Thread: Islands of Nyne Gameplay Trailer

50 was standard during the last closed alpha phase. Seems like the timings for the shrinking circles are a little out of whack, based on the one game I was able to get into. (They used to change a lot more frequently and thus led to more frantic match paces.)

Thread: Why is Gamergate support still so prevalent in gaming communities?

Because "culture war" is a real thing, and it is amplified by two equally powerful actors: paid disruption groups (ie Russian ops in 2016), and bored, disenfranchised youth. Look into Chanology's battles against Scientology to understand the etymology of how these sorts of online ops began, and then look at the story of Kathy Sierra being badgered relentlessly by online mobs all the way back in 2007: Some players in these efforts are entirely disingenuous, and even politically motivated. Others are bored kids who get indoctrinated in the same ways that insecure gang and cult leaders have bolstered their ranks for decades. The root of it all is a strange and sad humanity that is hard to make sense of, because that's usually left to the harassed and abused victims--who should NOT be responsible for undoing painful online assholery. Thus, I encourage you to TAKE A STAND when you see aggressive, dehumanizing idiocy and appeal to decency, especially if you have the bandwidth to do so. The teenager you save today may be the world-changer of tomorrow's online society.

Thread: The controversial ArenaNet firings of Guild Wars 2 writers (READ OP)

Jessica hopped on Twitter today to address the issue and offer what I think is a really important point: ArenaNet's actions, and tactics, were on their face more disrespectful than anything Jessica said to a member of the community. A selection of her posts: Full thread: ArenaNet could very well have redirected this conversation and clarify how a slag aimed at one uninvited Twitter comment, even if you want to call it unprofessional, was NOT equivalent to an attack on all fans and all outside criticism. (Which is the narrative that the mob began to immediately carry and make a game out of.) ArenaNet bought into that false narrative and reinforced it. Props to Jessica for continuing to be vocal about her perspective in the face of so much armchair criticism all over the Internet (not specifically aimed at commenters here, btw).

Thread: I gave my 12 year old nephew a SNES classic yesterday

I haxored some games onto my nephews' SNES Classic when I gave them one for Xmas, and I found that their fave games were a) anything with Star Wars, no matter how shitty; b) any games they could play reasonably well against a grown-up--thus, Tetris with their mom, Super Mario Kart and Super Bomberman with me; c) Super Mario over Sonic. Nobody told them which way to lean, with each series' 2D classics loaded on the same box in the same directories. That's just an unscientific observation.

Thread: LocoCycle is currently free on Xbox One

Every Twisted Pixel game since Splosion Man has been saddled with what I call Twisted Pixel Bosses. These sometimes appear as mini/final bosses, and sometimes they're chunks of an on-rails level, but either way, they force the player to repeat roughly 6-9 times an identical pattern/dodge/vulnerability combo. Each repeat usually takes a while, too, so these drag on and on. You get stuck doing the same task over and over because they didn't bother building any interesting mechanics. Lococycle is riddled with this. Gunstringer and Wilson's Heart, too. Damned shame. They're clearly a funny and talented team in terms of coaxing colorful VFX performance out of hardware (360, every Oculus platform), but Lococycle was the nail in their coffin for me. They have a new VR game at Oculus in the works and it's... well... I dunno. Could turn out great, and it's certainly ambitious. But I'm not ready to pass judgement yet.

exactly. after proving that out, I then sideloaded benchmark apps using ADB, then navigated them with a combination of a connected mouse and a LOT of squinting (the benchmarks were all meant for 2D screens, and Oculus Go renders those kinds of images very weirdly). this required enabling "developer mode" with the smartphone Oculus app. yes. a small, tolerable light will bleed in through that opening if you don't bolt this thing super-tightly to your face. so, either accept light bleed or make the raccoon-face effect more intense.

just beware, it's wonky about bluetooth/peripheral support at the moment. as in, you can't connect outside bluetooth devices beyond the Go controller for now. I had to use a micro-USB hub just to get a wired mouse working in certain 2D apps, and that hub didn't let me properly connect my wired XB1 pad, either.

update: by using the Oculus smartphone app, you can tell an updated Xbox One controller (the ones that added Bluetooth) to pair with a Go headset. I just tested this to play Pinball FX 2, and works fine. (I hate using the Oculus smartphone app, however, as it requires having GPS turned on. sickening move on Oculus's part. I deleted the Oculus app as soon as I got my headset working during the testing phase, since it otherwise doesn't require a connected phone's app to turn on, update, etc.)

No fan. (I'm not sure I've ever tested a commercial VR headset with an internal fan.) As a light headset with a nice nose opening and ear openings (no headphones, remember, it's all "skull bouncing" sound), Go's natural heat dissipation is actually quite good. I had friends put this on and report heat and foggy lenses at first, only to find those issues receded quicker than they expected.

(It's also near some great breakfast/lunch joints and the Fantagraphics comic book store, which has some kid-friendly stuff but also some weird/risque stuff.)

Thread: Totaku |OT| Gaming Figures With No Field Communication

To anybody eyeing the eventual Sonic Totaku, I would like to point out that KidRobot's Sonic blind-box collection includes an almost identical Sonic figurine. It's likely smaller than the Totaku version, but I actually prefer my tiny Sonic over how this newer one looks. (And I like the ring-design stand.) Issue, of course, is that you have to get it blind (or pay ~$15 on eBay), but this one is the most common of the Sonic blind set, at least.

uh... I didn't realize the PlayStation angle wouldn't even last more than a freaking day. Sea Of Thieves Totaku, at your service: edit: oh, and there's the real one in the post right above this. sold out online, but clearly available at physical shops.

Thread: Pocket Rumble Switch Edition | Pixel-Perfect Pugilism (OT)

I've never heard a single thing from them about either the Switch or PC version, in spite of first sending press requests back in March of last year. In fact, I had no idea it'd gone to Steam Early Access until someone mentioned it on Era. Not sure what's going on over at Cardboard Robot.

Thread: Battlefield V Closed Alpha Thread (PC Only)

Any ini editing tips from the apparent EA/DICE folks in here? I had to catch a plane away from my home rig and am trying to make a laptop with a 1060 get this anywhere near 60fps, and with no options for gfx, I am hurting. I feel like disabling effects and shadows would go a long way....

Thread: G-sync thread

Yes to Arulan's suggestion. Blurbusters recommends enabling V-Sync in Nvidia panel, then disabling it in games, but some folks disagree w/ that guidance.

Thread: Once-hyped games that are now completely forgotten

Let's take this all the way back to 1993: Eternal Champions was a huge one hype-wise, coming right after the six-button Genesis/Mega Drive pad had shipped for SFII:SCE. And... it was such a wet fart. Clearly, it had an art budget, but the fighting was laggy and sloppy, with shitty button detection; the art design was way too cluttered to see any of the action; every character had a stupid look and stupider concept; and the sound and music were the exact abomination that gave MD/Gen music a bad rap for years.

Thread: Lumines Remastered |OT| SHININ' SHININ' SHININ' SHININ' SHININ' SHININ' SHININ' SHININ' SHININ'

My thoughts: start placing blocks and going for obvious 2x2 squares. Then eventually, you'll get one single color sticking out. Get into the habit of placing three-and-one blocks onto those. Get used to not only doing that but recognizing when you have an opportunity to do so. Then find a way to get a few of those one-block peaks scattered around your left and your right. Then leave some "flat" space to put any two-line blocks. The good stuff is when you get into the right headspace to manage 3-and-1 pieces, two-line blocks, and criss-cross pieces whenever they appear. Slap each on their best stack, then do so more quickly each time to chain more multi-block clears. Then turn the music up.
