Definitely. And given the latest increases in the Pokemon Go user base I could be completely missing the potential upside. However, my forecast is already pretty high given Switch projected installed base and franchise historicals... I don't know sometimes it feels like throwing at a dart board will deliver as good a prediction as anything. It should, but I'm not 100% certain on how this package will be categorized yet. Sometimes, but I find google trends more directionally helpful personally. RIP my mentions.

I think this version will work at what it's supposed to do in growing the installed base with kids/family. But right now, Switch owners lean older and more core. I think both do very well, but making the top 10 in 2018 isn't like a normal year.

I remain one of the most bullish analysts in the industry on Switch, Pokemon and Smash. Leaving them off the top 10 list in a year with games like we have this year isn't downplaying any of them. Especially since we don't have digital in the tracking for Nintendo, Pokemon having two games (which always impacts its rankings) and the Dec 7 release for Smash. All will be very successful for a very long time.

Don't see it happening this year, but would be happy to be wrong. FC5 is open world, multiplatform, has more content drops coming and Ubisoft are masters of timing promotional pricing. I still see GoW making the annual top 10. Guess we shall see. Bundle sales are excluded from the SW charts. People buy bundles for the hardware, not the game. The game in a bundle is more a GWP.

Performance by both SoD2 and GoW was very good, but overall software was down YoY because Injustice 2 launched a year ago to big numbers. The most impactful game of May was probably Fortnite, and that itself has far bigger and more reaching long term potential impact on the industry than either GoW or SoD2 but we don't talk about it because it's f2p and therefore not on the chart. Yes, more f2p is coming, and more streaming and subscription options. Consumers will ultimately determine which way everything goes, as they always do.

Hmmmm... okay let me see if I can try to clear some things up. - Retail physical sales of video games actually grew last year, and I have them forecast to grow in high single-digit % this year. So while there are significant challenges ahead for all of retail, "retail is dying for games which everyone knows about" isn't true, at least not yet. Maybe 5 years from now it's a different story, but the death of games physical media has been greatly exaggerated. It's just that digital growth has been so massive that share is shifting because the pie is getting much bigger. - There is no way of separating a sale for Xbox Play Anywhere content between a purchase on a PC or on an Xbox One. It's the same code, the same unique product identification number, it's the same product. I'm pretty sure that Microsoft has by platform usage stats they track, but in terms of the transnational purchase, there's no way to strip out platform of purchase in the transnational data. If another company wished and/or could do the same, build a shell on another platform which ran the exact same code and product, then those transactions would be treated similarly. - The idea that, in the future, companies would somehow limit the ways in which people could pay for content is, frankly, absurd. Finding more and easier ways for people to spend money is the way this goes. More options, more paths to engage, more opportunities to spend. - The video game market is not zero sum. - Sometimes the gaps between ranked titles can be very small. Sometimes a #1 selling title can sell over a hundred million, sometimes it doesn't break ten million. The relative ranking of a title tells you very little about the actual performance or relative scale between titles. Some misplaced assumptions in some of the arguments being made. Shrug.

Yep. Now the real fun part is to start thinking about Streaming and Game Pass. If Twitch weren't a thing, would Game Pass be as (hypothetically for the moment) good at selling full games? How many streamers streamed Sea of Thieves or SoD2 because of having it in Game Pass? How many sales did those streamers help generate? It's not easy to quantify. And Fortnite is certainly an outlier in terms of the impact it is having. Headsets/Headphones are not up 2x without Fortnite, nor is hardware as strong as it is currently. So I think the potential certainly exists for Fortnite to meaningfully move the Switch needle. We'll see with June data, but I'm expecting a significant bump because of Fortnite and the GameStop trade in program.

You caught why I added that line! Yep, even assuming a small digital share... Switch software sales are doing very, very well. I think so. I dunno. It's a weird thing. Won't really know until holiday. Don't know.... I'm curious on this as well. Having a 94 rated game >>> Not having a 94 rated game. The Pro GoW bundle did very well, and PS4 continues to thrive. Is GoW directly causing this? Maybe. But I mean it's really impossible to boil down purchase motivators to one thing like a light switch. Always a combination of factors. For members of the digital leader panel, yep. Only major pubs missing from digital are Bethesda and Nintendo. What do you put there instead? Spangenberg is already playing every day, which is gross. Until Tatis/Urias are ready not much we can do. Wouldn't mind trading Hand and some pieces for a young 3B though.

Heck, I'm not even sure I agree with all my predictions. Yep, video game stuff should be fun. We have Title and Item in the hierarchy. Items are individual product/platform combinations. For example, God of War PS4 Collector's Edition and PS4 God of War base edition are individual Items. Titles roll up the Items that are in the same product family... so all God of War versions roll up to the God of War Title. If it's the same game (outside of potential DLC/MTX) then the Items are rolled up together to a Title level. The Pokemon games are each considered an individual Title, and are therefore tracked separately. There's no perfect way to categorize everything in the games space, and of course it's getting harder to do so over time.

I'm very interested in this too. The data suggest that Fortnite has had a big impact to PS4 and Xbox One hardware in 2018. But not only that, it reads pretty clearly to me that Accessories like Headsets and Game Cards have also been pushed higher this year by Fortnite. Will this carry over to Switch? I think it should, but I won't get any read until mid August due to the database upgrades we're putting into place. And even then June data will be noisy because of the strong trade in promotions at GameStop. Cheers. But really, after sitting in front of some of the execs I've had to in order to advocate for a forecast or show what happened with a title's performance? Like I said, I do this for fun. Want a tough day? Try to explain to a group of 20 high level execs why a game is significantly under plan. Not a whole lot of fun.

Round 2: I do this for fun too. At 6AM. Shrug. It is. I've been looking for something, anything, to disagree with you on for over a year now. Today is not the day I'll find that thing. Yep, I'll do another prediction results post then. Well, I mean, I also create models and do lots of math. =/ I still think Labo is an idea with huge potential. But my assumptions in regards to the marketing and promotional push did not meet market realities, at least not yet. I'm wait and see at this point. Makes sense. And none of the margins this year have been particularly large, with the exception of God of War month. It's super tight with all 3 platforms doing well. Cross ownership rates are high too, which suggests to me that each box is becoming differentiated enough that they're far less directly competitive than in previous generations. It sure is. Well ahead of my early year predictions, with a fantastic slate ahead. PS4 is having an exceptional year, will continue to do so. It's more a hobby than a business. I'm an analyst, been doing forecasts and predictions for over a decade now. I just used to do them for my publisher employers, now I do it in the big wide world. If all I did were the monthly summaries and the media release around results the gig wouldn't be all that fun. Yep, made this list in accordance to current reporting rules. If those rules change (we add new publishers to the panel, for example) I'd update the list. I have projections baked for the missing digital data, but went with the straight reporting rules for this list.

Alright, let's do this. First off, thanks for everyone's comments and thoughts. I appreciate the feedback, especially those that challenge assumptions and force me to think through things differently. Thanks! Second, a prediction is not a forecast is not a prophecy. A forecast is a calculated result of a series of assumptions. And the forecast is only as good as the assumptions, which are almost always not reflected in reality. And a prediction is a specific subset of forecast that has even more assumptions, of even higher potential error. I know I'll get at least some of the predictions wrong, because my set of assumptions will end up not working out as I anticipate. Such is life. I'll start with these, and then I'll go back to find a few more that are interesting. It's real good. Life's too short to drink bad coffee. Grind your own beans. And while I use a drip on the daily, a french press is tough to beat. Nah, but if I did it would be one of those new paper straws. Plastic gotta go. Primarily I go with decay rate. Games generally sell fewer copies over time, with the exceptions of seasonality and big price discounting. However, when you look at a franchise or genre or even super genre, it's pretty easy to come up with averages of what that decay rate looks like. If a game decays at a slower rate than one would normally expect for that franchise or genre, that shows good legs. Potentially. But God of War is currently sitting at 94 meta and released in a great window. If that game were at 84 and launched mid-November, we wouldn't be seeing the performance we are. So God of War is, imo, an unfair bar to set for Marvel's Spider-Man. It's exceptionally difficult for a game to have the kind of development success the God of War team achieved. I obviously think Marvel's Spider-Man will have a fantastic 2018. I have it pegged as the best-selling superhero game in more than a decade, and the highest ranking superhero game since the old Spider-Man The Movie games published by Activision back in the day. I don't hide from them, and I'm not worried when a prediction doesn't work out. Just means I made some bad assumptions. Getting a prediction or forecast wrong isn't a problem. It's only a problem if one cannot recognize where they goofed up in making that prediction or forecast. But yes, my early year 2017 forecast did have Xbox One outselling PS4. My assumption was that, with the Xbox One X, a slate of first party titles would launch in support. That didn't happen, so my forecast was wrong. But again, I know why it was wrong. Funny part is I then brought my early year 2018 number for Xbox One significantly lower because I assumed very little 1st party support, and since then Xbox One has been on absolute fire because of State of Decay 2, Sea of Theives, Game Pass and the Backwards Compat efforts, and I'm wrong now the other way. But again, I know where my assumptions were off.

Yep. It's a meaningless game designed to drum up fan interest in the summer. Not having a player from every team kills that market's interest in the game. No one's going to not watch the game because Blake freaking Snell ain't there. But Toronto as a market would likely not tune in at all if no Jays were present. They should go ham with the fan service. Have an old timers all star game during the week with the softball game and the hr derby... go nuts with it.

The souvenir grinds is the worst thing that's gotten into MLB The Show... perhaps ever? It's all just so blatant and depressing. The fun of The Show is playing baseball, not spending hours flipping between programs trying to read how much an Indians hat is worth in trade and the shop trying to max purchase power. My heart sank when I saw the new career arcs when I should have been super excited, especially with guys like Johnny Bench in the mix.

Personally, I'd like to see progression gated by playing baseball things. Not just games and stats, but maybe some skills challenges in practice mode for these players? Home Run Derby participation, zone hitting challenges, pitch recognition challenges, or perhaps even situation based statistics (get X pinch hits in the 7th inning or later), that kind of thing? I mean, I guess you could just call those things time grinds. I get it. I get that the souvenirs encourage purchasing stubs with real money. Trust me, I get that. But I'd love to see more creative ways to separate me from my money. Buying stubs to do this souvenir grind just feels kinda bad. It's a bummer.

TBF, H2H can be miserable. I'm certainly not opposed to the idea of certain programs highlighting certain modes in the game. One of the things I love most about The Show is that the programs force me to use players I wouldn't normally use. That 2011 Matt Joyce is one of my most used players this year, something I never would have done without the program structure. I've never touched the practice mode. If there was a program that made me go to that and do stuff I'd probably learn to be a better player, heh.

There's something... I dunno just a bit wrong about The Show giving you the Impact Veteran version of players like Ruth, Doby and Torre to start with. I imagine for a lot of The Show players this will be their introduction to players like Doby. And to imagine that people will start with the end of career, mangled knees, bronze rated version of these players that were MVPs and some of the best players of their eras is a real bummer. Well on my way to a bunch. Basically unlocked all the players that require a couple souvenirs and exchanges. Now, just have to play the game, and somehow find a way for Chris Carter to have an RBI and a walk in the same game. Which may never happen. $100. Selling dupes of diamonds/golds to fund the other purchases. I'll put 300+ hours into this thing (almost hit 400 last year) so it's good value for me. Shrug.

Been reading this book where the author interviews old ballplayers. One laments how soft today’s players are, how much technology has hurt the game, complaining about how everyone swinging for the fences is awful and how kids dont even like baseball anymore. This particular interview is with Sam Crawford, who played for Detroit in the 1910’s in an interview done in like the 60s. Book’s called The Glory of Their Times. Good stuff.

Franchy Cordero is not a good outfielder. Cost Tyson Ross his no-hitter. Today, he was slow to react to the ball and then didn't even dive for it when he had the chance to make a play. At least they didn't go total Padres with it, but dammit the franchise has never had a no-hitter and TWO really good chances this year blown by the same bad outfielder. Still a fun player to watch, has big upside, but someone help that guy learn how to play the outfield!

They have perhaps the best player to ever play the game, all-stars everywhere, Ohtani, etc etc. They could be hurt by injuries and fall out of the race but complaining about a team being ‘mediocre’ with that roster and that payroll and that team’s willingness to spend is laughable. Let’s get real here. I mean, some of y’all sound like Jays fans a couple years ago complaining all the time when they had one of the best teams in baseball. Of course most of them don’t post anymore becaue the Jays are terrible but still... 16-10, 4th best record in the AL and people talking about mediocre just because they’re getting knocked around a bit for a game lololol

You don’t want your pitcher of catcher fielding a pop up in that area. Hosmer is a gold glove fielder and supposedly the captain of the team and that ball is his. The fact no one called for it and no one took charge is on all of them, but Hosmer is supposed to be the leader of the team and he should have at least communicated he couldn’t get there or see it. Just a disastrous play and there’s really enough blame to give to everyone, but Hosmer should have made that catch.

High visibility exclusives have greatest impact at launch, pricing has greatest impact at tail. But both are always meaningful, the extent of that meaning varying a bit month to month depending on what new titles are released and what price promotion occurs. Other factors like seasonality and cross-plat releases come into play too, as well as lots of other things. People always want to simplify into their being just ONE thing that matters, which is nonsense. Everything counts. Well, almost everything.
