We'll see! I think they still need to be wary as they have real competition this time. Microsoft is hungry and I feel like they're going to come out swinging this time with everything they have. Sony can't afford to get complacent again. Nintendo is also doing extremely well at the moment. So we'll see. Can they deliver another PS4 and keep the momentum going? I'm certainly curious to find out.

I’ll own all platforms regardless and don’t usually play multiplayer games anyways so it’s not a big deal for me. However, they should be cautious not to fall back into arrogant Sony mode. What happened with Xbox One and Microsoft could happen to PlayStation again.

Thread: Is Driveclub worth getting in 2018?

See, now this is an interesting post to discuss. I think, at the core, they are indeed both racing games but the structure has a dramatic impact on the experience. Track based racing is designed around specific events that you select from a menu - you spend time playing and mastering these events. Typically, each challenge feels fairly well crafted (when done right) and offers a specific challenge. This is what I love about games like Ridge Racer, PGR, Sega Rally and the like. It's very focused and designed around mastery. Open world racing games, however, drop you into a large map with things scattered about. The game's are typically designed around exploration and just driving. You spent a LOT of time driving between areas. If you want to focus on track racing, there is an additional layer to deal with. When done right, such as in Forza Horizon 3, it can be engaging as the world itself is interesting enough to support it. I think there is a large difference between the two, however, as you really cannot get the same experience in each. The open world aspects make it very difficult for those just looking to run and master races and tracks. At the same time, those that want to explore a world naturally won't find that in a track racer.

Pissy out of nowhere? You're original post was kind of that. You dropped into the thread, brought up an unrelated game on a different platform and insulted the game in question. What's the purpose? THAT is truly out of nowhere and really doesn't add anything to the discussion. I don't think you can objectively claim one is superior to the other either since they aren't really comparable outside of the fact that they both feature cars.

I disagree. Horizon is awesome but very VERY different. It's an open world style game. Driveclub is focused on crafted tracks instead. For me, DC is still one of the best racing games of the last decade just in terms of the overall experience. The sense of speed, excellent handling, Hybrid soundtrack and beautiful visuals all work together to create something very memorable. If only there were a 60fps version of the game out there. Horizon is great too but the open world aspect can be tedious sometimes when I'm just looking to master a track and race.

Thread: The initial reaction to Silent Hill 2

I dunno, I was around on GAF at the time and I seem to recall a positive reaction overall. Silent Hill 2 and ICO were released on the same day and I bought them both at the time. Spent the afternoon playing ICO then the evening playing Silent Hill 2. It absolutely blew me away. That first run through Silent Hill 2 is one of the most memorable gaming moments in my personal history. I'm not sure anything could ever recapture that feeling - of that specific time and place. It was perfect. Silent Hill 2 also released at a perfect time for me personally - I had only just discovered horror games in the past year. I mean, Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark I had played but I never found them terrifying. It started for me with the original Thief in late 98 - some of the stages I found terrifying. Thief 2 as well. Then System Shock 2 which left a huge impression on me. ...after that, a friend recommended Silent Hill 1 and I loved it. Silent Hill 2 became one of my most anticipated titles as a result and, well, the rest is history. I also loved part 3 in its own way. It was different but still a great Silent Hill experience.

Thread: Would the N64 be remembered for half it was if Rare did not exist?

EAD did produce amazing games for N64 but...it's a small library. Very small. I think Rare was extremely important to the system's success and lasting legacy. EAD is on top but I feel that Rare is just behind. Honestly, that's just not true. It's not even about "console wars", rather, the quantity of great games that stand the test of time. History has proven Saturn to be a great machine. I will agree that the North American and European lineups are not spectacular (they're good, but not great) but if you look at the library as a whole including Japanese games...the Saturn is packed with classics. If you think Saturn is a piece of junk, you're simply missing out. All three systems from that era have plenty of great games worth exploring but I think a lot of folks have missed out on Saturn's best.

I agree 100%. The Vita never came close to matching the PSP in terms of pushing beyond expectations. There were some impressive games on there but it wasn't as cutting edge a machine as PSP in its day. Not even close. Again - you need to think about the origins of the game on consoles of that era. Borderlands 2 is often a sub-30fps game on PS3 and 360. Wolfenstein 2 is a mostly 60fps game on PS4 and Xbox One. Borderlands 2 on Vita is how I'd imagine more ambitious games of the PS4/XO generation would wind up on Switch. A PS4 game that's barely hitting 30fps isn't going to translate well as it suggests a lot of overhead to deal with. Wolf 2 is just a really well optimized game.

Yeah, this argument that "it's cel-shaded thus not imrpessive" is really silly. Should we say that same of Breath of the Wild? Of course not. Borderlands 2 was definitely a somewhat demanding game for its time with some of the largest maps I can recall in a UE3 shooter. There are some huge areas there and lots of action on-screen. Just for my own curiosity, how old are you? I'm just wondering if you were around for the PSP launch or not. I feel like that would absolutely distort one's view of it. I'm 36, for the record.

This is pretty silly. The PSP (especially) and the Vita absolutely fell into the same category as Switch at the time of release. Switch is a more versatile system due to its focus on docked/handheld (something you can do with PSP...but not at launch). Were you around during the launch of PSP? It was absolutely amazing at the time and set a new standard in what you can expect from a handheld system. Many of its early games still look remarkable to this day. That said, things were different during this time. The PSP received PS2 class ports and the types of games we're seeing on Switch today (like Wolf 2 and Skyrim) weren't really ON consoles back then. Thus, the PSP library is more focused on racing, arcade and other such titles...but all of them were a huge step up from any other portable experience of that era. These ports aren't anywhere near the best looking games on PSP either but I think they DO hold up nicely (though, for a couple of them, overclocking is admittedly required for optimal performance). I'd argue that something like Tekken 5 on PSP is as impressive for the time period - it came out in exactly the same time frame as Wolf 2. You gotta remember this is the PS2 era - seeing a high-quality 60fps 3D fighting game on a portable system was as insane back then as seeing Wolf on Switch is today. Ridge Racers in 2004, which is an original game, is still more impressive to me than just about any other portable game in history keeping mind its release date and what it was doing.

I consider Dreamcast part of that generation and having Dreamcast ports on a mobile device at that point was really impressive. It's not something we had ever seen before. That's why PSP was so impressive. There hadn't been anything like that before. Not even remotely close. Switch feels like a continuation of what Sony started in 2004 but done even better. Were you around during that era? Again, I'm not sure you're remembering just how insane it was to see 2D fighters like that on a portable. That's my point. Too many people here lack the proper perspective to understand this. It looks silly by today's standards but that's not what we're talking about. It needs to be considered in its original release window. I'm not sure why this needs to be a battle - it seems that some folks balk at the idea of PSP impressing to the same degree as Switch but it absolutely did and then some. They're both very comparable system in their time but the Switch is simply better executed. There were already console style games in the mobile space when Switch launched, however (even if they weren't nearly as impressive) while no such thing existed when PSP launched. This is key.

Thread: Digital Foundry: Wolfenstein II on Switch

Eh, I think the issue is that PSP often just received brand new games based on franchises that originated on PS2 (or earlier) and that was often the most impressive. Midnight Club 3 is pretty nuts, though, as it's a massive open world driving game on PSP with motion blur and reflections intact. Outrun 2, while not perfect, is kind of amazing in that it originated on Xbox arcade hardware - they even found a way to simulate the reflections and specular highlights. The two GTA games are interesting as well - they are new games but also basically ports in that they feature the same city maps and visual design as the PS2 games. It's simply a collection of new missions and a new story. Having an open world game less than a year after PSP launched was impressive as well. The AAA console space was *VERY* different during that era, however. There were console shooters but, aside from a few like Halo, most weren't that impressive especially compared to what we were starting to see on the PC. It's not really a comparable time period. The PSP launched in 2004 - that was the year that Far Cry, Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 all shipped. The Xbox ports of those games, which was the most powerful console at the time, are similar in quality to the Switch port of Wolfenstein 2. That's how far ahead the PC was during that period. There simply wasn't a chance in hell that you could pull that off on a mobile device like PSP. It wasn't time yet. That kind of undermines your arguments as it suggests that you're judging things by eye rather than actually trying to understand what's going on below the surface. Borderlands 2 is a large scale Unreal Engine 3 based first person shooter. On consoles of its day, Borderlands 2 struggles to maintain 30fps (Xbox 360 and PS3). That's what they were porting to Vita. In comparison, Wolf 2 is a 60fps game on consoles of its day...just something to think about. That port of Borderlands 2 is really bad, though. I'd say something like NFS Hot Pursuit is more inline - it took a huge hit to visuals but it offers the same gameplay as the console titles. It's one the most technically ambitious racing games of the last generation - to the point where Criterion had to push beyond the regular 360 libraries. It's using low-level tricks in a way that was rare on 360.

Guess what? DF today is not the same as it was in 2013. We have completely changed our approach to everything and my analysis of this game is absolutely inline with everything I've been doing for the last year or two. You don't get to decide what DF is. If you're going to talk shit, you better have some examples (of content I've produced) so we can at least understand what you're talking about. You cannot talk about ports of a game while ignoring the hardware in use. These videos are designed to provide opinions based on our findings while trying to highlight where a game succeeds and fails technically. This is the worst version of Wolfenstein 2 but it also happens to be impressive - which is to say, I do not believe anyone could do a much better job. The issues with this port are due to limitations of the hardware. Any improvements from this point are likely to be very minor. They've pushed this platform really hard and it's super fascinating. DF videos are not competitions and they are not buying advice. If you want to use them in that way, that's your prerogative, but that's not the intention behind them. If this were a competition, the PC would be crushing everything but that's just not interesting to me. I want to see great results achieved on limited, fixed hardware. I have no idea what it is that you're looking for other than to bash the Switch or any other platform just because. It sounds like you want us to come out and say "the Switch version sucks!!" which is just an ignorant thing to do when you understand what the development team has to work with. Again, you cannot separate the platform from the work. Doing so is foolish, ignorant and disrespectful.

A little bit but...Wolf 2 is a much more demanding game than Doom. Doom has a lot of slowdown on Switch. Pre-release builds of Wolf 2 were dreadful on Switch - like, the simplest levels were in the mid-20s. Things were shaping up to be a disaster in some ways but the final game? It's nearly a locked 30fps about 90% of the time. It's just a few specific scenes which struggle but it's otherwise very consistent and smoother than Doom overall despite being a more technically demanding game. It's a "miracle" in that same way that a three-point shot at the buzzer is - obviously it's hyperbolic wording but it's designed to highlight how much of a surprise the final package is when considering the shape it WAS in. Pre-release software is usually shakier, obviously, but this was worse than usual - they came a long way in a short time. I think that's pretty impressive.

Comments like that suggest that you simply have no appreciation or understanding for what the developers had to work with. I’m praising their work and they deserve. There is no hand waving happening. You want this to be judged on a different scale and that isn’t fair to the developers. It’s like Doom on the Super NES. It’s a technical achievement that is, in many ways, more impressive than the original DOS version. It’s also basically unplayable. It’s impressive given the hardware which is what is being discussed. This isn’t a competition.

Not true. The PC gaming section here in Germany (in large retail stores) is often larger than all console sections combined. Pretty much every major game and many indie games are released at retail. Not that it’s useful for Pc games since it’s usually just a Steam code in a box. :-( It does seem quite uncommon for retail PC games in many other countries, however, especially in the States.

I know some people want this but I just don't think it would work. The game is heavy on first-person animation a la Crysis, Dishonored 2 and Mirror's Edge. Those games wouldn't feel right in third person. The combat wouldn't work, I feel. It's just not a third person game and it would require an insane amount of work to get right that would be totally different from FP mode. It's like asking for a first person mode in an Uncharted game - it just goes against how the game is designed to be played. I really hope they do not compromise their vision by shoehorning in a third person mode.

One thing I've found interesting is that the 4K OLEDs upscale 720p and 1080p with a touch of softening on hard pixel edges that's primarily visible when viewing at close proximity. This has the added effect of slightly softening edges when using scanlines in a way that almost replicates the subtle fall-off you see with a real CRT. I never liked using scanlines on the Kuro as it produced a somewhat dirty image and never looked great but on this thing, scanlines look really elegant and clean. It's also a much brighter display so scanlines do not have the same dimming effect. Compared to my PVM, the normal scanlines look surprisingly close. Here's a still shot from the review I'm positing today. I filmed that off of my 20L4 PVM and was surprised at how close it gets. The colors on the off-screen side are slightly off in the filmed footage (not yet good enough with the camera to nail the colors when filming a CRT). The Super Nt shot is from the 720p mode with normal scanlines.

The OLED scales 720p much like 1080p and, with pixel art, it really looks very similar. 1080p is slightly sharper with scanlines disabled but I feel, if you're using scanlines, you'll want to use 720p. If you're not, go with 1080p instead.

Thread: Analogue Super NT - orders and shipping(Now you're playing with SUPER POWER)

Regarding Rendering Ranger R2... I have a repro of the game (obviously not a real cart - way too expensive) and it works inconsistently with the Super Nt. When firing it up initially, it always crashes after the title screen, but if you re-run the "run cart" option multiple times, eventually it will get into the game and play fine. Seems like some sort of DMA bug perhaps? It's very weird. It's also a strange one to comment on since I'm using a repro rather than a real cart. I'd assume the real cart has the same issue but I cannot say for sure. The thing is - Higan's default timing sucks for actually playing. Both Higan and the Super Nt have their own methods for playing games at the correct refresh rate but neither is optimal for playing games, I've found. I'll show them, of course. You can disable v-sync on Super Nt just as on Higan to get the correct speed. My primary goal here is to focus more on actual playability - getting the best experience on a standard flat panel display. The only way I've found to do that with Higan is D3D with exclusive fullscreen. You get occasional audio pops but completely fluid scrolling with no skips - which is the objective here. Who the heck would ever want to play a SNES game with screen tearing or skipped frames? So those are basically two issues and it's good that both solutions offer perfectly accurate speed options for matching the original refresh rate - and it's better than they each offer a way to get around it and enjoy games with smooth performance.

I've already got Air Strike Patrol in there and it's super interesting. The appearance of the game on a real SNES does vary from both the Super Nt and Higan, interestingly enough. It's COMPLETELY busted on the SNES Mini and most other emulators I've tried, though (and not just the shadows).

Sooo...I've been debating this point and I feel that I'm going to stick with the default emulator included with the Mini while making a note about options for improving compatbility (DA's tool doesn't fix, though). I can't possibly show every possible permutation so I've had to set some ground rules as far as what's covered here.

You're using the newer OSSC revision then with HDMI output, I guess. I have one revision prior to that with analog output only so I didn't realize this was an issue. In my case, my receiver allows you to select which audio source you want to pair with which video source so it's easy to use but I can see issues in some cases.

Everything. Animation isn't great, movement feels janky (even with vaulting), the worlds themselves feel as if they're pieced together from a collection of free assets, there are a lot of broken visual elements (the horizon tends to look awful and completely disconnected from the world when gliding into the map), vehicles look and move poorly, building interiors are just ugly (really ugly), the lighting is generally poor and the whole thing feels cheap. I've managed to have fun with the game with friends but every single match I'm thinking "man, this is one ugly game". There are ten year old games that look significantly better than PUBG. I'm not familiar with these guys but...their frame-rate graph is completely incorrect. Not only is it showing tearing where there is none but the readout makes no sense. If you flip through frame by frame you can see that, when it's reading in the mid-40s, the game is still delivering one unique frame followed by a dupe frame with perfect consistency so that readout is not correct. It's 30fps.

It really doesn't make sense to slam the Switch, though. You have to judge it within its own constraints. Did the developers do a good job for the hardware? It'll never match the other consoles. It's not a pass. I'm really not sure what you guys want. "The Switch version is inferior again. It's a waste of money. Why would anyone bother?" It's less powerful hardware, guys. Significantly less powerful. That's why it's so interesting - I love seeing developers squeeze what they can out of lower spec hardware. Compromises are always going to happen - but which compromises are made will vary. Some people said I was way too harsh on the Switch version in this video...others say the opposite. So I guess I was right on.

Yes. Jumping feels sluggish as well. The thing is, I noticed it felt a little heavy but didn't think much of it since it still played fine. ...then I fired it up on Xbox One X and it was night and day. That's the point when it hit me.

Thread: Mental Health ERA |OT| You are not Alone

Man, it's been a bad week for me. I've long struggled with health anxiety issues (I could probably list 10 random thing which triggered this in the past year alone) and it's hitting again. I've been down and burned out in general the last few weeks (barely wanting to do anything, losing interest in work, getting super angry or sad at the drop of a hat) and now I'm feeling "slightly off" - like I'm looking through a screen door. It's like being slightly dizzy but not really. It's once again sent me into a spiral of feeling horrible and thinking about death. Has anyone ever managed to overcome this obsession with health anxiety, death and the like? I mean, an example - I had a small sore on my nose, which turned out to be a clogged pore, but for a few days I was convinced it was some kind of horrible infection that would spread and kill me. Not logical at all. My pain threshold is super low as well which makes things ever harder. I've dealt with this kind of stuff off and on for 15 years and have yet to fully beat it. Now I'm flying out tomorrow for a show which feels like bad timing but maybe it'll actually help (as getting busy seems to improve things). Really sucks, I gotta say.

Thread: Time to buy a new Monitor - UHD or Ultra wide?

I've been using a 38" 3840x1600 monitor. It's an interesting compromise as I was looking for a larger size and it offers the pixel width of 4K while also supporting 75hz with OLMB. Surprisingly, this mode looks amazing for games. It produces an image similar to a CRT monitor with visible flicker - it's not noticeable or uncomfortable while gaming and it greatly eliminates blur. The issue I ran into is that they just don't make large monitors with super high refresh rates and resolutions - at least when I was shopping around. 34" is just a little too small for me.

There are points in the past where I’ve sold things in my collection and I’ve always come to regret it long term. Thread: How Many of You Enjoy What You Do for a Living?

I'm a computer programmer by trade - studied this in college and spent more than 10 years working in IT for various automotive companies doing all sorts of things. It was interesting but I didn't really love it. Now, after leaving the States in 2013, I work entirely for Digital Foundry and I love it! It's very satisfying work that is also way more demanding than I would have ever guessed. Most projects involve scripting, recording, editing in Premiere and AE, filming, playing + capturing, reading lots of white papers and documents etc. It's really quite rewarding to create video content entirely by yourself while trying to entertain and inform people. The only downside is the significant number of hours required by many projects - especially those that I care about the most. Lots of 12+ hour days and often weekends to keep up with the demands of the internet.

Thread: Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy PS4/Pro vs Xbox One/X vs Switch Resolution/Frame Rate Comparison

I've been working on this as well and it seems like a great port. As VG Tech is showing, though, the performance numbers are super boring for this game - which I suppose is good for the end user. The Switch version feels a little wobbly at times but it's not bad. It's really a shame there wasn't an attempt at 60fps at least on something like Xbox One X.
