going to give you the best value by far. If you buy the XE90 and then go back to the store, the B7 is still going to seem like an improvement, and that's saying something. But I will say if you're not at 55" yet any set at that level will seem like an improvement.

Generally LG uses IPS, so the last few years their LCDs have been go-to for big rooms where viewing angle is key. Brightness suffers as a result, though, so they are typically behind Sony and Samsung for general use.

Yeah. At a glance that would be a strong argument for the Q7F, considering the amount of SDR and non 4K content out there. Thanks. Ended up bargaining a bit and....inexplicably Samsung wants a solid 600-800 more at the 55” level. There was some kind of 3 year warranty, but it's been on the floor for probably at least six months? The built in front firing speaker was honestly pretty compelling, but I don't think I would throw more than 2 grand at a used product. I will say though, I was pretty impressed how the salesman immediately pointed me at the C8 and loaded RTINGS right on it, unprompted :lol Yeah, in Singapore generally you can't find TCL/Vizio, and the dollar to dollar is about 1.5x more but some things like TVs are just more, period. Best "advertised" price on the 9000F here is $3000, but at a local shop I can probably negotiate down some. C7 and C8 are both $4200+. At that amount it's almost bridging the gap to the Sony OLEDs... I really am enamored with how good OLED looks on the C7 and A1, but I don't have a dark room for it and there's definitely the kids/netflix factor. I did the whole Plasma thing back in the PS3 era (Pana TH42) but I think sitting out the image persistence might be a good idea for next time somebody leaves the TV on or paused for a few hours. And I'm wall-limited to 55" so that rules out some of the crazy stuff anyway.
